  • Author : Vivian Bruce Conger
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2009-03-01

Download or read book The Widows Might written by Vivian Bruce Conger and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early American society, one’s identity was determined in large part by gender. The ways in which men and women engaged with their communities were generally not equal: married women fell under the legal control of their husbands, who handled all negotiations with the outside world, as well as many domestic interactions. The death of a husband enabled women to transcend this strict gender divide. Yet, as a widow, a woman occupied a third, liminal gender in early America, performing an unusual mix of male and female roles in both public and private life. With shrewd analysis of widows’ wills as well as prescriptive literature, court appearances, newspaper advertisements, and letters, The Widows’ Might explores how widows were portrayed in early American culture, and how widows themselves responded to their unique role. Using a comparative approach, Vivian Bruce Conger deftly analyzes how widows in colonial Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Maryland navigated their domestic, legal, economic, and community roles in early American society.

Book Widows The Middle East Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Widows The Middle East Asia and the Pacific written by Helena Znaniecka Lopata and published by Durham : Duke University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens whene the husband dies depends on the society, on the location of the widow in urban-rural or class terms, and on the widow's own personal resources. In some societies the woman is totally dependent upon a grown son and cannot remarry; in others, such as that in the United States, she is more dependent upon her own resouces and wishes. For some, widowhood results in a great loss of status; for others, it can mean loneliness and social isolation. Yet widowhood can mean greater social freedom for some women, a "blooming of personality. Even grief is experienced in various ways and degrees. Thus there is no such thing as a "widow type," only a great heterogenity in widowhood, as in "wifehood." Volume I analyzes the support systems and life-styles of widows in Australia, the Philippines, Korea, Iran, China, a Pacific island, India, Turkey, and Israel. Volume II : North America examines two communities in Canada, a Florida retirement community, and communities in several other locations, as well as the relative situations of homeowners, blacks, and poor ethnic populations.

Book excerpt: Flannery O'Connor has been studied and lauded under many labels: the Southern author whose pen captured the soul of a proud region struggling to emerge out of racism and poverty, the female writer whose independent spirit and tragically short life inspired a generation of women, the Catholic artist whose fiction evokes themes of sin and damnation, mercy and redemption. Now, and for the first time, The Abbess of Andalusia affords us an in-depth look at Flannery O'Connor the believer. In these pages you will come to know Flannery O'Connor not only as a writer and an icon, but as a theologian and apologist; as a spiritual director and a student of prayer; as a suffering soul who learned obedience and merited grace through infirmity; and truly, as the Abbess of her own small, but significant, spiritual house. For decades Flannery O'Connor the author has touched her readers with the brilliance of her books. Now be edified and inspired by the example of her life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three full-length sensual Regency romances make up this boxed set about a trio of widows. Extra! Extra! Read all about it ... In THE GOSSIP OF AN EARL, The Earl of Fennington has a secret identity—that of Mr. Pepperidge, editor of London's premiere gossip rag, The Tattler. While attending a garden party as Fennington, he meets and falls in love with Lady Emelia. The attraction is mutual, for despite knowing better, she allows him to kiss her behind a hedgerow. Who will know but them? Why, Mr. Pepperidge, of course! Desperate to spend more time with Emelia, Fennington employs a bit of blackmail to force Emelia to meet with him. Disguised as Mr. Pepperidge, he insists she provide him the on-dit she hears in Mayfair parlors. That, or he'll print the news of her kiss with the earl in The Tattler! With mistaken identities ruling the reports in the rag and a new Gossip Goddess sharing news of obscure aristocrats, is it any wonder the members of the ton love to hate gossip? Or do they really love gossip? When a widow just out of mourning returns to her position as a operative with the Foreign Office, she's assigned to help another spy regain his abilities after his experience with the horrors of war. What she doesn't know is that he's been assigned to her for an entirely different reason. Deception and intrigue highlight THE ENIGMA OF A WIDOW, a sensual tale of two spies with the same insane assignment—each other. Nothing makes a man more lonely than his secrets. The same might be said for women. THE SECRETS OF A VISCOUNT finds Godfrey, Viscount Thorncastle, with a secret he’d rather not tell anyone, including the woman for whom he has held a candle for over twenty years. Elise, the widow of Lord Lancaster, has had enough of marriage, but pining for the chance at motherhood, she may just have to consider Godfrey’s proposal. If he can just get it right. The man has some preconceived notions about his true love, none of which are true. But then, she has some of the same notions about him. And none of them are real! Misunderstandings must be overcome in this sensual tale of secrets and numbers.

Book Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War

Download or read book Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War written by Angela Smith and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using extensive data - mostly gleaned from the National Archives - this book examines the way in which British widows of servicemen who died in the First World War were represented in society and by themselves, exploring the intertwining discourses of social welfare, national identity, and morality that can be identified in these texts. Focusing on two widows, the book encourages their individual stories to emerge and gives a voice to an otherwise forgotten group of women whose stories have been lost under the literary tomes of middle-class writers such as Vera Brittain and May Wedderburn Cannon. The discussion is further informed by a wider reading of 300 other such files, which allows wider observations to be made about the nature of the discourses examined, and offers the most complete possible picture for such data. Offering a streamlined adaptation of the Discourse-Historical Approach to critical discourse analysis, Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War demonstrates how this model of analysis can be used to investigate a large body of data from a wide variety of sources, covering a long period of time. As such it will be useful to all scholars in their analysis of historical corpa.
