Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whole Works of Roger Ascham, Vol. 2: Now First Collected and Revised, With a Life of the Author In this second volume of Ascham's works are contained the rest of his Letters, written between the years 1559 and 1568, (whilst Elizabeth was queen), and the Toxophilus. As a full account of the Letters has been given in Vol. I, it is unnecessary to speak about them here; and of the Toxophilus a few words only are needful. The first edition of the work was printed in quarto, London, 1545. It was reprinted 1571, and a third London edition in 1589. An octavo edition appeared at Wrexham in 1588: and the work is found in all the editions of the English Works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whole Works of Roger Ascham, Vol. 2: Now First Collected and Revised, With a Life of the Author; Letters Continued, and Toxophilus The text given in this volume is that of the first edition, with no other change than modernizing the spelling, except in old words, which were evidently pronounced then differently from now, and in these words the old spelling has been kept. A glossary of Old words has been added, on the plan adopted by Mr Mayor in his excellent edition Of the School-master. Download or read book Elizabeth I written by Carole Levin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection by historians, cultural critics and literary scholars examines a variety of the political, social, and cultural forces at work during the English Renaissance and beyond, forces that contributed to creating a wealth of artistic, literary and historical impressions of Elizabeth, her court, and the time period named after her, the Elizabethan age. Articles in the collection discuss Elizabeths' relationships, investigate the advice given her, explore connections between her court and the arts, and consider the role of Elizabeth's court in the political life of the nation. Some of the ways Elizabeth was understood and represented demonstrate society's fears and ambivalence about early modern women in power, while others celebrate her successes as England's first and only unmarried queen regnant. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students in a wide range of disciplines, including literary, cultural, historical and women's studies, as well as those interested in the life and times of Elizabeth I.

Download or read book Henry VIII and the Merchants written by Susan Rose and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing heavily from the State Papers of the King, Henry VIII and the Merchants traces Stephen Vaughan's careers as a servant of Thomas Cromwell and of Henry VIII in the 16th century. Stephen Vaughan, a Londoner with an international outlook, was a member of the Company of Merchant Taylors, as well as a Merchant Adventurer in the Low Countries. As a young man Vaughan was drawn into the employ of Thomas Cromwell and worked in his private office. Thus, Vaughan became heavily involved in the world of government and court politics at a time when the style, tempo and effectiveness of official life in London was changing rapidly and the world was quickly opening up as his travels to Europe drew him into the enticing world of business and finance. For the first time, this notable study uncovers the secrets of Vaughan's life from his relatively humble beginning to his high power career as an ambassador, spy, and financial agent of the crown on the Bourse at Antwerp. What is more, on a wider canvas this intimate tale shows how individuals were affected by and reacted to the drastic changes in religion, politics and everyday life under the tumultuous reign of Henry VIII.
