Book The Wanton Jesuit and the Wayward Saint

Download or read book The Wanton Jesuit and the Wayward Saint written by Mita Choudhury and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This microhistory investigates the famous and scandalous 1731 trial in which Catherine Cadière, a young woman in the south of France, accused her Jesuit confessor, Jean-Baptiste Girard, of seduction, heresy, abortion, and bewitchment. Generally considered to be the last witchcraft trial in early modern France, the Cadière affair was central to the volatile politics of 1730s France, a time when magistrates and lawyers were seeking to contain clerical power. Mita Choudhury’s examination of the trial sheds light on two important phenomena with broad historical implications: the questioning of traditional authority and the growing disquiet about the role of the sacred and divine in French society. Both contributed to the French people’s ever-increasing disenchantment with the church and the king. Choudhury builds her story through an extensive examination of archival material, including trial records, pamphlets, periodicals, and unpublished correspondence from witnesses. The Wanton Jesuit and the Wayward Saint offers new insights into how the eighteenth-century public interpreted the accusations and why the case consumed the public for years, developing from a local sex scandal to a referendum on religious authority and its place in French society and politics.

  • Pages : 453 pages

Download or read book The Wayward Son written by Howard George and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an old man reflects on his life, this richly detailed historical novel goes back before his birth to the flight of the royal court from Naples to Palermo in December 1798 on the ships of Admiral Lord Nelson's depleted squadron. The Wayward Son: A story of Nelson and Emma Hamilton's secret son tells a side story about the relationship of Thomas Spencer, the admiral's steward, with Mary Hever, then a servant in the household of Sir John Acton. In time and setting this relationship parallels that of Lord Nelson and Emma Lady Hamilton, but in no other respect. For while the titled lovers can only indulge their relationship by concealment and subterfuge that fails to fool too many, Thomas pursues Mary with a view toward marriage. At the same time, Nelson and Emma plan to conceal the pregnancy that Emma failed to abort. Mary transfers into the joint household of Lord Nelson and Sir William and Lady Hamilton in Palermo shortly before Mary's marriage to Thomas in 1799. At the same time, Nelson's fleet is attempting to recover southern Italy's mainland without the French and Spanish navies interfering. Lord Nelson arranges for Lady Hamilton to give birth on a transport ship as she tries to hide the true parentage of her child. And in the background, there lurks an old French enemy by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte. About the Author: Raised in South East Derbyshire, England, Howard George now resides in Llangollen, North Wales. He is working on his next historical novel. Book Rome and the African Church in the Time of Augustine

Download or read book Rome and the African Church in the Time of Augustine written by J. E. Merdinger and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book examines the vibrant North African Christian Church of the 4th and 5th centuries and its relationship to Rome. Merdinger provides a lively account of cases of canon law that arose in Africa but were adjudicated in Rome-including the notorious Apiarius affair-and shows how African Christians gradually became dependent on the papacy for enforcement of church discipline. A tour de force. Engagingly readable, full of lively details, it provides both an accessible introduction to the development of papal and episcopal authority in the West and a challenging new reading of the evidence for the initiated scholar. Merdinger's use of the recently published 'Divjak letters' of St. Augustine to re-interpret the relations of the Roman and North African Churches in the early fifth century is particularly exciting. Clearly this is the fullest and most sophisticated treatment available in English of a crucial period in the growth of Church life and structures.-Brian E. Daley, S. J., University of Notre Dame Merdinger's book achieves the seemingly impossible task of making the subject not only of wide general interest but actually a gripping read: the excitement of the cases which illustrate her central thesis often read like a very good historical novel...Her gift for telling a good story holds together a complicated and often protracted plot in an engaging way: characters breathe, emotions are stirred, circumstantial details beguile, complexity lends richness rather than confusion. This is history at its best.-Carol Harrison, Church Time

Mark Stern - Psychoanalyst Professor Emeritus of Psychology - Iona College "An honest and provocative book which challenges contemporary political correctness...well worth reading." - Bishop Thomas V.Dailey Retired Bishop of Brooklyn, New York and West Palm Beach, Florida This book is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences. Father James Lloyd has been a New York state licensed psychologist for 30 years with a PhD in psychology from NYU. He likes to say "I am half Russian Jew and half Irish but ALL Catholic. My parents were Vaudevillians and I was a classic 'dirty neck kid' from San Juan Hill in West Side Manhattan." As an adult, Lloyd spent time as a missionary in southern Africa, taught theology, was the rector of a seminary, and hosted an interview show on WNBC for 15 years. On his show, he interviewed a tremendous variety of celebrities, including Bill Buckley Jr., Mother Teresa, David Susskind and Jackie Gleason. He worked with divorced and separated Catholics, with widows and widowers. He preached missions in parishes, gave retreats to clergy, taught psychology on the undergraduate level and was the Director of the Graduate Division of Pastoral Counseling at Iona College for 20 years. Since retirement, he runs a weekly group for the Archdiocese of New York to help males who seek inner chastity in the face of their strong same sex attractions. He has seen miracles of God's grace in all aspects of life. This book presents a series of convictions about life and its meaning through the eyes of what he has seen of life. Each writing articulates his beliefs and a deeply personal view of the world as it stands today.

Here is the truth about the scores of abusive priests who preyed upon innocent children and the cabal of senior Church officials who covered up their crimes. Book Screen Priests

  • ISBN : 1925872920
  • Pages : 718 pages

Download or read book Screen Priests written by Peter Malone and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is never a shortage of priest characters on our screens. Even Spencer Tracy, Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald won Oscars for playing priests. Robert de Niro has been ordained four times (including a bishop). Many stars have been eager to play priests, as have numerous supporting actors. The question arises: how have been priests portrayed over the decades? There have been kindly priests with their advice, stern priests who laid down the law, heroic priests on mission, in more recent years, priests who have been abusers. And there have been priests who were part of the scenery, especially at funerals. This is something of a comprehensive look at priests on screen, looking at portrayals from the late 19th century, over the decades, for 120 years. The films considered are mainly English-language but quite there are a number from other cultures. The book offers some Church background and developments, the range of films, a highlighting of a key film representing each decade. It also has separate chapters on Irish priests, Australian priests, exorcism priests and a chapter on films and abuse. There also Appendices on historical films, saint priests and popes. While one could read the book from cover to cover, it is mainly a book for reference. There are some detailed appreciations. There are some shorter considerations. Not everyone can see every film, not for want of trying! There are Indexes for exploring: film titles, directors, and actors who have played priests. Screen Priests is a fascinating historical look at films about Roman Catholic priests from the first until Martin Scorseses 2016 religious and cinematic masterpiece Silence. With the scope spanning decades and the breadth embracing films mostly from the United States, Britain, Ireland, Canada and Australia, the researcher will find a treasure trove and the film aficionado will relish Peter Malones encyclopedia knowledge and sometimes trivia of the world of priests on the silver screen.

Book Tales from Portlaw Volume Two The Priest s Calling Card

Download or read book Tales from Portlaw Volume Two The Priest s Calling Card written by William Forde and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-07-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up on my mothers stories. Although an Irish woman of small stature and imaginative mind, stories didnt come any taller than those tales told by my mother. They would stretch the bounds of ones credulity beyond the realms of possibility, and yet, she always made me want to believe them. Having been persuaded to return to writing, I decided to recount some of the stories told to me by my mother long ago. Being a person with my own imagination, I have taken the germ of her tale and elaborated it with the aid of 70 years of wisdom and a splash of literary licence to come up with the final result. The Priests Calling Card is about a Portlaw Priest who leaves his walking stick outside any house he visits as a sign of his presence there and with the clear understanding he is never to be interrupted during his home visits by any other callers to the house where he is.

Book Why Celibacy Reclaiming the Fatherhood of the Priest

Download or read book Why Celibacy Reclaiming the Fatherhood of the Priest written by Fr. Carter Griffin and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Church today demands a profound renewal of celibate priesthood and the fatherhood to which it is ordered.” Priestly celibacy, some say, is an outdated relic from another age. Others see it as a lonely way of life. But as Fr. Carter Griffin argues in Why Celibacy?: Reclaiming the Fatherhood of the Priest, the ancient practice of celibacy, when lived well, helps a priest exercise his spiritual fatherhood joyfully and fruitfully. Along the way, Griffin explores: the question of optional celibacy some pitfalls of celibate paternity the selection and formation of candidates for celibate priesthood why biological fathers are also called to spiritual fatherhood the powerful impact of celibacy on the Church and the wider culture In a critical moment for the Catholic priesthood, Fr. Griffin brings light and hope with a new perspective on the Church’s perennial wisdom on celibacy.
