Download or read book Defence and the Media in Time of Limited War written by Peter R Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Events in the Gulf Crisis of 1990–91 have highlighted the importance of the increasingly complex and difficult relations between Defence and the Media in time of War – especially in time of limited conflict when the well-being – let alone the security – of the home nation may not be affected. This problem has become especially acute given the growth of the new high technology media and its global spread and immediacy. The question of how to reconcile the competing demands for secrecy on the one hand and the public's right to know on the other is fast emerging as a major question of our times. In Brisbane during 3–5 April 1991, there was held what is believed to be the first ever International Conference on the topic of Defence and the Media in Time of Limited Conflict to look at this and other issues stemming from the problem. Jointly funded by the Queensland University of Technology and the Australian Department of Defence, the three-day Conference was a major success, attracting 160 delegates from Great Britain, the United States, Zambia, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, New Zealand, France, Indonesia and, of course, Australia. This volume publishes nearly all the papers delivered at this conference whose main focus was on post-1945 limited wars especially Vietnam, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, Grenada and the Gulf; all of which receive detailed analysis.

Download or read book Accidence Will Happen written by Oliver Kamm and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are standards of English alright—or should that be all right? To knowingly split an infinitive or not to? And what about ending a sentence with a preposition, or for that matter beginning one with "and"?We learn language by instinct, but good English, the pedants tell us, requires rules. Yet, as Oliver Kamm cleverly demonstrates in this new book, many of the purists' prohibitions are bogus and can be cheerfully disregarded. Accidence Will Happen is an authoritative and deeply reassuring guide to grammar, style, and the linguistic conundrums we all face.

Download or read book When Small Countries Crash written by Scott B. MacDonald and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public is fascinated with financial crashes. Historians portray the roar of an angry mob toppling presidents or prime ministers and destroying the property of those who are regarded as malefactors. And certainly, financial crisis is often a factor in political change. It is often overlooked, but nonetheless significant that one of the major causes for the French Revolution was the poor state of finances, with the nation coming to bankruptcy. Large systemic financial crises create history. Various actors, big and small, become caught in the drama, contributing to it in their own special way. When Small Countries Crash seeks to capture some of the drama of financial collapses and their impact on small countries, which the authors define as populations under 10 million, generally 5-6 million. MacDonald and Novo have selected countries that have had a financial crisis in the national economy; that included key actors; and where access to reliable data is available. As the authors demonstrate, the story of small countries suffering the costs of financial missteps is long and painful. They argue that smaller economies tend to be more vulnerable to economic shocks, many of which are externally generated. Small economies confront particular challenges in terms of economies of scale, diversification, and depth of expertise and workforce. The chapters in this absorbing book focus on Iceland, Latvia, Ireland, the Caribbean, Scotland, Finland, and Albania. This in-depth study is unique in its close look at financial disasters in countries that have, until now, been overlooked.
