The debut productions of all five plays in the series were presented by Crystal Field, executive director, at Theater for the New City in New York City. Black launched the Gunplays series in 2013 with “Welcome Home Sonny T,” a drama that spotlighted two significant forces driving the 21st century epidemic of American gun violence: the social impact of alienation and unemployment on young black males and the declining influence of black ministers as a force of stability in affected neighborhoods. The second play in the series, “When Black Boys Die” (2015), is a family drama in which a teenage girl tries to understand the madness of gun violence that has killed her brother and consumed her mother. The third, presented by Theater for the New City for 2016 Gun Awareness Month, is “Death of a Black Man (A Walk By),” a play with hip hop verse, chanting, songs, and poetry in which the audience moves through a neighborhood that experienced gun violence. The fourth, “The Faculty Room” (2017), is a drama that swallows its audience into a schoolhouse in a mandatory lock down because of an imminent gunfight between two students. The final play, “Subway Story (A Shooting)” (2018) combines music, poetry, dialogue, movement, and immersive theater in a way that makes it the most unique staging in the series as a teenage girl rides the subway looking to buy a gun as a means to deal with her abusive mother.

My ultimate aim had been to become a writer and to make my life be different from what it had been. It was by acknowledging and accepting that freedom as a way of being that possibilities for doing so and to go beyond what I could not have dreamed about became such a significant aspect of my life. I could not see why the goal of becoming a writer or doing anything else that I choose to do could not be made to happen. I knew that health and fitness had to become a necessity. The perspective of having a clear mind and to exist beyond the concerns and matters of the external world and the everydayness of life had not been that much of a challenge. It is by being in this situation of freedom and with possibilities arising from every corner that I can now go back to that being of self that I have been made to be to try to understand what it really means to be me. In a way, living with freedom and possibility has allowed me to look at the different dimensions of my being and at the lived realities of my life, and to investigate further into whatever way there may be to take my being to the limit of what is possible for me. This book is an attempt to look at the question of what it means to be that has come out from that direct experience of the way that I have experienced it to be. It is in no way meant to be a prescription for life.

In European urban sociology, research has mostly focused either on lower class ethnic minorities, or on white ethnic majority middle classes. By contrast, studies on upwardly mobile ethnic minorities are scarce, a gap that this book fills by looking at upwardly mobile Turkish-Germans living in Berlin. Those Turkish-Germans in Berlin, who decide to move out of a low status neighbourhood, mostly in order to find a better educational infrastructure for their children, show various strategies to keep ties back to their old neighbourhood. Moreover, the movers now living in neighbourhoods with a high share of native-German residents, where they stand out as the other, keep ties to other people with a Turkish background, not only through socializing with co-ethnics, but also through various forms of voluntary involvement. Hence, a move presents a spatial withdrawal from a socioeconomically weak and ethnically diverse neighbourhood, but it does not imply that this neighbourhood no longer plays a role in Turkish-Germans’ daily practices or as somewhere with which to continuously identify. Barwick’s sophisticated study shows that moving and staying are both active decisions and they both have positive and negative consequences. Thus, movers and stayers alike develop coping strategies for their respective situation, and develop particular daily practices and forms of identification with place.
