Book excerpt: Wealthy playwright Sir Jermyn Annerley finds himself caught up in a love-triangle between the beautiful actress Sybil Cluley and his rival for her love, Lord Lakenham. Secrets from their pasts all start to surface however, and a dramatic turn of events results in a shocking murder. Who is responsible? Is there still a chance for true love to blossom? An intriguing dark romance from prolific author E. Phillips Oppenheim. E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946) was a hugely prolific and highly popular British author of novels and short stories. Born in Tottenham, London, Oppenheim left school as a teenager and worked for his leather-merchant father for 20 years prior to launching his literary career. Oppenheim published five novels under the pseudonym ‘Anthony Partridge’ before establishing his reputation as a writer under his own name. An internationally successful author, Oppenheim’s stories revolved mainly around glamourous characters, luxurious settings, and themes of espionage, suspense, and crime. He is widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of the thriller and spy-fiction genre as it is recognised today. Oppenheim’s incredible literary success meant that his own life soon began to mirror that of his opulent characters. He held lavish, Gatsby-style parties at his French Villa and was rumoured to have had frequent love affairs aboard his luxury yacht. Oppenheim’s success earned him the cover of Time magazine in 1927. Some of his most well-known novels include ‘The Great Impersonation’, ‘The Long Arm of Mannister’ and ‘The Moving Finger’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book Some Women s Ways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Women s Ways Classic Reprint written by Mary Angela Dickens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Women's Ways It was a strong, full voice that uttered these words as the door Opened; musical, in spite of a certain hardness about its careless tones; and it harmonized curiously with the appear ance of the woman to whom it belonged. She was a woman in whom the evanescent charm of girlhood, with its inexperiences, ignorances, and assumptions, had passed into a maturity which was just entering upon its most perfect stage. She was tall, well-propor tioned, graceful with the unconscious ease of absolute self-possession, in spite of certain little brusqueries of manner. Her features were excellent; but no one on first meeting Bride Heseltine ever thought of her as handsome. Exactly what constituted her charm her friends would have been puzzled to say. They might have declared that she was brilliant, eccentric, kind-hearted, a good talker, a good listener, or what not, each according to his or her indi vidual fancy; and none of their statements would have accurately represented the fact. She sat down at the tea table now, and drew off her gloves with deft, vigorous movements. She was dressed with the same perfection of fashionable detail as was her visitor; but an unconscious emanation of originality blended her very clothes into a characteristic whole. Download or read book The Ways of Woman Classic Reprint written by Ida M. Tarbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ways of Woman The little essays gathered in this volume are an attempt to interpret informally certain activities and responsibilities of the average normal woman. It is not surprising that in an age intoxicated as ours is by changes in its outward habits and conduct, there should come a certain contempt for the great slow currents with which mankind has moved since the world began. The old currents are lost we say in electrified, self-directing eddies, pools, streams. We have a new world of machines and systems - the world of Kultur. But this is to study only the surface. The few great currents of life persist as do the tides of the oceans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Hill Women

Download or read book Hill Women written by Cassie Chambers and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After rising from poverty to earn two Ivy League degrees, an Appalachian lawyer pays tribute to the strong “hill women” who raised and inspired her, and whose values have the potential to rejuvenate a struggling region. “Destined to be compared to Hillbilly Elegy and Educated.”—BookPage (starred review) “A gritty, warm love letter to Appalachian communities and the resourceful women who lead them.”—Slate Nestled in the Appalachian mountains, Owsley County, Kentucky, is one of the poorest places in the country. Buildings are crumbling as tobacco farming and coal mining decline. But strong women find creative ways to subsist in the hills. Through the women who raised her, Cassie Chambers traces her path out of and back into the Kentucky mountains. Chambers’s Granny was a child bride who rose before dawn every morning to raise seven children. Granny’s daughter, Ruth—the hardest-working tobacco farmer in the county—stayed on the family farm, while Wilma—the sixth child—became the first in the family to graduate from high school. Married at nineteen and pregnant with Cassie a few months later, Wilma beat the odds to finish college. She raised her daughter to think she could move mountains, like the ones that kept her safe but also isolated from the larger world. Cassie would spend much of her childhood with Granny and Ruth in the hills of Owsley County. With her “hill women” values guiding her, she went on to graduate from Harvard Law. But while the Ivy League gave her opportunities, its privileged world felt far from her reality, and she moved home to help rural Kentucky women by providing free legal services. Appalachian women face issues from domestic violence to the opioid crisis, but they are also keeping their towns together in the face of a system that continually fails them. With nuance and heart, Chambers breaks down the myth of the hillbilly and illuminates a region whose poor communities, especially women, can lead it into the future.

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Fight for the Vote As a chronicler of a campaign which is still in progress I labour under a certain disadvantage as to tenses. The "may be" of to-day becomes the "was" or the "might have been" of to-morrow. Even while the ink is still wet in the printing press events are happening which are deciding whether a new chapter of militancy is to be written or whether the book should have the orthodox ending - "and they all lived happily ever after." Those who read this book a year, a month, or even a day, after it is published are asked to bear this salient fact in mind.
