Book International Handbook on Geographical Education

Download or read book International Handbook on Geographical Education written by Rod Gerber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased to have been asked by Rod Gerber to provide a preface to such a book. Not least because of the twenty-four chapters, eight are written by former students or colleagues with whom I have worked in the past and whom I still meet at conferences on geographical education. It is with a certain pride and joy that I note the progress which has been made in geographical education both in its day to day teaching and in research, in the twenty years following the end of my term of office as Chair of the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union (CGEIUG). My successors, Joe Stoltman, Hartwig Haubrich, Rod Gerber and now Lea Houtsonen, have done much and are continuing to work hard, to foster the development of geographical education. This book is proof, if proof were needed, that the international collaboration in this field, is alive and well, with contributions coming from all the continents (except Antarctica!). It would be a moribund subject that remained unaffected in one way or another by developments on the 'great world stage', as Fairgrieve (1926) would have put it. And, as Rod Gerber shows, the issues of globalisation, of cultural encounters, of differing value systems, of new technologies, of variable economic development and of environmental quality, all feature as topics which influence and are influenced by, geographical education.

Book Buttress s World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations

Download or read book Buttress s World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations written by Jean C. Swinbank and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of over 60 000 entries, including significantly more than 20% new or revised material, not only updates its predecessor but also continues the policy of extending coverage to areas dealt with only sparsely in previous editions. Special attention has been paid to the Far East, Australasia and Latin America in general, and to the People's Republic of China in particular. The cross-referencing between a defunct organization and its successor (indicated by ex and now) introduced into the last edition, has been extended. Otherwise the policies adopted in previous editions have been retained. All kinds of organizations are included - international, national, governmental, individual, large or small - but strictly local organizations have been omitted. The subject scope includes activities of all kinds, in the fields of commerce and industry, education, law, politics, public administration, religion, recreation, medicine, science and technology. The country of origin of a national organization is given in brackets, unless it is the home country of the title language or can be deduced readily from the title itself. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are also added in brackets. Equivalences are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. A select bibliography guides the reader to specialist works providing more detailed information.

Book Buttress s World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations

Download or read book Buttress s World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations written by L. Pitman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous edition of this directory extended its coverage of the Far East, Australasia and Latin America, areas previously under-represented. For this new edition emphasis has been given to increasing the number of entries for organizations from Britain, the United States and Australia, and particular attention has been paid to new political organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The number of entries included has gone up to over 68,000 of which over 9,000 are new or amended. Cross-references from defunct organizations in the previous edition have been deleted, and references (indicated by ex and now) added for organizations which have changed their name since the previous edition. As before, the range of organizations included is broad and only purely local organizations have been excluded. This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are given where appropriate and equivalencies are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography. I would like to thank Henry Heaney and Graeme Mackintosh for their advice, and David Grinyer for his technical support. L. M. Pitman Bibliography Adams, R. (ed.) Book Educational Research a Beginner s Guide

Download or read book Educational Research a Beginner s Guide written by Allyson Sesay and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a rudimentary exposure to the fi eld of educational research and an attempt to allay the unwarranted fear of those who perceive research as a highly technical and complex scholarly activity carried out by persons in the sciences. The author takes the position that anyone can do research and that it can be an interesting and very worthwhile experience. Educational research, particularly action research, which the author emphasizes, is an invaluable exercise about which everyone in education should be knowledgeable or at least be familiar. Starting with an explication of some salient concepts in the study of research (e.g., research, educational research, research problem v. research topic, hypothesis, experimental v. non-experimental research) , the book takes the reader through the process of conducting a research problem from problem selection and statement, signifi cance, review of literature, methodology, data analysis, fi ndings to recommendations and conclusions. Detailed descriptions of the American Psychological Association (APA) style of referencing with ample examples are provided. The book is written in simple language so that even high school students will be able to acquire a fairly good understanding of each contents. Though the primary target population is undergraduate students of education, the contents are broad enough to provide a guide for students in other disciplines, as well as whet the appetite of the general reader who seeks only a basic knowledge of research and/or educational research.

Book The Columbia Guide to West African Literature in English Since 1945

Download or read book The Columbia Guide to West African Literature in English Since 1945 written by Oyekan Owomoyela and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed by a premier scholar of African literature, this volume is a comprehensive guide to the literary traditions of Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria, five distinct countries bound by their experience with colonialism. Oyekan Owomoyela begins with an overview of the authors, texts, and historical events that have shaped the development of postwar Anglophone literatures in this region, exploring shifts in theme and the role of foreign sponsorship and illuminating recent debates regarding the language, identity, gender, and social commitments of various authors and their works. His introduction concludes with a bibliography of key critical texts. The second half of the volume is an alphabetical tour of writers, publications, concepts, genres, movements, and institutions, with suggested readings for further research. Entries focus primarily on fiction but also touch on drama and poetry. Featured authors include Chris Abani, Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Cyprian Ekwensi, Uzodinma Chukuka Iweala, Helen Oyeyemi, and Wole Soyinka. Topics range from the European origins of African literature and the West African diaspora to the development of an "African personality," the establishment of a regional publishing industry, and the global literary marketplace. Owomoyela also discusses such influences as the postwar emergence of Onitsha Market Literature, the Mbari Club, and the importance of the Noma Award. Owomoyela's portrait points to the major impact of West African literature on the evolution of both African and world literatures in English. Sure to become the definitive text for research in the field, The Columbia Guide to West African Literature in English Since 1945 is a vital resource for newcomers as well as for advanced scholars seeking a deeper understanding of the region's rich literary heritage.
