Book The Trickster A Study In American Indian Mythology

Download or read book The Trickster A Study In American Indian Mythology written by Paul Radin and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth of the Trickster—ambiguous creator and destroyer, cheater and cheated, subhuman and superhuman—is one of the earliest and most universal expressions of mankind. Nowhere does it survive in more starkly archaic form than in the voraciously uninhibited episodes of the Winnebago Trickster Cycle, recorded here in full. Anthropological and psychological analyses by Radin, Kerényi, and Jung reveal the Trickster as filling a twofold role: on the one hand he is “an archetypal psychic structure” that harks back to “an absolutely undifferentiated human consciousness, corresponding to a psyche that has hardly left the animal level” (Jung); on the other hand, his myth is a present-day outlet for the most unashamed and liberating satire of the onerous obligations of social order, religion, and ritual.

Book excerpt: Artist, teacher, and Red Progressive, Angel De Cora (1869-1919) painted Fire Light to capture warm memories of her Nebraska Winnebago childhood. In this biography, Linda M. Waggoner draws on that glowing image to illuminate De Cora's life and artistry, which until now have been largely overlooked by scholars. One of the first American Indian artists to be accepted within the mainstream art world, De Cora left her childhood home on the Winnebago reservation to find success in the urban Northeast at the turn of the twentieth century. Despite scant documentary sources that elucidate De Cora's private life, Waggoner has rendered a complete picture of the woman known in her time as the first "real Indian artist." She depicts De Cora as a multifaceted individual who as a young girl took pride in her traditions, forged a bond with the land that would sustain her over great distances, and learned the role of cultural broker from her mother's Métis family. After studying with famed illustrator Howard Pyle at his first Brandywine summer school, De Cora eventually succeeded in establishing the first "Native Indian" art department at Carlisle Indian School. A founding member of the Society of American Indians, she made a significant impact on the American Arts and Crafts movement by promoting indigenous arts throughout her career. Waggoner brings her broad knowledge of Winnebago culture and history to this gracefully written book, which features more than forty illustrations. Fire Light shows us both a consummate artist and a fully realized woman, who learned how to traverse the borders of Red identity in a white man's world.

Download or read book Winnebago Nation written by James B. Twitchell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Winnebago Nation, popular critic James B. Twitchell takes a light-hearted look at the culture and industry behind the yearning to spend the night in one's car. For the young the roadtrip is a coming-of-age ceremony; for those later in life it is the realization of a lifelong desire to be spontaneous, nomadic, and free. Informed by his own experiences on the road, Twitchell recounts the RV's origins and evolution over the twentieth century; its rise, fall, and rebirth as a cultural icon; its growing mechanical complexity as it evolved from an estate wagon to a converted bus to a mobile home; and its role in bolstering and challenging conceptions of American identity. Mechanical yet dreamy, independent yet needful, solitary yet clubby, adventurous yet homebound, life in a mobile home is a distillation of the American character and an important embodiment of American exceptionalism, (Richie Rich and Hobo Hank spend time in essentially the same rig at the same campground, albeit for different reasons and in different levels of comfort.) The frontier may be tapped out but we still yearn for the exploratory life. Twitchell concludes with his thoughts on the future of RV communities and the possibility of mobile cities becoming a real part of the American landscape.

Book excerpt: This memoir traces the author's lifetime which started on the Winnebago Tribe Indian Reservation in northeastern Nebraska. It tells the family history of three of four of his families and presents detailed information about his parents, sibling and grandparents' lives. The author's story covers over eighty years of learning, growing, working and family participation. This life story exemplifies the numerous, freedom driven possibilities for anyone who lives in the United States of America to achieve and prosper. If it is true that "everyone has a story" then their story must be of interest to someone. This story isn't about amazing lifetime events and experience, but instead it's about the real-life experiences of an ordinary citizen that were uniquely different from those of today's modern society. He tells what is was like to live "poor" without modern amenities. That background didn't diminish his progress through education, work, family development and retirement. Perhaps his simple early years inspired him to strive for a better future.Andrew W. (Bill) Johnson is retired and lives in Wilsonville, Oregon
