Download or read book The Annotated We written by Vladimir Wozniuk and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AnnotatedWe represents the first fully annotated translation of Evgeny Zamiatin’s classic novel in English. Generally recognized as the first modern anti-utopian novel, Zamiatin’s We has puzzled scholars and critics alike, for it is both serious and playful, full of games. Long considered to be enigmatic, it stands out as unique among his works, and its importance is beyond doubt, for it not only holds the distinction of being the first work of its kind, but is also widely believed to have provided thematic elements for the two most famous dystopian works of the twentieth century, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. This new English translation employs language and syntax that mirror the precision and economy of Zamiatin’s Russian in his“poem in prose.” The commentary that accompanies the text sheds light on Zamiatin’s use of language as well as on the broad array of allusions that mark it, while at the same time suggesting many previously unacknowledged sources for the novel’s playfulness.

Download or read book Notes of a Private in Forrest s Cavalry Corps Expanded Annotated written by John Milton Hubbard and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the American Civil War came, John Hubbard joined the Confederate cavalry. Early in the war he made this observation: "...one day I met a soldier speeding a magnificent black horse along a country road as if for exercise, and the pleasure of being astride of so fine an animal. On closer inspection, I saw it was Bedford Forrest, only a private like myself, whom I had known ten years before down in Mississippi. I had occasion afterward to see a good deal of him." Nathan Bedford Forrest, known as "Devil Forrest" and "the Wizard of the Saddle" rose from a private soldier to one of the most important and innovative Confederate generals in the Civil War. Historian Shelby Foote has called Forrest "one of the two true geniuses produced by the Civil War," the other being Abraham Lincoln. Hubbard was in the Seventh Tennessee Regiment, eventually part of Forrest's cavalry. He was an educated man who brought an articulate and sober assessment to the work late in life. He was not at the Fort Pillow massacre of black troops and unfortunately attempts to justify it. He brings to this work the southern unreconstructed point of view but not altogether. Download or read book A Lincoln Man in the Rebel Army Annotated written by William Edgar Hughes and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2016-11-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Confederate memoir like no other. W.E. Hughes was an admirer of Abraham Lincoln before the Civil War for two reasons: 1. He saw Lincoln as a lawyer in the courtroom. 2. He saw Lincoln debate Stephen A. Douglas. Despite deciding that Lincoln was "a bigger man than the Little Giant—Douglas," when war came, Illinois-born Hughes went south to fight for the Confederacy. He gives his reasons and tells of his time in service in this very charming and lively memoir by a successful and intelligent man. In addition to his wartime experiences, Hughes shares a lifetime of tales of his adventures as a stage coach driver, cowboy, lawyer, real estate baron, and businessman. He traveled extensively and had a much-adored granddaughter who shared many of his adventures. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers, tablets, and smartphones.
