Book The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine Vol 13

Download or read book The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine Vol 13 written by Edward Hungerford Goddard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine, Vol. 13: November, 1871 The ground plan seems to have been a hexagon, with two massive square towers anking the entrance towards the east. This part of the building remains intact as regards the walls, which are of great height and solidity. The windows of the hall from the upper story are over the entrance. The interior has an open court, from which are approaches to the living-rooms and staircases. The main features of the building are easily to be traced, and the whole forms an interesting study of a large residence of the early Perpendicular period. Wardour was attacked by a powerful force under the com mand of Sir Edward Hungerford, in May, 1643, and at a time when Lord Arundell was in attendance on King Charles the First at Oxford, but his lady, Blanche, refused to surrender, and, with her little garrison of twenty-five men, most heroically withstood the onslaught of soldiers and a bombardment which lasted five days. After defending the castle as long as it was tenable, she capitulated on honourable terms; but the republican leader having once gained possession, did not scruple to violate his engagements, and to plunder the mansion of its most valuable contents. It was then garrisoned by the Parliament, and placed under the command of General Ludlow, but it did not long remain in the hands of its captors. In the course of the summer Lord Arundell and Sir Francis Doddington invested it, and compelled Ludlow to surrender, after a gallant defence. The party left the ruins, and, crossing the park, visited the new castle, through the drawing rooms and noble picture galleries of which they were conducted by Lord Arundell himself. The por trait of Lady Blanche Arundell, by Angelica Kaufman, the heroic defender of the fortress, naturally attracted great attention, as did also the noble rotunda staircase. The chapel was also visited, and the company having partaken of refreshments, Mr. Swayne tendered their cordial thanks to Lord Arundell for his kind and hospitable reception. Book excerpt: 'Alice Hunt brilliantly reanimates this most extraordinary decade. It is a gripping tale of political and cultural crisis but also one of joy and hopeful innovation, told with eloquence and passion.' MALCOLM GASKILL 'A magisterial, compelling and eye-opening biography of Britain's great and extraordinary experiment.' SUZANNAH LIPSCOMB Events moved with giddying speed in the 1650s. After the execution of Charles I, 'dangerous' monarchy was abolished and the House of Lords was dismissed, sending shock waves across the kingdom. These revolutionary acts set in motion a decade of bewildering change and instability, under the leadership of the soldier-statesman Oliver Cromwell. England's unique and distinctive republican experiment may have been short-lived, but it changed the course of British history. It transformed the relationship between England, Scotland and Ireland, reset the compact between the monarch and the people, and re-fashioned the story the British told - and continue to tell - about themselves. REPUBLIC is a richly engrossing year-by-year account of this exhilarating and daring period. It tells the story of what Britain's republic was really like: why it failed, but also, what it got right.

Download or read book The Viking Blitzkrieg written by Martyn Whittock and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Viking Wars had not taken place, would there have been a united England in the tenth century? Martyn Whittock believes not, arguing that without them there would have been no rise of the Godwin family and their conflict with Edward the Confessor, no Norman connection, no Norman Conquest and no Domesday Book. All of these features of English history were the products, or by-products, of these conflicts and the threat of Scandinavian attack. The wars and responses to them accelerated economic growth; stimulated state formation and an assertive sense of an English national identity; created a hybrid Anglo-Scandinavian culture that spread beyond the so-called Danelaw; and caused an upheaval in the ruling elite. By looking at the entire period of the wars and by taking a holistic view of their political, economic, social and cultural effects, their many-layered impact can at last be properly assessed.
