Book Winthrop Rockefeller a Life of Change c

Download or read book Winthrop Rockefeller a Life of Change c written by and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winthrop Rockefeller was a visionary whose enduring legacy - as this book persuasively argues - was the creation of a new social, political, and economic climate in Arkansas, one that allowed its citizens to become active participants in their communities and to overcome the inferiority complex deeply ingrained in the state's culture. Passionately committed to strengthening race relations and to improving access to education and the arts, Rockefeller was never one simply to write a check. Rather, he helped his fellow citizens turn their ideas into plans and then provided them with the resources to put their plans into action.

Book The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation

Download or read book The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation written by Raymond B. Fosdick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1952, Fosdick's book has been the single most reliable treatment of one of the most important philanthropies in the United States and indeed the world. Fosdick served as president of the foundation for twelve years, from 1936 to 1948, when it was the largest grant-making endow-ment in the world. As Steven Wheatley notes in his valuable new introduction, in part The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation was intended as an instrument of institutional self-defense. When it was written, the foundation community was under mounting political attack from the right, and the book was meant to help balance the Scales by cataloging the foundation's good works. As a deliberate self-portrait, the book conceals as much as it reveals, while in the process it reveals a good deal about the author. Fosdick sees politics, like bureaucracy, as perhaps an avoidable problem and not an inevitable consequence of foundation activity. He sees foundations as engaging in the application of scientific, tech-nical, and organizational solutions to public problems through a ""venture cap-ital"" approach to discovering how to resolve them. Fosdick's ""higher ground"" approach became established philanthropic practice far beyond the Rockefeller Foundation. Consequently, this volume is significant as an institutional history as well as a charter for American foundations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1974, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation's mission has been to extend the late Governor Rockefeller's vision of a thriving and prosperous Arkansas that benefits all Arkansans. Poverty has no place in Arkansas. At least that's the credo the late Governor Winthrop Rockefeller embraced as he grew to love his adopted state.Forty years later, WRF's mission continues to be to improve the lives of Arkansans in three inter-related areas: education, economic development, and economic, racial, and social justice. The Foundation decided to celebrate its 40th anniversary, not by celebrating our own accomplishments but by turning the attention outward, on the strong leaders at nonprofit organizations, in the public sector, and at educational institutions, without whom our goals would be unachievable. With strong leaders, our state can face the challenge issued by Governor Rockefeller himself during his 1967 inaugural address, "that Arkansas may enter into a new era of excellence, to launch a far reaching quest for quality in which we shall no longer be content merely to exalt in our potential or measure our progress in comparison with our past."
