Book Hitler and Czechoslovakia in World War II

Download or read book Hitler and Czechoslovakia in World War II written by Patrick Crowhurst and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invasion of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany in March 1939 helped to precipitate Europe's descent into World War II sis months later. The move, supposedly to protect the Sudeten Germans, shocked many in Europe, who saw it as a clear statement of intent by Hitler. Here, Patrick Crowhurst argues that occupation of the Sudetenland and the Czech lands was also crucial to the Nazi war machine. The armaments, factories and raw materials that Hitler seized accelerated Germany's capabilities; Czech tanks would prove crucial in the Ardennes and, as the Wehrmacht fought at Stalingrad, Armaments Minister Albert Speer was corralling Czech industrial machinery to produce engines, aircraft and equipment in support. In addition, new Slovakian and Czech primary material are used to give a new in-depth account of the German reaction to the assassination of Reinhardt Heydrich on the streets of Prague in June 1942. The recriminations were brutal, and dovetailed with Hitler's plans for the genocide of Czech Jewry. This is a new side of the History of Nazi Europe, and argues for the centrality of the Czech occupation in the overall narrative of World War II.

Book No Foreign Bones in China

Download or read book No Foreign Bones in China written by Peter Stursberg and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2002-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Foreign Bones in China tells a story of China through the eyes of a British colonial family. Through the Opium Wars, the Boxer Rebellion, two world wars, and the rise of Mao, the Shaws were witness to the turbulent birth of modern China. Captain Samuel Lewis Shaw, a merchant seaman, arrived in China in the 1830s. After a long and colourful career, he settled in the port of Foochow, married a Japanese woman, and started a family. The Shaw children grew up in Pagoda Anchorage, the heart of the Chinese tea trade, and expected to spend their lives in this beautiful place. But a few years later, they were forced to leave. In a dramatic display of pro-Chinese nationalism, foreigners were expelled from the country—even to the bones lying in their graves. Told with emotion and insight, No Foreign Bones in China explores cultural history in lavish detail. In re-creating the story of his family, Peter Stursberg reveals history as it was lived and made.

Book The English Language Teacher in Global Civil Society

Download or read book The English Language Teacher in Global Civil Society written by Barbara M. Birch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can English language teachers contribute to peace locally and globally? English language teachers and learners are located in the global civil society – an international network of civil organizations and NGOs related to human rights, the environment, and sustainable peace. English, with its special role as an international language, is a major tool for communication within this network. On the local level, many teachers are interested in promoting reconciliation and sustainable peace, but often do not know how to do so. This book provides information, analysis, and techniques to help teachers around the world take action toward this goal. Balancing, in a readable and accessible way, the global and the local, core and periphery, cultural diffusion and resistance, theory and practice, pessimism and optimism, outsider and insider perspectives, the expert role and the apprentice role, and prescriptive and elicitive methods, it offers an alternative to literature about critical applied linguistics, globalization, and peace education that is simply too complex and wordy to spread easily from theoretician to the classroom teacher. The English Teacher in Global Civil Society: synthesizes threads from many fields and topics into a coherent and empowering argument for the activist role English language teachers can take to promote social change draws on humanistic education, peace education, cross-cultural understanding, problem-posing, cooperative learning, and critical thinking methodologies to help English language teachers learn how to teach conflict resolution skills in their classrooms covers issues in critical applied linguistics, approaches and methodologies in ESL/EFL, global and local curricular issues, and specific skill areas such reading, writing, and speaking suggests a new goal for English language teachers: global citizenship. This engaging, informative, provocative, and highly readable book is a welcome resource for English language teacher trainers, pre-service teachers, practicing classroom teachers, and Peace Corps workers around the world.

Book The Red Spears 1916 1949

Download or read book The Red Spears 1916 1949 written by Hsuan-chi Tai and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Tai Hsüan-chih’s work on the Red Spear Society, the subject was a little understood movement that seemed of only passing interest to scholars of China—intriguing for its peculiar beliefs and rituals, perhaps, but hardly of central importance to modern Chinese history. Today, however, thanks in no small measure to the pioneering work of Professor Tai, the Red Spears have gained a secure niche in scholarship on modern China. Their numbers (reaching perhaps some three million participants at the height of the movement) and enduring (lasting intermittently for several decades) should stand as reason enough for the recent scholarly attention. But the Red Spears have generated interest for other reasons as well. As research has developed into the history both of China’s traditional rural rebellions and of her Communist revolution has developed over the past few years, the Red Spears have assumed increasing significance. A movement which bore marked similarities to earlier Chinese uprisings (most notably the Boxers), the Red Spears nevertheless operated in a later period of history (right through the middle of the twentieth century) which brought them in direct contact with Communist revolutionaries. An analysis of the Red Spears thus becomes important both for what it can tell us about longstanding patterns of rural rebellion in China, and for what it suggests about the nature of Chinese revolution.

Book US Foreign Policy and the End of the Cold War in Africa

Download or read book US Foreign Policy and the End of the Cold War in Africa written by Flavia Gasbarri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the end of the Cold War in Africa and its impact on post-Cold War US foreign policy in the continent. The fall of the Berlin Wall is widely considered the end of the Cold War; however, it documents just one of the many "ends", since the Cold War was a global conflict. This book looks at one of the most neglected extra-European battlegrounds, the African continent, and explores how American foreign policy developed in this region between the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Drawing on a wide range of recently disclosed documents, the book shows that the Cold War in Africa ended in 1988, preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall. It also reveals how, since then, some of the most controversial and inconsistent episodes of post-Cold War US foreign policy in Africa have been deeply rooted in the unique process whereby American rivalry with the USSR found its end in the continent. The book challenges the traditional narrative by presenting an original perspective on the study of the end of the Cold War and provides new insights into the shaping of US foreign policy during the so-called ‘unipolar moment’. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War history, US foreign policy, African politics and international relations.

Book Morality and Ethics at War

Download or read book Morality and Ethics at War written by Deane-Peter Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Morality and Ethics of War, which includes a foreword by Major General Susan Coyle, ethicist Deane-Peter Baker goes beyond existing treatments of military ethics to address a fundamental problem: the yawning gap between the diverse moral frameworks defining personal identity on the one hand, and the professional military ethic on the other. Baker argues that overcoming this chasm is essential to minimising the ethical risks that can lead to operational and strategic failure for military forces engaged in today's complex conflict environment. He contends that spanning the gap is vital in preventing moral injury from befalling the nation's uniformed servants. Drawing on a revised account of what he calls 'the Just War Continuum', Baker develops a bridging framework that combines conceptual clarity and rigour with insights from cutting edge psychological research and creates a practical means for military leaders to negotiate the moral chasm in military affairs.
