Book excerpt: The warrior breathed in again, letting the bitterly cold air enter and then leave in a slow, controlled mist from his lips. He crouched low to the ground, removing his helmet from under his arm and placing it in the already fallen snow. With a glance over his shoulder, he observed the life that existed only before a battle. Oryan, son of Armay, was always destined for greatness. After spending his childhood as a slave, he finds himself thrust into a life of competitive fighting, where he realizes his potential as an unconquerable competitor. When his exploits in the arena draw the attention of a high-ranking military officer, he is forced to serve the very Empire his father fought against. Played on the strings of cruel puppeteers, he fights for a future on the brink of chaos. Can one man change the world? If a hero falls, can the heart of another bring him back? Can a life lived in darkness and death ultimately end in forgiveness and redemption? The answers to these questions are at the heart and soul of the man called The Last Archide. 'Chad has created a vivid and incredible world with The Last Archide, and has only begun to tell a tale that can easily be described as epic...this masterful tale enthralls readers.' —C. Trebus, Service Coordinator & Technical Writer

Book The Complete Poppy War Trilogy

Download or read book The Complete Poppy War Trilogy written by R. F. Kuang and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 2037 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From R. F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Babel, this collection features the novels in her historical military fantasy trilogy—The Poppy War, The Dragon Republic, and The Burning God—a complete epic inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic. The Poppy War A war orphan, Rin earned her place in Nikan’s most elite military school. There, she discovers her lethal, unearthly power of shamanism—and learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive. When an inevitable conflict arises between longtime enemies the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, Rin realizes her shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity. . . The Dragon Republic After committing an atrocity in battle, shamanic warrior Rin is consumed with guilt, an opium addiction, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix god. Channeling her anger against the Empress who betrayed Rin’s homeland, she chooses to join forces with the Empress’s enemy, the Dragon Warlord. But as Rin discovers the true natures of the Empress and the Dragon Warlord, the temptation to unleash the Phoenix’s fearsome power grows—and so does her vengeance. . . The Burning God After saving Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress in a brutal civil war, Rin realizes that her homeland’s real power lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Vowing to defeat all who threaten the shamanic arts, Rin’s power and influence grows—but so does the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it. . . “Mixing historical parallels of Chinese history, the themes of war, politics, and colonialism are balanced with terrific, flawed characters and amazing worldbuilding.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Book The Remnants of War

Download or read book The Remnants of War written by John Mueller and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "War... is merely an idea, an institution, like dueling or slavery, that has been grafted onto human existence. It is not a trick of fate, a thunderbolt from hell, a natural calamity, or a desperate plot contrivance dreamed up by some sadistic puppeteer on high. And it seems to me that the institution is in pronounced decline, abandoned as attitudes toward it have changed, roughly following the pattern by which the ancient and formidable institution of slavery became discredited and then mostly obsolete."—from the Introduction War is one of the great themes of human history and now, John Mueller believes, it is clearly declining. Developed nations have generally abandoned it as a way for conducting their relations with other countries, and most current warfare (though not all) is opportunistic predation waged by packs—often remarkably small ones—of criminals and bullies. Thus, argues Mueller, war has been substantially reduced to its remnants—or dregs—and thugs are the residual combatants. Mueller is sensitive to the policy implications of this view. When developed states commit disciplined troops to peacekeeping, the result is usually a rapid cessation of murderous disorder. The Remnants of War thus reinvigorates our sense of the moral responsibility bound up in peacekeeping. In Mueller's view, capable domestic policing and military forces can also be effective in reestablishing civic order, and the building of competent governments is key to eliminating most of what remains of warfare.
