Download or read book Girl Warriors written by Svenja Hohenstein and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quest narratives are as old as Western culture. In stories like The Odyssey, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Harry Potter, men set out on journeys, fight battles and become heroes. Women traditionally feature in such stories as damsels in need of rescue or as the prizes at the end of heroic quests. These narratives perpetuate predominant gender roles by casting men as active and women as passive. Focusing on stories in which popular teenage heroines--Buffy Summers, Katniss Everdeen and Disney's Princess Merida--embark on daring journeys, this book explores what happens when traditional gender roles and narrative patterns are subverted. The author examines representations of these characters across various media--film, television, novels, posters, merchandise, fan fiction and fan art, and online memes--that model concepts of heroism and girlhood inspired by feminist ideas.

Book Warriors of Phaeton Axis

Download or read book Warriors of Phaeton Axis written by Leora Gonzales and published by Leora Gonzales. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Phaeton’s master interrogator, Axis was often called upon to handle the most difficult missions. His natural ability to sniff out lies, plus his intense training, had never let him down. Until it did. Questioning his place amongst the brethren he’d failed, the Skrammon warrior has been living on the planet Euphoria in the Pleasure Sector trying to work through his mistakes. Although technically on leave, the Phaeton Council requested one small favor in exchange for the free time he’d been granted. Keep an eye out for anything unusual. Nova Rodriguez is more than a little unusual, and that’s not counting the fact that she’s a human imprisoned in a space brothel. The details on how she ended up in a whorehouse versus her original destination are more than a little murky, but one thing is completely clear: she needs to get the f$#% off this planet before Cruum, the gross alien master with a penchant for torture, sells her off to the highest bidder. With sheer determination, the help of a couple of sex kittens, and a list of rules to live by, Nova comes up with a plan: find a Phaeton—preferably the one she’d seen in the market and can’t stop thinking about—and convince him to help her. Not only does her life depend on it, so do the lives of the other two women Cruum has already sold. Trigger Warning: dark content, escape from trafficking

Book Culture Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films

Download or read book Culture Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films written by Carl Silvio and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released in May 1977, the original Star Wars movie inaugurated the age of the movie blockbuster. It also redefined the use of cinematic special effects, creating a new textual universe that now stretches through three decades, two trilogies and generations of fascinated viewers. The body of critical analysis that has developed from this epic focuses primarily on the Star Wars universe as a contemporary myth. However, like any fiction, it must also be viewed--and consequently analyzed--as a product of the culture which created it. The essays in this book analyze the Star Wars trilogies as a culturally and historically specific phenomenon. Moving away from the traditional myth-based criticism of the films, the essayists employ a cultural studies model to examine how this phenomenon intersects with social formations such as economics, technology, race and gender. Critical approaches are varied and include political and economic analysis informed by feminism, contemporary race theory, Marxism, new media studies and post-humanism. Among the topics covered are the connections between the trilogies and our own cultural landscape; the problematic issues of race and gender; and the thematic implications of Lucas' presentation of technology. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Kao Kalia Yang delivers an inspiring tale of resourceful children confronting adversaries in a refugee camp After lunch the Yang warriors prepare for battle. They practice drills, balance rocks on their heads, wield magical swords from fallen branches. Led by ten-year-old Master Me (whose name means “little”), the ten cousins are ready to defend the family at all costs. After a week without fresh vegetables , the warriors embark on a dangerous mission to look for food, leaving the camp’s boundaries, knowing their punishment would be severe if they were caught by the guards. In this inspiring picture book, fierce and determined children confront the hardships of Ban Vinai refugee camp, where the author lived as a child. Yang’s older sister, seven-year-old Dawb, was one of the story’s warriors, and her brave adventure unfolds here with all the suspense and excitement that held her five-year-old sister spellbound many years later. Accompanied by the evocative and rich cultural imagery of debut illustrator Billy Thao, the warriors’ secret mission shows what feats of compassion and courage children can perform, bringing more than foraged greens back to the younger children and to their elders. In this unforgiving place, with little to call their own, these children are the heroes, offering gifts of hope and belonging in a truly unforgettable way.
