Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jessica Stirling continues the epic of love, greed and betrayal that began in The Island Wife in her magnificent novel, The Wind from the Hills. For Innis and Biddy, daughters of the embittered Vassie Campbell, life has changed greatly from the days when they were poor crofters. Innis, the mother of three young children, has found that marriage to handsome Michael Tarrant is utterly different from the idyll she expected. And Biddy has become only too accustomed to being a wealthy widow who keeps herself aloof from both the life she once knew and her dead husband's family. But though the sisters' lives seem set, they are destined to change once more. For Innis, a temptation to a better life may have to come too late--and for Biddy, courted by an ardent new suitor, happiness may have come at last. Set against the background of an island off the coast of Scotland that is being forced half-willingly into a new era, the story of the two very different sisters and their very different longings is one of the most memorable that Jessica Stirling has created.

Book excerpt: Sethu's work spans shadows in which legend, metaphor and mysticism share equal space. A dream-like condensation of space and time and the constant employment of non-realistic narrative strategies mark the style of this doyen of the Malayalam literary world. In this English translation, Prema Jayakumar spools out a fabric that changes one language to another lyrically and seamlessly

Download or read book Wind on the Haunted Hill written by Ruskin Bond and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whoo-whooo-whoooo cried the wind as it swept down from the Himalayan snows The menacing wind rattled windows, choked chimneys and blew away clothes as it loomed over the little village next to Haunted Hill, where Usha, Suresh and Binya lived. It was even more ominous the day Usha was on her way back from the bazaar. A deep rumble echoed and a sudden flash of lightning lit up the hill as heavy pellets of rain came down in quick succession. Usha was forced to take shelter in the ruins of Haunted Hill that stood before her, grim and forbidding. As the tin sheet above groaned and clattered and streaks of lightning lit up the walls, Usha saw two small figures crouching in the disused fireplace. Then everything was dark again . . . A gritty, hair-raising story about friendship, courage and survival from India's favourite teller of tales, this stunning edition is an absolute must-have to introduce young readers to the magic of Ruskin Bond's craft.

Download or read book Power from Wind written by Richard Leslie Hills and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind is a fickle source of power. Windspeeds are frequently too low to be of any practical use, so that windpower has generally remained a marginal resource. Since the inception of windpower around 1000 AD, technology has been deployed to obtain the most economical power from wind. The author traces its technical evolution, concentrating on the growth in understanding of wind and charting crucial developments in windmill design. The history of the windmill is focused on North Western Europe, drawing on the origins of the first horizontal windmills in Persia, Tibet and China. Industrial applications such as in textiles, papermaking and mining are examined. Gradually, windmills were improved but were finally eclipsed by steam engines in the nineteenth century due to increased levels of industrialisation. The book concludes with a look at the recent re-emergence of windpower as a viable source of power in the wake of the energy crisis.

This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **ON SALE FOR A LIMITED TIME!** Meg had thought that taking a commuter flight from Pasco, Washington to Boise, Idaho would be a simple matter. But nothing is simple for Meg when it comes to travel, and especially not when she finds herself in the Middle Ages again instead of in a plane crash on a mountain side in Oregon. And when the pilot takes off without her in a quest to return to the twenty-first century, Meg will need every last bit of maturity and knowledge she gained in the sixteen years she spent in the modern world--to survive even a day in this one. Winds of Time is a short novel in the After Cilmeri series: A note from the author: This story was started many years ago, as part of Footsteps in Time. When it came down to it, however, the story didn't fit with what was happening with David and Anna, and had to be put aside. Happily, I am now able to share the story of Meg's return to the Middle Ages. Thus, Winds of Time takes place between Part 1 and Part 2 of Footsteps in Time. I think you will enjoy Winds of Time more if you read Footsteps in Time first. Diolch yn fawr (thank you)! -Sarah Complete series reading order: Daughter of Time, Footsteps in Time, Winds of Time, Prince of Time, Crossroads in Time, Children of Time, Exiles in Time, Castaways in Time, Ashes of Time, Warden of Time, Guardians of Time, Masters of Time, Outpost in Time, Shades of Time, Champions of Time, Refuge in Time, Outcasts in Time, Hidden in Time, Legacy of Time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young girl in Depression-era Arkansas discovers her Native American heritage when a series of strange and troubling spiritual events plague an archaeological excavation on sacred lands The mounds have stood for centuries, holy ground for the Quapaw Indians of rural Arkansas. Pamela and her mother, left destitute by the Great Depression and forced to move in with Pamela’s well-to-do grandfather, are newcomers to the small town of Flat Hills. Ostracized by her high school classmates because of her Quapaw heritage—a culture she knows nothing about—the quiet, sad teenager silently wishes they had never come to this place. But while wandering alone through the countryside, she stumbles across the sacred hills and discovers an ancient artifact that fires up her grandfather’s archaeological fervor. Soon a crew moves in to excavate, ignoring the objections of the local Native population, and Pamela begins to experience nightmares and terrible visions as an ancient evil reaches out from beneath the disturbed hallowed ground. When a string of inexplicable accidents befall the workers at the digging site, and thousands of crows gather ominously at its edges, a young girl who has always been kept sheltered from her family’s past will have to make the most difficult decision of her life and embrace the strange and powerful destiny that she never dreamed could be hers. A tale of suspense, the supernatural, and coming-of-age, Victoria Strauss’s Guardian of the Hills was selected by the New York Public Library as a Book for the Teen Age and was a South Carolina Association of School Librarians Junior Book Award nominee. An ingenious blend of historical fiction and dark fantasy, this is a page-turning tale that thrills and chills in equal measure.

But when young Falx runs away, and finds a lost barbarian girl, things begin to happen. The children are brought back by a one-eyed merchant who returns them to an Iscium quivering with the possibility of a barbarian invasion. The mysterious merchant has a plan--involving two talking ravens and The Hallelujah Chorus--and life is never quite the same again, for either the Romans or their invaders. A zany mix of history, humor, and the miraculous--in the satisfying tradition of Don Camillo. Ages 14 and up.

Book excerpt: “A graceful, intelligent, and very funny chronicle of a large, extended family beneath one capacious roof.” –The New York Times Book Review While always well-stocked with clean sheets, Lily Hill is not expecting visitors. At least not in the numbers that descend upon her genteely dilapidated New England ancestral home in the summer of ’89. Brother Harvey arrives first, thrice-widowed and eager for company; then perennially self-dramatizing niece Ginger and her teenaged daughter Betsy; then Alden, just laid-off from Wall Street, with his wife Becky, and their rowdy brood of four . . . As summer fades into fall, it becomes clear that no one intends to leave. But just as Lily’s industrious hospitality gives way to a somewhat strained domestic routine, the Hill clan must face new challenges together. Brimming with wit and a compendium of Yankee curiosities, The Hills at Home is an irresistible modern take on an old-fashioned comedy of manners.
