This book was released on 2022-05-22 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A]n autobiography that, happily, is an engrossing, full-bodied reflection of the man, a neatly balanced combination of technical insights and always pertinent, often irreverent anecdotes... an upbeat tale of a man who had a great love of life and a well-merited sense of achievement, told with genuine gusto and fascinating detail.” — Richard Witkin, The New York Times “It is the triumph of this book that it manages to combine a chatty, anecdotal, and highly readable tale of a distinguished scientist’s everyday life with a substantial number of penetrating insights into the creative process.” — I. B. Holley, Jr., Science “The present biography is eminently readable, sometimes puckish, and von Karman himself is rather inspiring in his faith in science.” — Kirkus “Every paragraph grips the reader’s attention... a book almost impossible to put down until it is read.” — Aerospace Historian “This account of von Kármán’s life and his contributions to the science of aerodynamics is most fascinating reading.” — The Science Teacher “Every page of this superb classic is infused with von Karman’s humanity. As his narrative makes clear, he was not simply a clever technician but a man of character whose vision advanced the aerospace sciences and fostered international cooperation.” — Aviation History

Book Rocket Man

Download or read book Rocket Man written by David A. Clary and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2003-08-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More famous in his day than Einstein or Edison, the troubled, solitary genius Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) was the American father of rocketry and space flight, launching the world's first liquid-fuel rockets and the first powered vehicles to break the sound barrier. Supported by Charles Lindbergh and Harry Guggenheim, through fiery, often explosive, experiments at Roswell, New Mexico, he invented the methods that carried men to the moon. Today, no rocket or jet plane can fly without using his inventions. Yet he is the "forgotten man" of the space age. His own government ignored his rocketry until the Germans demonstrated its principles in the V-2 missiles of World War II. The American government usurped his 214 patents, while suppressing his contributions in the name of national security, until it was forced to pay one million dollars for patent infringement. Goddard became famous again, monuments and medals raining upon his memory. But his renewed fame soon faded, and Goddard's pivotal role in launching the Space Age has been largely forgotten.

Book UNIVERSAL MAN

Download or read book UNIVERSAL MAN written by GORN MICHAEL H and published by Smithsonian. This book was released on 1992-07-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universal Man recounts the full range of Theodore von Karman's scientific and social accomplishments. Regarded as one of the fathers of supersonic flight, von Karman pioneered the use of applied mathematics in aeronautics and astronautics and, in the process, discovered some of the fundanmental laws of both disciplines. Von Karman used his theoretical knowledge to design aircraft, dirigibles, rockets, and missiles. He also demonstrated the first solid-propellant rocket engine. As significant as these accomplishments are (President John Kennedy presented him with the first National Medal of Science in 1963), they form but a portion of this great man's legacy. Born in Hungary, von Karman (1881-1963) emigrated to the United States in 1930 and lived the remainder of his life in Pasadena, California. He was a gifted teacher, passing on to three generations of students his own, novel approach to problem solving. Possessing a unique capacity to harmonize unlike temperaments and focus them on common objectives, he promoted an unprecedented degree of international scientific cooperation. Von Karman was the moving force behind many now-famous institutions, including NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Cal Tech's Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory, and the USAF Scientific Advisory Board. His circle of colleagues included such diverse personalities as Dr. Hugh L. Dryden, the first deputy administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; General Bernard A. Schriever (USAF, ret.), the father of the USAF ballistic missile program; and Dr. William Pickering, former director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In a compact, nontechnical work intended for general readers, The Universal Man provides a rounded picture of this warm and eminently humane scientist's life and examines the extent to which personality influences the course of science.

Book Men wind and courage

Download or read book Men wind and courage written by Nancy Lynn Mess and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrent with the dawning of new technologies that allowed man to navigate the oceans of air, the Wright Brothers, who with scores of others including O. E. Williams, developed the stepping stones leading from primitive air navigation into what we have today. Mr. Williams’s activities occurred at Scranton, PA; Fenton, MI; and Mobile, AL. At the turn of the 20th century horse drawn vehicles and railroads were an integral part of man’s transportation needs. The presentation of MEN, WIND AND COURAGE is a retrospective of many transportation venues to include the various professions and occupations when these pioneers were afflicted with aviation fever. To appeal to many interests this book focuses on description for events and experiences rather than technicalities. This book is abundantly supplied with photos including WACO aircraft, Williams aircraft, flight schools, manufacturing facilities, hangars, flight-speedometer, patents, and the personal side of this remarkable man. During 1915 and 1916 Mr. Williams was the stellar attraction of the Patterson Aviators who were in popular demand throughout the midwest and lower Canada. The details within this book were painstakingly obtained from source documents with new facts and materials that will offer the perfect complement about pioneer aviators which do not exist on the Internet. Many of these men lived beyond Mr. Williams’s lifetime such as Elwood J. Junkin and Clayton J. Brukner who evolved the WACO airplanes. This book offers a number of exclusive interior photos of the WACO factory in Ohio. Lt. Cyrus Bettis established many military aviation firsts. Others, such as Russell B. North, never lost the passion for aviation. And contracted pilots Elling O. Weeks (Chicago, IL), C. Ray Benedict (Binghamton, NY), and Al Boshek (Scranton, PA) all had their trials and tribulations with their exhibition flights in the Williams Aeroplanes. The career of O.E. Williams is revealed along with those who were affected by his passion for aviation. Mr. Williams, a talented engineer who changed his vocation to focus on aviation, was a strong advocate for safety with innovative results.

This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During their long personal friendship and professional association, Theodore von Karman (1882-1963) and Hugh L. Dryden (1898-1965) exercised a pivotal if somewhat elusive influence over American aeronautics and spaceflight. Both decisive figures in organizing scientists and engineers at home and abroad, both men of undisputed eminence in their technical fields, their range of contacts in government, academia, the armed forces, industry, and professional societies spanned the globe to an extent unparalleled then as now. Moreover, because they coordinated their activities closely, their combined influence far exceeded the sum of each one s individual contributions. This paper illustrates their personal origins as well as the foundations of their friendship, how their relationship became a professional alliance, and their joint impact on the world of aeronautics and astronautics during the twentieth century. Charles Lindbergh takes readers wing-walking in a barnstorming biplane; Ernest K. Gann describes how the nocturnal spell of copiloting a DC-2 at night is broken by the unexpected terror of ice on its wings; a young ace named Chuck Yeager shatters the sound barrier and then loses consciousness in a violently tumbling rocket-plane. From the soaring to the harrowing, from flying a Piper Cub over the Rockies at the age of 14 to a nighttime carrier approach with an anxious, rusty lieutenant, Wild Blue puts readers right in the cockpit.

Book Deep Space Propulsion

Download or read book Deep Space Propulsion written by K. F. Long and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technology of the next few decades could possibly allow us to explore with robotic probes the closest stars outside our Solar System, and maybe even observe some of the recently discovered planets circling these stars. This book looks at the reasons for exploring our stellar neighbors and at the technologies we are developing to build space probes that can traverse the enormous distances between the stars. In order to reach the nearest stars, we must first develop a propulsion technology that would take our robotic probes there in a reasonable time. Such propulsion technology has radically different requirements from conventional chemical rockets, because of the enormous distances that must be crossed. Surprisingly, many propulsion schemes for interstellar travel have been suggested and await only practical engineering solutions and the political will to make them a reality. This is a result of the tremendous advances in astrophysics that have been made in recent decades and the perseverance and imagination of tenacious theoretical physicists. This book explores these different propulsion schemes – all based on current physics – and the challenges they present to physicists, engineers, and space exploration entrepreneurs. This book will be helpful to anyone who really wants to understand the principles behind and likely future course of interstellar travel and who wants to recognizes the distinctions between pure fantasy (such as Star Trek’s ‘warp drive’) and methods that are grounded in real physics and offer practical technological solutions for exploring the stars in the decades to come.
