Carib Indians inhabit islands of dense rain forest, practicing their cannibalism. Huge sea monsters lurk on mysterious islands guarding the treasures of their Scottish master. This is A West Indian Adventure. Amongst these adventures, two boys, Henry and Ben, looking for their relatives become lifelong friends. Together, they must overcome their fears of abandonment, the danger of pirates and Carib Indians, and the sorrow of death. A West Indian Adventure is about facing your troubles and resolving them with the help of good friends and the Lord...and having the adventure of a lifetime along the way. Author Julie Straughan offers a creative world often forgotten as readers relive A West Indian Adventure. Julie Straughan, born in Miami, Florida, spent half of her childhood in the Florida Keys, where she searched the mangrove islands for shells and pirate treasures. Her father passed away when she was seventeen years old, but with the help of her mother and the Lord, she was able to overcome the sorrow. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic College. Her desire for research led her to Jamaica, through Hurricane Gilbert and its devastation, and inspired her to travel to Scotland, where she learned of her own Scottish heritage. She is currently pursuing her great interests in nature, history, and archaeology.

Book Caribbean English Passages

Download or read book Caribbean English Passages written by Tobias Döring and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 264 pages. Book excerpt: Tobias Döring uses Postcolonialism as a backdrop to examine and question the traditional genres of travel writing, nature poetry, adventure tales, autobiography and the epic, assessing their relevance to, and modification by, the Caribbean experience. Caribbean-English Passages opens an innovative and cross-cultural perspective, in which familiar oppositions of colonial/white versus postcolonial/black writing are deconstructed. English identity is thereby questioned by this colonial contact, and Caribbean-English writing radically redraws the map of world literature. Book Afro Caribbean Poetry and Ritual

Download or read book Afro Caribbean Poetry and Ritual written by P. Griffith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on orally transmitted cultural forms in the Caribbean, this book reaffirms the importance of myth and symbol in folk consciousness as a mode of imaginative conceptualization. Paul A. Griffith cross-references Kamau Brathwaite and Derek Walcott s postcolonial debates with issues at seminal sites where Caribbean imaginary insurgencies took root. This book demonstrates the ways residually oral forms distilled history, society, and culture to cleverly resist aggressions authored through colonialist presumptions. In an analysis of the archetypal patterns in the oral tradition - both literary and nonliterary, this impressive book gives insight into the way in which people think about the world and represent themselves in it.
