Kenneth Chinran was a disaffected youth who joined the military and was recruited for an elite deep cover unit, surviving training and exercises so tough that several of the recruits did not survive. At the peak of his career, he was sent by his star nation to infiltrate a fascistic, militaristic planet--Earth. He lived in deep cover for years, marrying and having a daughter. Then the Earth forces attacked his home system, and he and his team came out of hiding, attacking and destroying the infrastructure of the crowded planet, disabling transportation and communications and creating terror in city after city. As a result of his attacks, billions died for lack of the food, water and power which the ravaged system could no longer supply. His sabotage was successful, but the deaths of so many weighed heavily on his mind, making him wonder if he was still sane. Then the secret police discovered his identity. With his daughter, the only thing in his life that had so far kept him human, he was on the run, while the resources of a planetwide police state were tracking him down. He could see no way to escape from the planet, no way to keep hiding, and if he and his daughter were caught, death was the very least that they could expect. But Chinran is a warrior in his soul, and even if he loses this last battle, he won't go down without a fight that his pursuers--the ones who survive--will never forget. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unthinkable has happened -- again. A terrorist strike on a major New York City landmark leaves behind an aftermath of death and destruction. Caught at ground zero is NYPD detective Jack Keller who barely escapes with his life. His longtime friend and former partner is not as lucky. Keller vows to bring the terrorist mastermind behind the strike to justice. He tracks him down in a global manhunt. Yet unknown to Keller time is running out. His quarry is gearing up for the boldest terrorist attack in history. Iran has given terrorists a theater nuclear missile in a bid to out-do the death toll on 911. If successful the doomsday plan will unleash a nuclear nightmare on millions of victims and set the stage for worse to come. In the end everything hinges on a hard-as-nails New York police detective who stakes his life in a global chase after the terrorist chieftain he's determined to bring to justice no matter what or who he has to sacrifice in order to do it. The action scenes in Paris and Venice are gripping and move faster than greased lightning, giving the impression that Alexander knows every back street, hidden ally and public square, every public monument and off-the-beaten-path corner of these European cities, and also knows just which elements to use in his masterfully conceived and boldly executed plot. The dark narrative tapestry of Chain Reaction also places this thriller squarely amid the select ranks of classic hardboiled fiction. This is a contemporary thriller, though, and one in which Alexander manages to mix successfully an intricate plot with exotic locales, a considerable amount of action, and solid characters. Chain reaction is a thriller fan's dream; exciting, involving, thought-provoking. All in all, a first-class tale of intrigue by one of the top authors in the field.

Book A Strange and Formidable Weapon

Download or read book A Strange and Formidable Weapon written by Marion Girard and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of poison gas in World War I shocked Britons at all levels of society, yet by the end of the conflict their nation was a leader in chemical warfare. Although never used on the home front, poison gas affected almost every segment of British society physically, mentally, or emotionally, proving to be an armament of total war. Through cartoons, military records, novels, treaties, and other sources, Marion Girard examines the varied ways different sectors of British society viewed chemical warfare, from the industrialists who promoted their toxic weapons while maintaining private control of production,øto the politicians who used gas while balancing the need for victory with the risk of developing a reputation for barbarity. Although most Britons considered gas a vile weapon and a symptom of the enemy?s inhumanity, many eventually condoned its use. ø The public debates about the future of gas extended to the interwar years, and evidence reveals that the taboo against poison gas was far from inevitable. A Strange and Formidable Weapon uncovers the complicated history of this weapon of total war and illustrates the widening involvement of society in warfare.

Book A History of Chemical and Biological Weapons

Download or read book A History of Chemical and Biological Weapons written by Edward M. Spiers and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the 9/11 attacks and the anthrax letters that appeared in their wake, the threat posed by the widespread accessibility of chemical and biological weapons has continually been used to stir public fear and opinion by politicians and the media alike. In Chemical and Biological Weapons, Edward M. Spiers cuts through the scare tactics and hype to provide a thorough and even-handed examination of the weapons themselves—the various types and effects—and their evolution from World War I to the present. Spiers describes the similarities and differences between the two types of weapons and how technological advancements have led to tactical innovations in their use over time. As well, he gives equal attention to the international response to the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons, analyzing global efforts aimed at restraining their use, such as deterrence and disarmament, and the effectiveness of these approaches in the twentieth century. Using Iraq as a case study, Spiers also investigates its deployment of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq War and the attempts by the international community to disarm Iraq through the United Nations Special Commission and the United States-led war in 2003. A timely and balanced historical survey, Chemical and Biological Weapons will be of interest to readers studying the proliferation and use of chemical and biological warfare and the reactions of the international community throughout the last several decades.
