This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of the Warren Anatomical Museum The Medical Department of Harvard University was established in the year 1782. In 1808 Dr. John C. Warren was appointed Adjunct Professor of Anatomy and Surgery; and, when that chair was vacated, in the year 1815, by the death of his father, Dr. W. was appointed to fill his-place. How faithfully and honorably to himself, and to the College, he performed the duties of his office, and during a long period of years, is well known to the profession. The zeal with which he pursued his favorite studies, and with which he improved the opportunities that a very extensive professional practice afforded him, led to the collection of a great number of pathological and other specimens; and, on resigning his professorship, in 1847, the greater part of this collection was presented to the College, and with it the sum of $6,000, for its preservation and increase. In acknowledgment of so valuable a donation, the Corporation of the University voted that the Museum should be called by the name of its founder. Unfortunately, Dr. W.'s time was so fully occupied by his professional practice, that but little was left to him for those records, or even references, upon which the value of the pathological portion of a museum so much depends. Before the transfer, however, was made to the College, Dr. W. had a record made of the specimens, from his dictation; but it was, for the most part, and excepting a few references, a mere enumeration. The tendency to preserve interesting specimens is very strong in so devoted an anatomist and surgeon as Dr. W. always had been; and the consequence was, that he collected a large number of what might essentially be called duplicates. Book Descriptive Catalogue of the Pathological Museum of the Pennsylvania Hospital

Download or read book Descriptive Catalogue of the Pathological Museum of the Pennsylvania Hospital written by William Pepper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Pathological Museum of the Pennsylvania Hospital: Mass. Medical College The value of these, and more especially of the drawings - which, indeed, compare favorably with any anatomical illustrations of the present day was very considerable, being estimated in the schedule of the stock of the Hospital at 350. Their practical value was also very great at the time, as they served as illustrations for courses. Of lectures on anatomy, delivered by Dr. Shippen in 1762 and 1763. Additions were made to the Museum from this time onward, but at so slow 9. Rate, that in the first catalogue, published in 1806, there are included but 161 preparations, in addition to the paintings and casts received from Dr. Fothergill. The great majority of these specimens were due to the skill and ingenuity of Dr. Chovet, whose wax models and injections were unrivalled at the time. The interest in the collection appears to have diminished after this, until in 1824 the Managers decided to remove it from the Hospital grounds, and accordingly gave to the Wistar and Homer Museum of the University of Pennsylvania all the specimens and preparations, with the exception of the paintings and casts donated by Dr. Fothergill, which were, however, loaned to the Trustees of the University and deposited in the same Museum. Book The Fate of Anatomical Collections

Download or read book The Fate of Anatomical Collections written by Rina Knoeff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every medical faculty possesses anatomical and/or pathological collections: human and animal preparations, wax- and other models, as well as drawings, photographs, documents and archives relating to them. In many institutions these collections are well-preserved, but in others they are poorly maintained and rendered inaccessible to medical and other audiences. This volume explores the changing status of anatomical collections from the early modern period to date. It is argued that anatomical and pathological collections are medically relevant not only for future generations of medical faculty and future research, but they are also important in the history of medicine, the history of the institutions to which they belong, and to the wider understanding of the cultural history of the body. Moreover, anatomical collections are crucial to new scholarly inter-disciplinary studies that investigate the interaction between arts and sciences, especially medicine, and offer a venue for the study of interactions between anatomists, scientists, anatomical artists and other groups, as well as the display and presentation of natural history and medical cabinets. In considering the fate of anatomical collections - and the importance of the keeper’s decisions with respect to collections - this volume will make an important methodological contribution to the study of collections and to discussions on how to preserve universities’ academic heritage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Wistar, or Anatomical Museum of the University of Pennsylvania Some very finished lymphatic preparations are of domestic origin. The models of wood were executed by Mr. Rush, a distinguished carver of this city. In the year 1824, the Managers of the Pennsylvania Hospital, with a kindness which has met with the highest commendation, gave to the University their Anatomical Cabinet, consisting in preparations - in models of wax made by Dr. Chovet - and in plaster casts and crayon drawings, which were originally sent to this country by Dr. Fothergill, of London, in 1762.
