Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, Vol. 46: June 1900; New Series, Vol. V As there are workers and drones, so there are students with all sorts of incomes but I do not believe there is such a wide difference in this matter as in America, and the men who must live frugally are in the majority. A man I knew well in Berlin, the son of a clergyman, had thirty dollars a month to pay all his expenses. There were many like him. And there are plenty who live on less. The student rents a room for which he pays fro five to eight dollars a month. This includes his morning coffee and rolls. His fire costs him about five cents a day when he has one. In the smaller university towns I believe the most of the students have a study and a sleep ing room adjoining, but in the cities many of the men have one room which serves for all. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, Vol. 7: January, 1902 It is no disrespect to the splendid literatures which are embodied in the French and the German tongues and. No lack of appreciation of the services of those great peeples to civilization and to culture, to point out that of modern languages the English is easily the first and the most powerful, for it is the greatest instrument of communication that is now in use among men upon the earth. It is the speech of an aggressive people among whom individual liberty and personal initiative are highly prized. It falls short, no doubt, of the philosophical pliability of the Greek and of the scientific ductility of the German; but what is there in the whole field of human passion and human action that it cannot express with freedom and with a power all its own? Turn Othello into German or compare the verse of Shelley or of Keats with the graceful lines of some of their French contemporaries, and learn the peculiar power of the English speech. In simple word or sonorous phrase it is unequaled as a medium to reveal the thoughts, the feelings, and the ideas of humanity. One's hold upon the English tongue is measured by his choice of words and by his use of idiom. The composite character of modern English offers a wide field for apt and happy choice of expression. The educated man, at home with his mother-tongue, moves easily about in its Saxon, Roman, and Latin elements, and has gained by long experience and wide reading a know ledge of the mental incidence of words as well as of their artistic effect. He is hampered by no set formulas, but manifests in his speech, spoken and written, the characteristic powers and appreciation of his nature. Download or read book The Western Journal of Education Vol 34 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Journal of Education, Vol. 34: January, 1928 The thirty-fourth annual session of the California Teachers Association, Southern Section, in Los Angeles, December 21, 22, 23, 1927, was the culmination of a great educational year in Southern California. Albert F. Vandegrift, head of the mathematics department, Belmont High School, Los Angeles, president of the association, had prepared a program of great interest. He had secured speakers from all sections of the United States. This made the convention cosmopolitan in character and widespread in educational outlook. The California Teachers Association, Southern Section, meeting was a tremendous affair. Twenty-six thousand programs were printed for this meeting. In fact, neither the national meeting of the N. E. A. in the summer nor the winter meeting of the Department of Superintendents transcend this Los Angeles meeting in magnitude. At the same time and moment in three separate auditoriums seating from three to five thousand persons, meetings were in progress before audiences that filled each place. Of section meeting places there were thirty-one scattered over the city, in which matters concerning the manifold phases of education were discussed. During the week of December 19, in conjunction with the big session of the Southern California teachers, eighteen other teacher institutes were held during the first three days of the week. At this time institutes of Imperial County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Alhambra, Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Pomona Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica were in session. The brunt of carrying on this great session fell upon the officers of the Association. Working with President Albert F. Vandegrift were Vice President Kathleen D. Loly, head of the language department, Pasadena High School. Pasadena; Treasurer Ernest P. Branson, director of research, Long Beach city schools, Long Beach; Council Representatives Henry G.Clement, Superintendent of Schools, Redlands; Christine A. Jacobsen, Thirty-Seventh Street School, Los Angeles; Ex-officio A. R. Clifton, Superintendent of Schools, Monrovia, and Executive Secretary F. L. Thurston. Mr. Thurston, the executive secretary of the California Teachers Association, Southern Section, had the tremendous responsibility of getting the program printed. He had the job of seeing that fifty-two speakers were at their designated speaking places, which ran from Santa Barbara on the north to San Diego and El Centro two hundred and fifty miles to the south; from Santa Monica on the shore of the Pacific Ocean to San Bernardino and Riverside at the foot of snowclad mountains one hundred miles distant. Mr. Thurston is one of the most energetic of teacher association executives in the United States, and the smooth running of the mechanics of the convention was due to his able management. Among the speakers present were four from the University of Chicago. They were Doctor Charles H. Judd, director The School of Education; Doctor Henry C. Cowles, professor of botany; Doctor W. H. Burton, associate professor of education; Doctor Percy H. Boynton, professor of American literature. From Teachers College, Columbia University, there was present Doctor David Snedden, professor of education. From Northwestern University came Doctor Ralph Dennis, dean of the university. The University of Wisconsin was represented by Doctor Grant Showerman. From the University of Kansas came Doctor E. H. Lindley, the chancellor. From the University of Minnesota was Doctor F. J. Kelly, dean of administration. Indiana University was represented by Doctor H. L. Smith, dean of the School of Education. Two State Directors of Education were on the program from the two ends of the United States - William John Cooper, Director of Education for the S.
