Book Wristwatch Handbook The

Download or read book Wristwatch Handbook The written by R. Schmidt and published by Antique Collector's Club. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Wristwatch Handbook' provides the reader with a comprehensive anatomy of the mechanical wristwatch; every conceivable function and form. It is the foundational text for the novice and the reference book for the seasoned enthusiast. Where other books about watches focus on advising the collector, on a single brand, or on a timeline of key historical figures and events, 'The Wristwatch Handbook' takes a detailed look at mechanical wristwatch complications (functions) and leaves no stone unturned. The reader will gain the ability to identify a complicated watch from twenty paces and perform a top-to-bottom assessment of even the most exotic timepiece in a matter of seconds. Despite the functional obsolescence of the mechanical wristwatch (our phones, computers, even microwaves tell more accurate time), there are more varieties of mechanical watches available than ever before. Today, innovation is no longer exclusively preoccupied with accuracy; pioneer manufacturers are also exploring friction reduction, anti-magnetism, scratch resistance, dial decoration, exotic materials and so on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable, practical book is written by a watch repairer with over twenty years' experience. He covers the essential requirements of a workspace, discusses basic tools, and how to use and care for them and illustrates how to take a mechanical watch apart and re-assemble it. He goes on to examine types of watch cases, case backs and how to open and re-fit them, as well as the movement and removing the movement from the case. He demonstrates how to remove the hands and the dial, and discusses motion work and the removal of the cannon pinion. He also pays attention to keyless-work, the mainspring and the barrel, the balance wheel, the escapement, the gearing and the gear train, pivots and arbors, bearings and jewels, and much more. The book also shows the reader how to service, clean and oil a watch, and how to successfully complete common repairs and make basic adjustments. OX VARIOUS SCALES.' * Compiled from data given in " A few facts connected with the Elements of Watch and Clock Making." By C. Frodsham. (1862.) SIZES OF MOVEMENTS. 463 Explanation of the above table.--The measurements are taken across the pillar plate. With a view to facilitate reference, the series of sizes on the French line scale are taken as a basis, as it covers the widest range, and only those sizes on the Lancashire scale that correspond to this series are given; the figures that indicate sizes on these two scales being printed in somewhat heavier type. When only a single Lancashire size is mentioned opposite to a line size it is to be understood that the two very nearly correspond, and if two numbers are given on the former scale opposite to one on the latter, it means that the French size is intermediate between the two on the English scale. Thus the line size 18 is almost identical with the Lancashire size 13, and their exact difference can be ascertained from columns 2 and 5 of the table. On the other hand, the French size 20 is intermediate between the English sizes 18 and 19, and the error that would be made by adopting either number as an equivalent can be at once determined by comparing the respective values in inches. In a similar manner the third column, giving sizes on the millimetre scale, can be used in conjunction with column 1 or 4; indeed, the table affords a means of approximately ascertaining the size of a movement on any one scale when it is known on any other. The rule for determining the value in inches of any size on the Lancashire scale is as follows: --Taking an initial inch, add to it 5-30ths of an inch (an allowance for the "fall," or room to enable the movement to open and shut in the case), and the...
