Early in her garden ing career this fact impressed itself upon the author's mind. A study of the book reveals the method and gives a large quantity of applied example. Book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint written by Reginald John Farrer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Rock-Garden Nowadays it is, indeed, becoming for a new 'gardening book to slink into the world under cover of an apology; and it had been my intention to plead, in excuse, that this volume of mine held no presumptuous notion of giving help to any rival gardener (for all true gardeners are rivals). I see, however, that such a plea would at once make publication a mere impertinence. There fore I will frankly hope that some of my readers may consider this book's existence justified by the help it gives them. But if some are inclined to resent the appearance of yet another work on gardening, others may well cavil, I fear, at its confessed incompleteness and inadequacy. To these I plead that only the most stringent considerations of 'space could have compelled the many omissions that they will mark in my pages. I had originally dealt faithfully with all my plants, and if any reader now vainly search this book for a detailed treatment of Aethionema, Silene, Lychnis, Veronica, and many another treasure, let him blame not me, but the pitiless blue pencil that made such a massacre of the innocents. Faced by cruel alternatives, I chose rather. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Garden Design Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Garden Design Classic Reprint written by Charles Thonger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Garden Design Making consists in the endeavour to duplicate a whole landscape on a small scale - this was an error into which Brown's followers blindly fell - but because so much that is of value to us may be gathered from an intelligent study of the means by which Nature achieves her most beautiful effects. The disposition of wood and water in a stretch of well-balanced scenery, the beautifully pro portioned effect of level and rising ground, of valleys and hills; all these afford an object lesson, which, at some time or other, is bound to prove suggestive when endeavouring to forecast results in artificially arranged grounds. Nature, then, is the school where the novice should go to be thoroughly taught the rudiments of his art. Not only will he learn much that is not to be found in books, but his love of the picturesque and beautiful will be fostered and encouraged - a necessary proceeding if he is to achieve any measure of success as a maker of gardens. Download or read book Come Into the Garden Classic Reprint written by Grace Tabor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Come Into the Garden IT is appropriate to explain that in a book of this character there may be an appearance of inconsistency to the layman in the spelling of plant names. The nomenclature of Bailey's Encyclopcedia of Horticulture has been followed, however, with the exception of the capitaliza tion of the names when they appear apart from their botanical components. Personally, the author believes a page presents a more agree able appearance to the eye when the names of such plants as may be referred to thereon are not treated as proper names; and that it may be read with greater facility and a less disturbed sense of values as a consequence. For those desiring to pursue further reading or study along the lines of any particular chapter, a bibliog raphy of standard works dealing with each chap ter subject will be found at the back of the book, just before the Index. Download or read book The Book of Garden Furniture Classic Reprint written by Charles Thonger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Garden Furniture Beautiful flowers, well-kept lawns and noble trees these do not make good gardens, and this fact must be my excuse for writing these pages. In striving after artistic effects, mere cultural skill will avail us nothing, if we do not possess that faculty for grouping and arrange ment which is inseparable from the skilled gardener. Further, we must be prepared to expend a considerable amount of thought and care on those objects of garden furniture, which have come to be regarded either as necessities or as desirable adjuncts to the well-kept pleasure grounds. It is more than possible to completely Spoil an otherwise good efiect by the introduction of unsuitable or ugly summer-houses, seats, sundials, and statuary; and I shall endeavour briefly to indicate the styles suited to various gardens, the manufacture of those which can be made without skilled assistance, and the positions which each may occupy to the best advantage. In early times, buildings and decorations in stone and wood were much more freely employed in gardens than they are to-day, and vast sums were spent in ancient Rome and Greece on these costly objects. Varro's garden at Casinum contained, among other costly features, bridges, a large aviary, and Open-air temples. During the Augustan age, statues and fountains appear to have been introduced; and among the wonders of Pliny's famous Tusculan gardens were summer-house's in dazzling marble, B 2 the book OF garden furniture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden of Dreams Ith long, swinging steps the man skirted the little valley and, facing the rising sun took the road to the right that wound upward over the mountain. There marched, visualized before him, recol lections of other times, when, bareheaded even as now, freckled-faced, and often, dirty, he had trotted happily along intent on the morning's business the filling, perhaps, of his shiny pail with the wild strawberries which grew scarlet drops of concentrated lusciousness beneath their protecting leaves of green - ln the wooded outskirts of old Al Somer's meadow. Almost he was tempted to turn aside, to slip down through the fields at his left in search of them, until he remembered that they would not be ripe for a month or more. The spring is late this year, he mur mured regretfully. Ah well, it could afford to be late. For him it would always be spring hereafter. He threw back his head, unconsciously his hands sought his pockets, his lips drew up in a whistle - the tune was one that had been pop ular with the country lads when he was a boy. Book The Well Considered Garden

Download or read book The Well Considered Garden written by Mrs. Francis King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Well-Considered Garden The wide-spread interest in gardening that is steadily growing throughout the land will have prepared a large public for the reception of such stimulating encouragement as will be found in the following pages. One thinks of a great and fertile field ready ploughed and sown, and only waiting for genial warmth and moisture to make it burst forth into life and eventual abundance. The book will come as these vivifying influences. The author's practical knowledge, keen insight, and splendid enthusiasm, her years of labor on her own land and her constant example and encouragement of others - combine to make her one of those most fitted to direct energy, to suggest and instruct - to communicate her own thought and practise to willing learners. Many are those who love their gardens, many who know their plants, many who understand their best ways of culture. All these qualities or accomplishments are necessary, but besides and above them all is the will or determination to do the best possible - "to garden finely" - as Bacon puts it.
