Book The Napa Valley Wine Industry

Download or read book The Napa Valley Wine Industry written by Ian Malcolm Taplin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Napa became a pre-eminent site for the production of great and sometimes iconic wines in a short space of time. Unlike its Old World counterparts whose development took place over centuries, Napa’s inception didn’t start until the beginning of the 19th century, and even then struggled to identify appropriate grape varietals and find a market for such wine, only to be frustrated when Prohibition occurred in the early 20th century and practically shut down the industry. It was in the 1960s that winegrowing would re-emerge on a scale and quality that began to be noticed by informed critics and neophyte consumers. In the following decades, critical information sharing networks of owners and winemakers emerged, facilitating a collective organization learning that fostered a commitment to quality and consistency that would cement Napa’s reputation. During these decades, technical skills were embraced, institutional support harnessed, and demand for premium wine in America grew. This book is a story about this evolving wine market, about how key individuals were able to shape its organization and build a brand that would increasingly be identified as amongst the best in the world. It starts with an early discussion of what constitutes quality and how wine has been evaluated over the centuries, and ends by exploring Napa’s apotheosis and the current critical issues facing the industry in that area.

Book excerpt: Dancing Somm is a unique composition of intellectual property on how to create wine and food pairings that will knock it out of the park every time, including recipes and the explanation as to why and how they work in harmony. It is also the story of a forty year journey of passion and history of the incredible California wine pioneers who I have had the great fortune of working with and for, including Robert Mondavi, Peter Mondavi, Francis Ford Coppola, Christian Moueix, Eileen Crane, Jack Davies, Charlie and Chuck Wagner, John and Doug Shafer, Donald Hess, Merry Edwards, Tony and John Terlato, Gil Nickel, Robert Sinskey, Ray Signorello, Sandra McKeiver, Joe Heitz, Ramona Nicholson, Mike Benziger, Jeff Kunde, Bruce Cohn, Tom Mazzocco, Marimar Torres, Sam Sebastiani, Jess Jackson, Bill and Will Phelps. Over my years in the wine industry, I have taken to heart the wisdom and knowledge that these dynamic wine visionaries have imparted to me as mentors. Within these pages are behind the scenes previously untold stories, inspirations, humorous anecdotes and proprietary intellectual property that I have developed since becoming a Wine Educator and Sommelier since 1982. In turn, I have been delighted to play to thousands of audiences, with my passionate, driving quest to engage, entertain and enlighten, by sharing these insights and observations with a little twisted, smart-ass sense of humor. This has been my life's mission. In so doing, I have come to meet people from all walks of life-Rock Stars, comedians, Movie Stars, celebrity chefs, politicians and major professional sports figures. All because of wine. Wine brings us together to share inspired conversations, learn of new gastronomic delights, creates new friendships and strengthen human bonds like no other libation. After all, it is a beverage of pleasure! This is a book about wine and food pairings, drilling down on the "how tos" and "whys" with compelling recipes. Dancing Somm is also about the Golden Years of the California Wine Industry, famous people, anecdotes, and a very lucky guy, who has had the great fortune to be the Napa and Sonoma Wine Sherpa, guiding wine enthusiasts for 4 decades through new wine ventures, livin' le reve, living the dream as the Dancing Sommelier.

Book excerpt: "Wine is not to fear or revere, but to enjoy," says Leslie Sbrocco, wine expert. And that's exactly what she shows you how to do in Wine for Women, the first wine book written exclusively for women -- the majority of wine consumers. In Wine for Women, Leslie Sbrocco scraps the stuffy wine-speak and deals with what women really want to know about wine. The book includes shopping guides with hundreds of recommended wines, quick ideas for wine-friendly meals, and creative tips for sharing wine with family and friends. Organized into easy-to-manage sections, Wine for Women appeals to all levels of wine lovers. From Sauvignon Blanc to Chenin Blanc, Merlot to Malbec, and pink wines to dessert wines, Leslie Sbrocco makes her enormous knowledge of wine entertaining enough for the serious wine lover and accessible enough so any novice can feel like an expert. Each chapter focuses on a different variety of wine, and covers what Leslie calls the big three -- how to buy, pair, and share wine. You'll learn how to make smart buying decisions in stores and restaurants. Leslie also gives you practical advice for pairing wine and food and offers insights on entertaining with wine, whether you're having an informal picnic or planning the most formal of weddings. Confused between Chardonnay and Champagne? Think little black dress versus sequins. And Pinot Gris? Think your wine wardrobe's basic jeans. With her relaxed, friendly approach, Leslie makes it easy to understand the differences between wines and encourages women to explore and enjoy wine in their everyday lives. Keep Wine for Women in your kitchen. Bring it into your living room. Refer to it before you hit the wine shop, or when you just want an excuse to read, relax, and have a sip of something that's really you.
