Book Maritime Rights Movement Univ Microfilm

Download or read book Maritime Rights Movement Univ Microfilm written by Ernest R. Forbes and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1979-01-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for "Maritime Rights" which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. Ernest R. Forbes traces the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Professor Forbes challenges traditional assumptions in his emphasis upon a vigorous Maritime progressivism that transcended party affiliations. All the political parties tried to use the protest movement, but none had created it, nor had it a specific founder or leader. The agitiation was in fact a spontaneous expression of the economic and social frustrations of the Maritime people. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adoitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem.

Book Native Liberty Crown Sovereignty

Download or read book Native Liberty Crown Sovereignty written by Bruce A. Clark and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen essays explore some 500 years of literacy campaigns in vastly different societies: Reformation Germany, early modern Sweden and Scotland, 19th century US, 19th-20th century Russia and the Soviet Union, pre-revolutionary and revolutionary China, and a variety of Third World countries. The 1763 Royal Proclamation forbade non-natives under British authority to molest or disturb any tribe or tribal territory in British North America. Clark, a lawyer specializing in aboriginal rights, contends that this Proclamation had legislative force and that, since imperial law on this matter has never been repealed, the right to self-government continues to exist for Canadian natives. He also explores the difficulties of aboriginal self-government in the constitution and offers some advice to government and aboriginal negotiators. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxiety. Addiction. Depression. We associate these words with the challenges of modern life. Rarely do we consider how these conditions shaped past generations. Using archival sources, testimonies, and her grandfather Walter Parker’s experiences, the author not only paints a vivid picture of life in an English Victorian village, but she also draws upon psychological theory to explore the lives of her working-class ancestors. What did your forebears inherit from their parents? Which psychological characteristics did your ancestors hand down? A Victorian’s Inheritance can help you find answers.

Book Microform Sets in U S and Canadian Libraries

Microform Project and published by Washington, D.C. : Association of Research Libraries. This book was released on 1984 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the background of the Association of Research Libraries Microform Project and summarizes results of the survey from which the database of the project's clearinghouse on the bibliographic control of microforms has been constructed. The Microform Project was established in 1981 to assist libraries, microform publishers, and the bibliographic utilities in their efforts to achieve bibliographic access to titles in microform sets. The primary tool in providing this assistance is a Microform Cataloging Clearinghouse, the main purposes of which are to facilitate the cataloging of titles in microform sets and prevent duplication of effort. The clearinghouse database is based on the results of a survey sent to participants in the four major bibliographic utilities as well as the few major libraries that do not participate in them. The 535 useful survey returns which were received show that a large number of libraries catalog titles in microform sets and that most of them create machine-readable records for at least some of the sets they catalog. A copy of the survey questionnaire and additional information on the survey and the clearinghouse are appended. (DMC)
