Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: young adult fiction fantasy..Thirteen year old Alan Wilson and his dog found what looked like an empty box in a recycle dumpster. It was one of hundreds he'd been hired to unload for a man who'd taken a consignment to sell in his second-hand store. When Alan, and his friend, Ted O'Malley, retrieved the box it started a series of events that changed their lives. The box was not empty and when they finally got it home, Alan could see that it glowed and hummed as it sat in his garage. Ted could not see these things. The dog, a large flat-coated retriever, Streak wouldn't let anyone get near the box and when Chris, Alan's father encountered this strange phenomenon it shattered memories of a hidden past. An unknown great-grandfather is discovered, a story that begins before Christ was born, is told, two royal brothers locked in a bloody war, a strange birthmark, and a humble weaver are thrown together in a timeless quest for a treasure more valuable than gold, then life itself. As the story proceeds Robin Dennis, a girl with amazing gifts becomes a pawn in one man's desperate quest to obtain the contents of the box; one hundred small blue rugs over twenty-five hundred years old. In Ceylon, in 500 AD, the weaver created a magical gift after Buddha visited his town and spoke with him. The weaver's orders from the holy man were simple; make one hundred rugs, a gift for someone of the weaver's choosing, and take your dog for protection, as you work. The weaver completes his task and when he presents the rugs to one of the royal brothers it brings three families together today, still embattled over the Weaver's Gift.

Book The Gift of the Face

Download or read book The Gift of the Face written by Shamoon Zamir and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian is the most ambitious photographic and ethnographic record of Native American cultures ever produced. Published between 1907 and 1930 as a series of twenty volumes and portfolios, the work contains more than two thousand photographs intended to document the traditional culture of every Native American tribe west of the Mississippi. Many critics have claimed that Curtis's images present Native peoples as a "vanishing race," hiding both their engagement with modernity and the history of colonial violence. But in this major reappraisal of Curtis's work, Shamoon Zamir argues instead that Curtis's photography engages meaningfully with the crisis of culture and selfhood brought on by the dramatic transformations of Native societies. This crisis is captured profoundly, and with remarkable empathy, in Curtis's images of the human face. Zamir also contends that we can fully understand this achievement only if we think of Curtis's Native subjects as coauthors of his project. This radical reassessment is presented as a series of close readings that explore the relationship of aesthetics and ethics in photography. Zamir's richly illustrated study resituates Curtis's work in Native American studies and in the histories of photography and visual anthropology.

Eliana is a model citizen of the island, a weaver in the prestigious House of Webs. She also harbors a dangerous secret—she can dream, an ability forbidden by the island’s elusive council of elders. No one talks about the dreamers, the undesirables ostracized from society. But the web of protection Eliana has woven around herself begins to unravel when a young girl is found lying unconscious in a pool of blood on the stones outside the house. Robbed of speech by her attackers, the only clue to her identity is one word tattooed in invisible ink across her palm: Eliana. Why does this mysterious girl bear her name? What links her to the weaver—and could she hold Eliana’s fate in her hand? As Eliana finds herself growing closer to this injured girl she is bound to in ways she doesn’t understand, the enchanting lies of the island begin to crumble, revealing a deep and ancient corruption. Joining a band of brave rebels determined to expose the island’s dark secrets, Eliana becomes a target of ruthless forces determined to destroy her. To save herself and those she loves, she must call on the power within her she thought was her greatest weakness: her dreams.

Book Birth of a Dream Weaver

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Oprah.com's "17 Must-Read Books for the New Year" and O Magazine's "10 Titles to Pick up Now." “Exquisite in its honesty and truth and resilience, and a necessary chronicle from one of the greatest writers of our time. ” —Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Guardian, Best Books of 2016. “Every page ripples with a contagious faith in education and in the power of literature to shape the imagination and scour the conscience.” —The Washington Post From one of the world’s greatest writers, the story of how the author found his voice as a novelist at Makerere University in Uganda Birth of a Dream Weaver charts the very beginnings of a writer’s creative output. In this wonderful memoir, Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o recounts the four years he spent at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda—threshold years during which he found his voice as a journalist, short story writer, playwright, and novelist just as colonial empires were crumbling and new nations were being born—under the shadow of the rivalries, intrigues, and assassinations of the Cold War. Haunted by the memories of the carnage and mass incarceration carried out by the British colonial-settler state in his native Kenya but inspired by the titanic struggle against it, Ngũgĩ, then known as James Ngugi, begins to weave stories from the fibers of memory, history, and a shockingly vibrant and turbulent present. What unfolds in this moving and thought-provoking memoir is simultaneously the birth of one of the most important living writers—lauded for his “epic imagination” (Los Angeles Times)—the death of one of the most violent episodes in global history, and the emergence of new histories and nations with uncertain futures.
