Excerpt: ...it was heard in the remotest room in the College. Little Dorrit opened the door from without, and they both entered. He was sitting in his old grey gown, and his old black cap, in the sunlight by the window, reading his newspaper. His glasses were in his hand, and he had just looked round; surprised at first, no doubt, by her step upon the stairs, not expecting her until night; surprised' again, by seeing Arthui Clennam in her company. As they came in, the same unwonted look in both of them which had already caught attention in the yard below, struck him. He did not rise or speak, but laid down his glasses and his newspaper on the table beside him, anj looked at them with his mouth a little open, and his lips trembling. When Arthur put out his hand, he touched it, but not with his usual state; and then he turned to his daughter, who had sat down close beside him with her hands upon his shoulder, and looked attentively in her face. "Father! I have been made so happy this morning!" "You have been made so happy, my dear?" "By Mr. Clennam, father. He brought me such joyful and wonderful intelligence about you! If he had not, with his great kindness and gentleness, prepared me for it, father--prepare"' me for it, father--I think I could not have borne it." Her agitation was exceedingly great, and the tears rolled down her face. He put his hand suddenly to his heart, ane" looked at Clennam. "Compose yourself, sir," said Clennam, "and take a little time to think. To think of the brightest arid most fortunate accidents of life. We have all heard of great surprises of joy. They are not at an end, sir. They are rare, but not at an end." "Mr. Clennam? Not at an end? Not at an end for--" He touched himself upon the breast, instead of saying "me." "No, ..".

Book Health of People Health of Planet and Our Responsibility

Download or read book Health of People Health of Planet and Our Responsibility written by Wael Al-Delaimy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book not only describes the challenges of climate disruption, but also presents solutions. The challenges described include air pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and related health impacts that range from heat stress, vector-borne diseases, food and water insecurity and chronic diseases to malnutrition and mental well-being. The influence of humans on climate change has been established through extensive published evidence and reports. However, the connections between climate change, the health of the planet and the impact on human health have not received the same level of attention. Therefore, the global focus on the public health impacts of climate change is a relatively recent area of interest. This focus is timely since scientists have concluded that changes in climate have led to new weather extremes such as floods, storms, heat waves, droughts and fires, in turn leading to more than 600,000 deaths and the displacement of nearly 4 billion people in the last 20 years. Previous work on the health impacts of climate change was limited mostly to epidemiologic approaches and outcomes and focused less on multidisciplinary, multi-faceted collaborations between physical scientists, public health researchers and policy makers. Further, there was little attention paid to faith-based and ethical approaches to the problem. The solutions and actions we explore in this book engage diverse sectors of civil society, faith leadership, and political leadership, all oriented by ethics, advocacy, and policy with a special focus on poor and vulnerable populations. The book highlights areas we think will resonate broadly with the public, faith leaders, researchers and students across disciplines including the humanities, and policy makers.

Book The See Through House

Download or read book The See Through House written by Shelley Klein and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A charming account of a daughter, a house and a fastidious dad' Sunday Times Shelley Klein grew up in the Scottish Borders, in a house designed on a modernist open-plan grid. With colourful glass panels set against a forest of trees, it was like living in a work of art. Her father, Bernat Klein, was a textile designer whose pioneering colours and textures were a major contribution to 1960s and 70s style. Thirty years on, Shelley moves back home to care for her father, now in his eighties: the house has not changed and neither has his uncompromising vision - or his distinctive way of looking at the world. Told with great tenderness and humour, this is Shelley's account of looking after an adored yet maddening parent and a piercing portrait of the grief that followed his death. 'A sad, funny, utterly fascinating book about families, home and how to say goodbye' Mark Haddon 'Original, moving and bracingly honest... often hilarious' Blake Morrison, Guardian 'It is strange that grief should produce such a life-affirming book, but it has. Read it for the solace it contains, or for its captivating descriptions. Either way, it's a delight' Telegraph

They do have a wonderfully straightforward view of the world, and a way with words that manages to make day-to-day life much more fun. In Out of the Mouths of Babes you'll find a fantastic selection of the side-splitting bloopers, hiccups, innocent misunderstandings and downright funny things that kids have come out with. For example: . Kids on love: 'If falling in love is anything like learning how to spell, I don't want to do it. It takes too long.' . Kids on music: 'Handel was half German, half Italian and half English.' . Kids on religion: 'St Paul cavorted to Christianity.' Out of the Mouths of Babes is a charming celebration of the unique, quirky - and usually entirely unintentional - humour of children everywhere, for adults who enjoy seeing the funnier side of life.
