Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the more aggressive and confrontational tactics we hear about, evangelism has developed a bad connotation. Doors are shut hurriedly, phone calls end abruptly, and e-mails left unanswered. After all, isn't this a task better handled by the pastor? Perhaps it's time to reexamine John Wesley's model of evangelism as a full, natural circle—where it's a communal beginning point rather than a solitary end. The central motive of authentic evangelism is: Having received a message that's made all the difference in our lives, we desire to share that message with others in the hope that it will transform their lives as well. Wesley models an evangelism that reaches out and welcomes, invites, and nurtures, and speaks to both head and heart. "Evangelism is about relationship," the authors write. "How we are in relationship to God, who is able to transform us into new beings. How we are in relationship to our neighbor, whom we must love like ourselves." As one reviewer says, "Knight and Powe have given us a relational book. They describe the deep connection between John Wesley's thoughts, Charles Wesley's hymns, scholarly thinking about evangelism and biblical understandings of the gospel—all in relation to the needs, concerns, and hopes of everyday people." Learn on your own or as a congregational group from this practical study on living an evangelistic life that demonstrates the transforming power of loving God and neighbor.

Book excerpt: The fall of man resulted in Adam and Eve losing all consciousness of God. They woke up to self and found themselves imprisoned by a completely new nature—the sin nature—which would poison the entire human race for all time. From then until now, the troubles of the world—wars, man’s inhumanity to man, his dependency on cruel vices, and the habits of hell—are all caused by the sin nature which rules every person. Of course the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ broke the hold of this deadly yoke and repositioned the believer in Christ. So why do Christians struggle so hard to live for God? In this revelatory book, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart explains how the sin nature, which remains in Christians, can be reactivated, and how victory over the world, the flesh, and the Devil can only be maintained through faith in the Cross of Christ.

Download or read book Analyzing the Psalms written by Ernst R. Wendland and published by Sil International, Global Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACEThe aim of this textbook is to introduce Bible students and translators to the basic compositional structure and literary style of Hebrew poetry, especially the lyric-liturgical poetry found in the Book of Psalms (the Psalter). It is also intended to give readers some idea of the functions of the different psalms, emphasizing the manner in which these texts were used, and are still being used, to carry out several important communicative purposes. We shall see how the psalmists constructed these beautiful prayer-songs so as to express their deepest spiritual needs, problems, thoughts, and emotions---to God first of all, but also to the great assembly of fellow believers. Although the basic principles that are learned here focus specifically on the Book of Psalms, they can also be applied in the many passages, both long and short, that have been written as poetry in the Old Testament, especially in the prophetic books. The approach to be followed is known as "discourse analysis." This simply means that during the course of our study we will try to examine the different aspects of these poetic texts as an integrated whole. The focus will be upon the formal features of the psalms, on both the higher as well as the lower levels of discourse structure. But elements of content (e.g., key terms) and function (e.g., psalm types or genres) will also receive due consideration.

Book Praise Seeking Understanding

Download or read book Praise Seeking Understanding written by Jason Byassee and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise Seeking Understanding sits at the intersection of three important fields in theology: theological exegesis, Augustinian studies, and contemporary church practice. Jason Byassee deftly brings the three together, revealing an important symbiotic relationship between them -- a relationship hitherto largely ignored. Though current exegetical methods have swung away from a Christological reading of the Old Testament -- rejecting in particular Augustine's treatment of the text -- Byassee believes that is a mistake we must remedy. Using a recent translation of Augustine's Enarrationes in Psalmos, Byassee describes in depth Augustine's psalm hermeneutic and his approach to scripture generally, offering a defense of these views in conversation with recent work in theological exegesis.
