Book Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre

Download or read book Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre written by Kevin Lane Dearinger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clyde Fitch (1865-1909) was the most successful and prolific dramatist of his time, producing nearly sixty plays in a twenty-year career. He wrote witty comedies, chaotic farces, homespun dramas, star vehicles, historical works, stark melodramas, and adaptations of European successes, but he was best known for his society plays, mirroring themes found in the novels of Henry James and Edith Wharton. In fact, Fitch collaborated with Wharton on a stage adaptation of her House ofMirth. He was also a gay man, although that gentler adjective was not the term of his time. He was bullied in school and baited by critics throughout his career for what they supposed of his private life. He responded with impressive strength and integrity. He was, at least for a short time, Oscar Wilde’s lover, and Wilde influenced his early plays, but Fitch’s study of Ibsen and other European dramatists inspired him to pursue the course of naturalism. As he became more successful, he took greater control of the staging and design of his plays. He was a complete man of the theatre and among the first names enrolled in New York’s theatrical hall of fame.

Book The Complete Book of 1910s Broadway Musicals

Download or read book The Complete Book of 1910s Broadway Musicals written by Dan Dietz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1910s shaped the future of the American musical. While many shows of the decade were imports of European operettas, and even original Broadway musicals were influenced by continental productions, the musicals of the 1910s found their own American voice. In The Complete Book of 1910s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz covers all 312 musicals that opened on Broadway during this decade. Among the shows discussed are The Balkan Princess, The Kiss Waltz, Naughty Marietta, The Firefly, Very Good Eddie, Leave It to Jane, Watch Your Step, See America First, and La-La-Lucille. Dietz places each musical in its historical context, including the women’s suffrage movement and the decade’s defining historical event, World War I. Each entry features the following: Plot summary Cast members Creative team, including writers, lyricists, composers, directors, choreographers, and producers Opening and closing dates Number of performances Critical commentary Musical numbers and the performers who introduced the songs Numerous appendixes include a chronology, discography, filmography, Gilbert and Sullivan productions, Princess Theatre musicals, musicals with World War I themes, and published scripts, making this book a comprehensive and significant resource. The Complete Book of 1910s Broadway Musicals will captivate and inform scholars, historians, and casual fans about this influential decade in musical theatre history.

Book Joseph Holloway s Abbey Theatre

Download or read book Joseph Holloway s Abbey Theatre written by Joseph Holloway and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until his death in 1944, Holloway attended almost every performance of the Abbey Theatre and daily recorded in his journal his reactions to plays and players and his comments about and conversations with literary and theatrical people. From the journal’s 221 bulky volumes, housed in the National Library of Ireland, Mr. Hogan and Mr. O’Neill have compiled this book of extracts from the approximately 25,000,000 words written by the Irishman. The years from 1899 to 1926 were chosen because they are generally considered to be the significant ones for the Abbey Theatre: the year of its founding to the production of Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars, which caused a riot in the theatre. Mr. Holloway attended every play during these years, as well as many rehearsals, and talked with nearly everybody who had anything to do with the theatre. This journal reflects the tensions, feuds, and anguish that produced one of the great theatres of modern times. The meticulous display of minute detail makes Joseph Holloway’s Abbey Theatre imperative reading for the student of modern theatre, particularly since its character as a daily account permits ready checking of dates listed in previous works about the Irish National Theatre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This documentary history covers a period of Irish political and dramatic climax that had an impact not only on the nation, but on the world as well. During these years both Ireland and its major theater attained a position, however precarious, of stability. De Valera and the Republicans laid down their arms and entered politics, while, by a state subsidy, the Abbey was formally recognized as the Irish National Theatre. The importance of these years goes far beyond Ireland itself because the Irish masterpieces of Sean O'Casey - The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, and The Plough and the Stars - made an impact upon world drama nearly as profound as that of Luigi Pirandello or of Eugene O'Neill. As this book is a documentary history, the story is told primarily through the words of the writers, actors, producers, critics, and members of the audience who themselves lived and created the story. However, these contemporary accounts are frequently amplified and put into modern perspective, particularly at crucial moments such as a major production, a final production, or a death. The authors have particularly done so with writers of some importance such as Edward Martyn, William Boyle, or T.C. Murray. Since the theater of these years was especially influenced by the state of the country, the authors give considerable space to the disruptive political events of the times. Always, however, this is done from the particular vantage point of the theater and its workers, for the Irish theater vigorously reacted to and quickly assimilated the turbulent political events of the day: the raids, the reprisals, the burnings, and the murders. These 1,800 days really break into two periods. The first comprises the violence of the Black and Tan War, the exhaustion that led to the treaty, and the bitterness occasioned by the treaty that led to the culminating ferocity of the civil war. The second is politically and theatrically a time of consolidation and assimilation. The two early plays of O'Casey might well be seen as symptoms of this healing process. The wound in the body politic was deep, however, and not to be so quickly or so easily healed; moreover, such matters as The Plough row and O'Casey's departure from Ireland inevitably seem to be later, more lasting symptoms of divisions that still fester in Ireland today. The authors' account of Ireland's drama is not merely confined to the capital city of Dublin, but also to Belfast, Cork, and the provinces. Also included are a full bibliography and cast listings of all the significant new plays produced or published during the period.

Book The Valley of Opportunity

Download or read book The Valley of Opportunity written by Steven F. Mehls and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1982 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication represents the latest Class I (History) to be written for the western slope of Colorado. Our three districts in this region of Colorado now have histories specifically for them. Such works provide a valuable and needed synthesis of history and literature for these areas and also gives our managers data that are used on a daily basis for land-use decision making. Multiple land use is a Bureau mission that is being met. Oil and gas, coal, oil shale and other energy minerals, not to mention rights-of-ways, grazing programs, recreation projects and land-use planning, are all supported by histories such as this. Resource Management Plans and subsequent Environmental Impact Statements that are produced for the Bureau's Area Offices are the foundations for long-term land-use management. The Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement is a Bureau pilot document and serves as a management tool for the Glenwood Springs Resource Area. This history, Volley of Opportunity supports the Resource Management Plan. In addition, a history provides background and support for the upcoming Grand Junction Resource Area Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement. The Volley of Opportunity has already been used for Oil Shale Environmental Statements and for the Federal Coal Leasing Program in the Grand Junction, Colorado, District. Truly, such histories are not only multiple-use in scope but are also management tools that provide basic understanding for land use decisions. Additionally, this history represents an ongoing effort to provide the public reader with a work that is not only interesting but is also well researched. In this way, another sector is satisfied. These histories are used by schools, libraries, universities and, of course, the general public. Again, multiple-use is served. Finally, as the Volley of Opportunity was being prepared, it happened that the City of Grand Junction's Centennial would occur in 1982. Coincidentally, the Glenwood Springs Resource Management Plan will be published in November 1982. Since this history serves several purposes, it is appropriate that it also is the Bureau's contribution to Grand Junction's Centennial celebration.
