Book The Weathering of Coal Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Weathering of Coal Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by S. W. Parr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Weathering of Coal, Vol. 4 The Engineering Experiment Station was established by action of the Board of Trustees December 8, 1903. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering, and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to the manufacturing, railway, mining, constructional and industrial interests of the state. The control of the Engineering Experiment Station is vested in the heads of the several departments of the College of Engineering. These constitute the Station Staff, and with the Director determine the character of the investigations to be undertaken. The work is carried on under the supervision of the Staff; sometimes by a Research Fellow as graduate work, sometimes by a member of the instructional force of the College of Engineering, but more frequently by an investigator belonging to the Station corps. The results of these investigations will be published in the form of bulletins, and will record mostly the experiments of the Stations own staff of investigators. There will also be issued from time to time in the form of circulars, compilations giving the results of the experiments of engineers, industrial works, technical institutions and governmental testing departments. The volume and number at the top of the title page of the cover are merely arbitrary numbers and refer to the general publications of the University of Illinois; above the title is given the number of the Engineering Experiment Station bulletin or circular, which should be used in referring to these publications. For copies of bulletins, circulars or other information, address the Engineering Experiment Station, Urbana, Illinois. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Weathering of Coal The bituminous coal producers have a more uniform demand throughout the year for all sizes and grades of their product than the anthracite producers can expect. Large power plants, naval coaling stations and railroads are the principal interests storing bituminous coal, except around the great lakes. At nearly all the cities at the head of lakes, the coal companies themselves store great quantities of coal during the season of navigation. Part of this coal is for local consumption, but a larger part of it is for reshipment by rail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Weathering of Coal For many reasons, present conditions often necessitate the storing of large quantities of coal. On account of the seasonable demand for fuel for'domestic purposes, mining interests find it to their advantage to store coal during the otherwise dull season and.thus maintain a uniformity in working conditions at the mines, which is in accordance with the principles of economic production, as well as prevent poor conditions and dissatisfaction among the miners. This fluctuatihgidemand'lihewise affects the coal dealer Who must have a supply of coal'on hand to supply the market. Manufacturers are beginning to see the need of supplying themselves with fuel in case their'supply be cut off by some unforeseen condition at the mines or in transportation companies. The Railway interests who? According to the Interstate Commerce Commission, used over one-fourth of the coal supply of the United States in 1905t'look out for their own coal supply even at the expense of other industries and are thus constantly prepared to continue their business should any contingency at the mines result in a temporary cutting off of their coal supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Combustion of Coals and the Prevention of Smoke, Chemically and Practically Considered, Vol. 1 IT may be asked, why I should have undertaken to write a treatise on a branch Of chemistry; or why suppose I could say any thing on the subject of combustion which had not been better said already by many competent chemical professors. The reply to the latter question must be sought in the following pages. My reply to the former is the following short statement of facts, which, I trust, will exonerate me from presumption, on the one hand, or any uncalled for interference, on the other. Book The Treasures of Coal Tar Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Treasures of Coal Tar Classic Reprint written by Alexander Findlay and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treasures of Coal Tar In order that the effort now being made to promote the more widespread application of science, and more especially to render this country independent of others for the supply of the dyes necessary for the maintenance of om textile industry, shall not be relaxed, it is essential that the people as a whole should interest themselves in the work, and should gain some knowledge of what has been achieved in the past, and some understanding of the nature and complexity of the problems to be solved. As the matter is urgent, and of vital importance for the welfare of this country, the writer felt that, even in a time of much preoccupation, he could not refuse the invitation of the publishers to discuss in a readily intelligible manner the production and utilisation of coal tar, and to indicate, sufffiently fully for the general reader, the almost infinite variety of materials dyes, drug, perfumes, explosives for the manufacture of which coal tar is the raw material. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Combustion of Coal and the Prevention of Smoke In the proper place I will shew, that, of late years, as much uncertainty as to the success of a new boiler has prevailed as when I first began operations, thirty years ago; and that few boilers, for land or marine engines, exhibit more in the way of effecting perfect combustion or economy of fuel than those of any former period since the days of Watt. I here observe, that I do not affect to give any new view of the nature of combustion, much less do I make any claim to discovery. What I take credit for is, the practical application, on the large scale of thefumace, of those chemical truths which are so well known in every laboratory. I also take credit for bringing together the scattered facts and illustrations of such authorities as bear on the subj ect before us, and so applying them as to enable practical men to understand that part which chemistry has to act in the construction, arrangements, and working of our boilers and furnaces. Download or read book Foundations of Paleoecology written by S. Kathleen Lyons and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 99% of all life that has ever existed is extinct. Fortunately, these long dead species have left traces of their lives and interactions with other species in the rock record that paleoecologists use to understand how species and ecosystems have changed over time. This record of past life allows us to study the dynamic nature of the Earth and gives context to current and future ecological challenges. This book brings together forty-four classic papers published between 1924 and 1999 that trace the origins and development of paleoecology. The articles cross taxonomic groups, habitat types, geographic areas, and time and have made substantial contributions to our knowledge of the evolution of life. Encompassing the full breadth of paleoecology, the book is divided into six parts: community and ecosystem dynamics, community reconstruction, diversity dynamics, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, species interaction, and taphonomy. Each paper is also introduced by a contemporary expert who gives context and explains its importance to ongoing paleoecological research. A comprehensive introduction to the field, Foundations of Paleoecology will be an essential reference for new students and established paleoecologists alike.
