Book The Western Quarterly Review 1849 Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Western Quarterly Review 1849 Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by J. S. Hitchcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Quarterly Review, 1849, Vol. 1 We come, therefore, in behalf of personal independence, and ask each to think for himself, feel for himself, and act for himself. Reader, you are good against the world. You have as much right to ask the million to hear you, as the million have to demand your attention. We have no cord to bind you with - no collar of our own construction to place on your neck. Here you may preserve your identity - appear as God made you, and not be compelled to suppress your thoughts or feel ings, and thus in part annihilate yourself. Come, then, as you are - open the fountains of your own Spiritual life, that we may see who you are, and what there is in you, that the world should know. We would not abridge your liberty, and we dare not sit in judgment and condemn you, for you may prove, in the light of that unerring Wisdom which is eternal in the Heavens, far above us in all that is pure and true. The Western Quarterly Review comes also to act a part, in these unsettled times, in the construction of truthful institutions. It shall criticise things as they are, and spare not. It shall ex pose, with an unflinching probe, whatever is believed unsound and untruthful, no matter how consecrated it may be in the affections of its supporters. We only say to them, that the way is Open, the same channel is free to them, to repair, if possible, whatever breach any assault may occasion. They consented to the enlargement of the prisoner on a nolle prosseguz, on condition, that he should return with the parents, in the hope, that threats, or promised rewards, or a returning sense of justice and humanity, when he should arrive where the clothes of the child were laid, might yet induce him, to put them on a clue to finding him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Agriculture, Manufactures, Mechanic Arts, Internal Improvement, Commerce, and General Literature, 1849, Vol. 2 When we contemplate a map of this region, it appears plainly, that nature has delineated the outlines of a system of improvement, con forming to the principles of commerce which we have endeavored to illustrate; but she has left the details to be filled up and carried out by the intelligence, enterprise, and industry of its inhabitants. The Mississippi river, running from north to south, divides the valley into parts nearly equal, and constitutes the great commercial thorough fare of this region and should be regarded as the basis of a general system of internal improvement for the whole west, if not, indeed, for the entire Union. On this river, and within the central region, will be located the great commercial city of the valley - the place of exchange between the north and the south - the centre of a great system of in ternal improvement, as well as of commerce. The philosopher, the scholar, the philanthropist, and the statesman, may be approvc ed and respected, but the achievements of the hero dazzle enchant. The useful application of superior intellect to the o purposes of civil and domestic life, will ultimately ensure vene ration and gratitude: but what are these, compared With the en thusiastic glow of admiration, which the brilliant exploits of the' Warrior command! Vain arc the efforts of reason to destroy' this peculiar charm of military glory. Book Brownson s Quarterly Review 1848 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1848, Vol. 2 It is conceded that your ministers have written several able and learned works against unbelief, and in defence of religion but in these works they have only borrowed Catholic princi ples and arguments, conclusive when urged by us, but of no practical value when urged by them, because practically denied and refuted by their position outside of the Church, and by the other principles and arguments they must adopt and urge in their own defence. Actions speak louder than words. The rebel chief, in arms to overthrow his lawful sovereign, cannot preach loyalty with much efi'ect. His practical disloyalty more than neutralizes his speculative loyalty. The practical rejection of Catholicity by your ministers necessarily does more to spread infidelity and licentiousness than any Catholic principles and arguments they may urge can do to arrest their fatal progress. It is certain, and the experience of three hundred years has proved it, that Christianity is defensible only on Catholic ground, and every attempt to defend it on other grounds has failed. Philosophers have tried to defend it on philosophical grounds, but in doing so have only reduced it to a philosophy. Rationalists have attempted to do it on the ground of reason alone, and have obtained only the same result. Socialists andddmom'tiom to Protestants. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, 1849, Vol. 3 The salvation of the American re ublic depends on Catho licity. The principles adopted by Protestants and infidels, if logically developed, can give us nothing but the most ultra So cinlism; yet Catholics, at least many of them, the moment they come out of the sphere of what is immediately of faith, unwittingly adopt these very principles, and sustain in liter ature and politics premises which, in their legitimate con sequences, are hostile, not only to the Church, but to social order and to all natural morality. They mean nothing of all this; they love their religion, and would not knowingly do or say ought inconsistent with it but in preportion as they take part in the political world, they catch the spirit of the age, and that spirit is Socialistic, against which the Holy Father, Pius the Ninth, in his noble Encyclical, has solemnly warned us. What portion of the American population has outdone the nominally Catholic opulation of our cities, in their enthusiastic admiration of the ate infidel and Socialistic revolutions in Europe And does not all this prove that the bulk of our Catholic population do not understand the relations of their religion to the great questions of the day, that they do not understand their religion in its application to politics and social reforms, and, therefore, in these matters, borrow their notions from the world, which seeks, first of all, to crush the Church Catholicity can save our republic only by being practised in public as well as in private life, only by prescribing our public as well as private morals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Review, Vol. 22: September and December, 1837 May the time come when all bloodshed shall be considered as murder, whether in war or duels. War, said the good Bishop Porteus, is a game which, were their subjects wise, kings would never play at - and further he says, that, owing to the folly of mankind, though one murder makes a villain, yet he that murders a million is called a hero. Franklin, one of the wisest of men, hated war. At the close of the American revolution, one week after the treaty of peace was signed, he wrote thus May we never see another war, for, in my opinion, there never was a good war, nor a bad peace.
