Book The First Day and Other Stories

Download or read book The First Day and Other Stories written by Devorah Baron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Who knew? That a Jewish village in Eastern Europe was observed by a skeptical, feminist eye, transformed into agile, delicate, earthy stories, written in Hebrew, a language never learned by most women? That a world of men and of women, deserted, divorced, unloved--later decimated by the Nazis--could spring to life again, in stunning translations that expose the stories' biblical moves and modernist countermoves? Now we know: Hebrew fiction and English fiction just gained an astonishing foremother. Sit, take a bite, read."—Mary Felstiner, Professor of History at San Francisco State University, author of To Paint Her Life: Charlotte Salomon in the Nazi Era "We know the voice of the shtetl through Shomlom Aleichem, I. B. Singer, and others; now we have a woman's perspective in the work of Dvora Baron. This mysterious, eccentric author is wonderfully translated for the first time in English, just as Israelis are beginning to treasure her. It is a triumph for literature, for women, and for readers that she is now available to us."—E. M. Broner, author of A Weave of Women, The Telling, and Bringing Home the Light

Book Reading the Wife Sister Narratives in Genesis

Download or read book Reading the Wife Sister Narratives in Genesis written by Hwagu Kang and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Genesis introduces three similar wife/sister narratives, commonly thought to be originating from different sources because of their repetitive entries. This research explores the wife/sister narratives in Genesis (Gen 12:10–13:1, 20:1–18, and 26:1–11), and it aims to provide an understanding of the three stories as a whole by uncovering its context by textlinguistic and literary type-scene analysis. Textlinguistic analysis helps us to see how each wife/sister narrative functions in its context, while type-scene analysis emphasizes how the three narratives develop and contribute to the patriarchal narratives through their similarities and variations. Although the traditional type-scene analysis studies recurrent fixed motives in texts, this study focuses much more on literary aspects such as characterization, theme, and plot. Through this study, the three wife/sister stories will elaborate that the patriarchal narratives are not results of different authors, but the well-developed products of a single author. The three wife/sister stories work together to highlight God’s faithfulness to his promises (Gen 12:1–3).

Book The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel

Download or read book The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel written by Linda Thompson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1987-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, Thomas L. Thompson has written at the intersection of biblical theology and archaeology. Origin Tradition of Ancient asks important questions about historicity in general and Israel's history in particular-including, perhaps most importantly, at what point Israel's history begins. After surveying the recent literature on the subject, Thompson closely examines the Pentateuchal tradition as a narrative of Israel's history, and offers detailed exegesis of the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus, including Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and the sojourn in the wilderness. He closes with a discussion of chronology and historiography.
