Download or read book My Life written by Havelock Ellis and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havelock Ellis was a British physician, psychologist and writer, social reformer and progressive intellectual who studied the history of human sexuality. Together with Albert Moll and Richard von Krafft-Ebing he was one of the founders of sexology. He co-authored the first English medical textbook on homosexuality in 1897 and also published works on various sexual practices and inclinations, as well as transgender psychology; he is also credited with having first introduced the terms narcissism and autoeroticism, later also adopted by psychoanalysis. The use of events from his inner and outer life and the discussion of his wife's life led him to write his own autobiography. He also claims that the autobiography was written to help others gain insight not only into his life, but into life itself.

Book Women and Politeness in Eighteenth Century England

Download or read book Women and Politeness in Eighteenth Century England written by Soile Ylivuori and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first in-depth study of women’s politeness examines the complex relationship individuals had with the discursive ideals of polite femininity. Contextualising women’s autobiographical writings (journals and letters) with a wide range of eighteenth-century printed didactic material, it analyses the tensions between politeness discourse which aimed to regulate acceptable feminine identities and women’s possibilities to resist this disciplinary regime. Ylivuori focuses on the central role the female body played as both the means through which individuals actively fashioned themselves as polite and feminine, and the supposedly truthful expression of their inner status of polite femininity.

Book The History of Sir George Ellison

Download or read book The History of Sir George Ellison written by Sarah Scott and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Sir George Ellison (1766) is an important novel, both utopian and dystopian. Sir George, a man of benevolence, follows the pattern of the female utopia set forth in Scott's first novel, A Description of Millenium Hall (1762). In this sequel, Scott addresses issues of slavery, marriage, education, law and social justice, class pretensions, and the position of women in society, consistently emphasizing the importance, for both genders and all classes and ages, of devoting one's life to meaningful work. Although she adopted a gradualist approach to reform, Scott's uncompromising revelation of the corruption of English society in her day is clear-sighted, arresting, and hard-hitting.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Lord Raingo written by Arnold Bennett and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 1968 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is based upon the experiences and dealings of Arnold Bennett's friend Lord Beaverbrook during the First World War. Sam Raingo seemingly has it all; money, a wife, a mistress and the good life. However, his health is failing and he is becoming bored. He develops a need to achieve something more and the ambtion is fulfilled, along with the gaining of a peerage, when the Government asks him to head up a propaganda department with the aim of keeping up civilian morale during the conflict. Bennett manages to take the reader deeply into Raingo's mind in describing the inevitable anxieties and attempted reconciliation of public and private emotions and stances. At the same time, a gripping story unfolds as would be expected from a semi-biographical work of his brilliant and controversial subject.
