Book African Traditional And Oral Literature As Pedagogical Tools In Content Area Classrooms

Download or read book African Traditional And Oral Literature As Pedagogical Tools In Content Area Classrooms written by Lewis Asimeng-Boahene and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, many American educators and educational stakeholders have drawn their ideas for educational reforms from ideas generated in Europe and Asia for the changing demographics of America’s diverse classrooms. This book is therefore motivated by a bold attempt at advocating for the revision of existing pedagogic fora and the creation and addition of new fora that would provide for the inclusion of thoughts, perspectives and practices of African traditional oral literature in the pedagogical tools of content area classrooms especially in North America. The articles that are presented in this book provide theoretical frameworks for using African traditional oral literature and its various tenets as teaching tools. They bring together new voices of how African literature could be used as helpful tool in classrooms. Rationale for agitating for its use as ideal for pedagogic tool is the recurrent theme throughout the various articles presented. The book explores how educators, literacy educators, learners, activists, policy makers, and curriculum developers can utilize the powerful, yet untapped gem of African oral literature as pedagogical tools in content area classrooms to help expand educators repertoire of understanding beyond the ‘conventional wisdom’ of their pedagogic creed. It is a comprehensive work of experienced and diverse scholars, academicians, and educators who have expertise in multicultural education, traditional oral literature, urban education, children’s literature and culturally responsive pedagogy that have become the focus of U.S. discourses in public education and teacher preparation. This anthology serves as part of the quest for multiple views about our ‘global village’, emphasizing the importance of linking the idea of diverse knowledge with realities of global trends and development. Consequently, the goal and the basic thrust of this anthology is to negotiate for space for non-mainstream epistemology to share the pedagogical floor with the mainstream template, to foster alternative vision of reality for other knowledge production in the academic domain. The uniqueness of this collection is the idea of bringing the content and the pedagogy of most of the genres of African oral arts under one umbrella and thereby offering a practical acquaintance and appreciation with different African cultures. It therefore introduces the world of African mind and thoughts to the readers. In summary, this anthology presents an academic area which is now gaining its long overdue recognition in the academia.

"Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today." Robert McAfee Brown "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." Hannah Arendt Jesus is a great example of a masterful storyteller. Although all his stories were not based on an actual event, they were not fiction. There was nothing but truth in them. What skill! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12 Stages of Healing is an extraordinary new approach to healing the mind and body. Dr. Epstein, founder and creator of Network Spinal, offers fascinating insights into the complex relationship between mind, emotions, and body, and shows us how to promote greater health in our bodies and harmony in our relationships. Have you, or someone you love, experienced . . . · A recurring sickness, healing crisis, or life-threatening illness? · A feeling of emptiness and longing for no apparent reason? · A major trauma, emotional hardship, or life-changing event? · A feeling of being stuck in a pattern of self-destructive behavior? After observing thousands of people in both private practice and public seminars, Dr. Epstein discovered 12 basic rhythms, or stages of consciousness, shared by all humanity. Each stage of healing has a distinct “rite of passage” that helps us to reunite with aspects of ourselves that are traumatized, alienated, forgotten, abused, shamed, or unforgiven. Each stage also has a characteristic pattern of breath, movement, and touch that can help us to reconnect with the natural, internal rhythms of our body, and experience a greater sense of joy and well-being. “Donald Epstein is an extraordinary healer. In my 25 years of traveling the globe, I’ve never seen anyone who is able to produce the impact he does in such a short period of time. He opens our hearts to new possibilities for individuals and humanity.” — Tony Robbins, Peak Performance Coach and best-selling author of Unlimited Power

  • Author : Steven Collins
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2020-07-07
  • ISBN : 0231552041
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book Wisdom as a Way of Life written by Steven Collins and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging and powerful book argues that Theravāda Buddhism provides ways of thinking about the self that can reinvigorate the humanities and offer broader insights into how to learn and how to act. Steven Collins argues that Buddhist philosophy should be approached in the spirit of its historical teachers and visionaries, who saw themselves not as preservers of an archaic body of rules but as part of a timeless effort to understand what it means to lead a worthy life. He contends that Buddhism should be studied philosophically, literarily, and ethically using its own vocabulary and rhetorical tools. Approached in this manner, Buddhist notions of the self help us rethink contemporary ideas of self-care and the promotion of human flourishing. Collins details the insights of Buddhist texts and practices that promote the ideal of active and engaged learning, offering an expansive and lyrical reflection on Theravāda approaches to meditation, asceticism, and physical training. He explores views of monastic life and contemplative practices as complementing and reinforcing textual learning, and argues that the Buddhist tenet that the study of philosophy and ethics involves both rigorous reading and an ascetic lifestyle has striking resonance with modern and postmodern ideas. A bold reappraisal of the history of Buddhist literature and practice, Wisdom as a Way of Life offers students and scholars across the disciplines a nuanced understanding of the significance of Buddhist ways of knowing for the world today.
