Book Wealth Whiteness and the Matrix of Privilege

Download or read book Wealth Whiteness and the Matrix of Privilege written by Jessica Holden Sherwood and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exclusive social clubs are traditionally an important site for the consolidation of upper-class power. Wealth, Whiteness, and the Matrix of Privilege shows that while the particulars of admission have changed, these clubs remain socially significant incubators. Having interviewed typically inaccessible members of exclusive clubs in the Northeast, Jessica Holden Sherwood reports and analyzes what they have to say about who is in, who is out, and why. The members talk frankly about their exclusiveness based on money and style, but they are quick to point out that ethnically-based exclusion is a thing of the past. Club members also address the status of their women members, which is at times distinctly second-class. The talk of country club members is shown to draw on elements in popular discourse. And even if it's not their intention, as club members exclude and account for their exclusion, they contribute to reproducing class, race, and gender inequalities.

Book Wealth Creation

  • Author : Shanna E. Ratner
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-11-06
  • ISBN : 1000750868
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Wealth Creation written by Shanna E. Ratner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to rural development is emerging. Instead of being about attracting companies that might create jobs over which communities have no control, the emerging paradigm is about connecting the unique underutilized assets of place with market opportunity to grow assets that are owned and controlled by and for the benefit of low-wealth people and places. But asset development is about more than bricks and mortar or narrowly defined financial assets. There are many kinds of assets that communities require to thrive – such as social capital, natural capital, political capital, and intellectual capital. The emerging new approach to rural development is, then about broadening the definition of "wealth," engaging underutilized assets, and a key third element: harnessing the power of the market – rather than relying solely on philanthropy and government. Wealth Creation provides a conceptual guide with practical examples for policymakers, practitioners of economic and community development, community organizers, environmentalists, funders, investors, and corporations seeking a values-based framework for identifying self-interests across sectors that can lead to opportunities to transform existing systems for the collective good.

Book Rural Wealth Creation

Download or read book Rural Wealth Creation written by John L. Pender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of wealth in achieving sustainable rural economic development. The authors define wealth as all assets net of liabilities that can contribute to well-being, and they provide examples of many forms of capital – physical, financial, human, natural, social, and others. They propose a conceptual framework for rural wealth creation that considers how multiple forms of wealth provide opportunities for rural development, and how development strategies affect the dynamics of wealth. They also provide a new accounting framework for measuring wealth stocks and flows. These conceptual frameworks are employed in case study chapters on measuring rural wealth and on rural wealth creation strategies. Rural Wealth Creation makes numerous contributions to research on sustainable rural development. Important distinctions are drawn to help guide wealth measurement, such as the difference between the wealth located within a region and the wealth owned by residents of a region, and privately owned versus publicly owned wealth. Case study chapters illustrate these distinctions and demonstrate how different forms of wealth can be measured. Several key hypotheses are proposed about the process of rural wealth creation, and these are investigated by case study chapters assessing common rural development strategies, such as promoting rural energy industries and amenity-based development. Based on these case studies, a typology of rural wealth creation strategies is proposed and an approach to mapping the potential of such strategies in different contexts is demonstrated. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policy makers looking at rural community development, sustainable economic development, and wealth measurement.

Book The Code of Capital

Download or read book The Code of Capital written by Katharina Pistor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else. In this revealing book, Katharina Pistor argues that the law selectively "codes" certain assets, endowing them with the capacity to protect and produce private wealth. With the right legal coding, any object, claim, or idea can be turned into capital - and lawyers are the keepers of the code. Pistor describes how they pick and choose among different legal systems and legal devices for the ones that best serve their clients' needs, and how techniques that were first perfected centuries ago to code landholdings as capital are being used today to code stocks, bonds, ideas, and even expectations--assets that exist only in law. A powerful new way of thinking about one of the most pernicious problems of our time, The Code of Capital explores the different ways that debt, complex financial products, and other assets are coded to give financial advantage to their holders. This provocative book paints a troubling portrait of the pervasive global nature of the code, the people who shape it, and the governments that enforce it."--Provided by publisher.

Book The Value Matrix Approach Creating Wealth and Success by Reaching Your Personal and Business Goals

Download or read book The Value Matrix Approach Creating Wealth and Success by Reaching Your Personal and Business Goals written by Steven Brown and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is value? Business markets are undergoing an evolution similar to that of the industrial revolution, but in this case, it's the electronic commerce revolution and its ability to offer value. You've undoubtedly heard the term, but like most business people, you may be hard pressed to come up with a clear definition of value. By value, do we mean savings, benefits, quality, convenience, etc? To further complicate matters is trying to determine what it means for your customers. An important point to consider is whose definition would you accept, yours, a consumer, a visitor, a business partner, an employee? The beauty of using the Value Matrix Approach is that you will be able to uncover what all of them think, and act accordingly. Looking towards the future it can be seen that in order to compete in electronic commerce, or for that matter any business, value must be delivered. However, value must not be delivered in the eyes of the organization but rather in the eyes of the customer.

Readers will not only learn about the “Bermuda Triangle of Manifesting” that too often leads to heartbreak and loss, they’ll learn how to navigate around it, under full sail, with their own new “a-ha” moments that will teach them: • How to achieve clarity in purpose and desire and thereby avoid contradictions and self-sabotage • How to fuel their dreams with passion while not attaching to unimportant details and outcomes • How to plan and take action on their dreams without “messing with the cursed how’s”! And so much more...
