Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and what we believe in. Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the Warrior Ethos? Where did it come from? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives? The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs and other warriors in other walks of life. The book examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness." It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band). Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian and Curtius--and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan.

Book Siva s Warriors

  • ISBN : 1400860903
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Siva s Warriors written by and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Download or read book God s Warriors written by David T. Peckham and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Christian church faced persecution from several different sources, primarily that of Judaistic sympathizers, such as Hellenistic Jews (Greek Jews) and the Roman Empire. This persecution gave rise to men and woman who would rather face death than deny Yahvahshua (whom we call Jesus). Many suffered excruciating death by burning, beheading, crucifixion, or as entertainment in the Roman Colosseum. There they were forced to fight trained and experienced gladiators or face starving wild animals. Few survived their first encounter. During this period of time, men, whose names have survived to this day, fearlessly preached and taught the Word of God, knowing at any moment they could be arrested for blasphemy against the emperor, the self-proclaimed god of Rome. Such a man was Polycarp. Little is known of Polycarp, however, that which is known spurs the imagination. More is recorded of his death than of his life. God’s Warriors is a story of Polycarp and Flavius, a young tribune in the Roman army whose first assignment is to squelch the riots allegedly perpetrated by Christians in Smyrna. His eventual contact with the Bishop of Smyrna changes his life to the extent that Rome places him on its list of traitors—a crime punishable by death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This on-the-ground labor history focuses on the bitterly contested labor conflict in the early 1990s at the A. E. Staley corn processing plant in Decatur, Illinois, where workers waged one of the most hard-fought struggles in recent labor history. Originally family-owned, A. E. Staley was bought out by the multinational conglomerate Tate & Lyle, which immediately launched a full-scale assault on its union workforce. Allied Industrial Workers Local 837 responded by educating and mobilizing its members, organizing strong support from the religious and black communities, building a national and international solidarity movement, and engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the plant gates. Drawing on seventy-five interviews, videotapes of every union meeting, and their own active involvement organizing with the Staley workers, Steven K. Ashby and C. J. Hawking bring the workers' voices to the fore and reveal their innovative tactics, such as work-to-rule and solidarity committees, that inform and strengthen today's labor movement.

Book Djinns Stars and Warriors

Download or read book Djinns Stars and Warriors written by Matthew Schaffer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains some of the finest examples of Mandinka oral tradtions ever published, both in English and the original Mandinka, along with a chapter of Mandinka Arabic script texts translated into English. As a complement to the author's ethnography of the Mandinka published in 1980/1987, this book presents legends about jihad leaders, witchcraft, local Islam, cosmology, the founding of villages, great leaders among women, notable social institutions and other significant people and places. The Pakao country of southern Senegal developed into a West African center of pilgrimage. This book reveals the linguistic richness of Mandinka as an African literature in its own right and contributes to broader Mande studies. Since Mandinka figured prominently in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, this book also lays a basis for future work by the author on a cultural legacy of Mandinka in the New World.
