Book excerpt: Washington County, Georgia was formed in 1784 by the Georgia Legislature, and the county seat, Sandersville, began at the crossing of two Indian trails. Over the course of its long and storied history, the county has seen a prosperous agricultural period when "cotton was king," a decline in profitable farming that stunted the county's growth and economy, and a resurgence in productivity and a boost to the local economy with the mining of kaolin. Today, there are six processing plants and numerous mines attracting scientists and geologists from many countries. Washington Countians continue to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a rural lifestyle while looking ahead to a promising future.

Download or read book Abandoned Tracks written by W. Thomas Mainwaring and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Abandoned Tracks, W. Thomas Mainwaring bridges the gap between scholarly and popular perceptions of the Underground Railroad. Historians have long recognized that many aspects of the Underground Railroad have been mythologized by emotion, memory, time, and wishful thinking. Mainwaring’s book is a rich, in-depth attempt to separate fact from fiction in one local area, while also contributing to a scholarly discussion of the Underground Railroad by placing Washington County, Pennsylvania, in the national context. Just as the North was not consistent in its perspective on the Civil War and the slavery issue, the Underground Railroad had distinct regional variations. Washington County had a well-organized abolition movement, even though its members helped a comparatively small number of fugitive slaves escape, largely because of the small nearby slave population in what was then western Virginia. Its origins as a slave county make it an interesting case study of the transition from slavery to freedom and of the origins of black and white abolitionism. Abandoned Tracks lends much to the ongoing scholarly debate about the extent, scope, and nature of the Underground Railroad. This book is written both for scholars of abolitionism and the Underground Railroad and for an audience interested in local history.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Washington County written by Donna Akers Warmuth and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in southwestern Virginia, Washington County is a land of fertile grounds and rolling hills along the Holston River. Hardy pioneers settled this land in the mid- to late-1700s and tamed the wilderness to establish communities, churches, and schools. Officially formed in 1776, the county was named after Gen. George Washington for his fame and accomplishments before he became president. From the tribes of its original inhabitants to the introduction of the great railways and commerce, Washington County was a major gateway to the West along the Great Wagon Road and saw thousands of settlers and goods pass through on the way to the uncharted lands of the United States. With over 200 images, Washington County provides an intricate visit to the yesteryear of this rural region with scenes of the Virginia Creeper trains and railroads and the larger communities of Damascus, Meadowview, and Glade Spring, as well as early photographs of the smaller communities such as Benhams, Clinchburg, Mendota, and Hayter's Gap.
