Book The Windows of Saint Joseph

Download or read book The Windows of Saint Joseph written by Claudia Mazzucco and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a house without doors but sometimes a window is opened. For me that window was religion. Too early in my life I was blessed to perceive religion as it really is, and though in the very depth of my self I knew that "child-abuse" didn't apply in this case, the images that Islam and the Inquisition evoke in me were almost too horrible to bear. In a word, I was terrified of religion. How little we know what a religious experience really is - even our own. Certainly, after two years of meetings and daily masses, there was no sense of reality that my mind could provide for the content of Catholic doctrines, thereby invalidating them. I had never really noticed what the rules of Catholicism were and what typical Catholics experienced. However far I fall short of their understanding, I think my real trouble was I didn't have a theory of mind; thus, I concluded that everybody, including the priest who had to celebrate mass, experienced what I did. The theory of the mind runs very deep. It underscores the big words: the kinds of words that make consciousness possible: self, community, freedom itself. I have indeed become conscious of my freedom. How far down would I need to dig to discover the Risen Christ? ... Claudia Mazzucco has published a number of articles on the history of golf in magazines, periodical publications, and online magazines. She has also researched various subjects, including the historical background for Roberto De Vicenzo's Biography, published in Buenos Aires in 2005, and The Guide of Golf Courses in Argentina, Santillana 2003. She has edited more than twenty books on data and statistics about golf and taught history of this game in the PGA of Argentina for several years before deciding to devote full time to writing.

Book Stained Glass in Catholic Philadelphia

Download or read book Stained Glass in Catholic Philadelphia written by Jean M. Farnsworth and published by St. Joseph's University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stained Glass in Catholic Philadelphia tells the remarkable story of the thousands of stained-glass windows - made in America, England, France, and Germany - in the more than 400 churches, chapels, and institutions of the five-county Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Since 1997 more than 450 sites have been visited to document the archdiocese's windows by photographing them. This process resulted in the creation of a photo archive of over 50,000 images. Using this archive as a foundation, a team of scholars - from a variety of institutions and with specialties in medieval studies, architectural and social history, Christian iconography, decorative and liturgical arts, the craft, creative reuse, and historic preservation of stained glass - was assembled to study these windows. The result is this profusely illustrated book of original research that makes accessible a significant and highly visible, but neglected, aspect of our ecclesial, national, and regional cultural heritage."--BOOK JACKET. Book excerpt: When Archbishop Henry O’Leary became the second archbishop of Edmonton in 1920, he had a dream to build a western Canada Catholic college that would educate students in the Christian intellectual tradition. This is the story of how a small Roman Catholic institution confronted daunting challenges to become a Christian beacon of enlightenment at the very heart of the secular University of Alberta. Scholarship and community life in residence was always supplemented with teaching from the Christian Ministry Team, to form Christian citizens who would go out into the world to serve the larger community following graduation. In 1963, the Congregation of St. Basil took over the administration of the College from the Christian Brothers de la Salle who had administered the College from its founding in 1926. Since its establishment almost ninety years ago, the College has continued to provide young men and women with post-secondary courses grounded in Roman Catholic thought while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the University of Alberta. Initially, a residence was built for men, but O’Leary’s dream of also constructing a women’s residence never died and was finally realized in 2015. Faced with slender means, misunderstandings, student mischief and personality clashes, the mission of St. Joseph’s College has guided faculty, administrators, staff and Board members throughout its history and melded them into a close-knit community whose example is the envy of other units at the University of Alberta.
