Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Warden These tales were written by the Author, not one immediately after another, - not intended to be in any sequence one to another except in regard to the two first, - with an intention rather that there should be no such sequence, but that the stories should go forth to the public as being in all respects separate, the sequence being only in the Author's mind. I, the Author, had formed for myself so complete a picture of the locality, had acquired so accurate a knowledge of the cathedral town and the county in which I had placed the scene, and had become by a long-continued mental dwelling in it so intimate with sundry of its inhabitants, that to go back to it and write about it again and again have been one of the delights of my life. But I had taught myself to believe that few novels written in continuation, one of another, had been successful. Even Scott, even Thackeray, had failed to renew a great interest. Fielding and Dickens never ventured the attempt. Therefore, when Dr. Thorne, the third of the present series, was sent into the world, it was put forth almost with a hope that the locality might not be recognised. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The College Warden The following narrative was undertaken in order to record a life which was full of stimulus to all, and especially the youth who came in contact with it. The attempt is made to draw the picture from an intimate companion's standpoint, for such was the writer. If the filial affection show too markedly, it will be pardoned, when the intent of the author, to share a glorious example vouchsafed him, is known. This brief sketch is submitted under the title which appeared most suited to its bearer. He lost his personal identity in the exercise of his office. Biographical detail is omitted as much as possible, that alone being introduced which appeared to have a direct bearing on the character picture in hand. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. D: Sometime Warden of Racine College From all that has passed in these sad days, from a bitterness I have not deserved, nay, even from these warm hearts whose human sympathy has sustained me in this, my time of trial, I turn myself away. I lift my heart to Him on Whose Almighty Arm I lean, and in Whose mighty power even my weakness is strong, and louder than the din of angry words, nay, because of the prayers that so many have lovingly prayed, I hear the gra cions promise. Book At the World s Mercy Classic Reprint

Download or read book At the World s Mercy Classic Reprint written by Florence Warden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At the World's Mercy Whenever I hear of a wife or widow and young family left suddenly unprovided for, I reckon up the children on this wise - so many ne'er-do-wells and so many governesses. I have met with exceptions, but the rule is sound. When my father, a wealthy manufacturer, failed in business, he railed at the world for a little while, and then, calling us together, made us a manly and affecting speech, in which he compared himself to Hercules, and declared his resolution to fight the world for us all, and win us another luxurious home; then he set out for Australia in search of his labors, leaving my mother and sister and myself in lodgings in Pimlico, and recommending us to the care of my brother, a lad of twenty, who had just been expelled from college. My high-spirited mother rather resented my father's conduct, and was of opinion that it would hare been more heroic to remain and starve with us at Pimlico than to run away and let us starve alone. It was at this point that we promised to follow the rule I have stated. My sister Elsie, who was sixteen, and I, two years older, never for one moment thought of looking for support to James, who threw his arms dramatically round my mother's neck and declared for the fiftieth time that he would "turn over a new leaf"; but we instinctively took up the advertisement-sheet of the "Times." Book Warden Cassidy on Prisons and Convicts

Download or read book Warden Cassidy on Prisons and Convicts written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warden Cassidy on Prisons and Convicts: Remarks From Observation and Experience Gained During Thirty-Seven Years Continuous Service in the Administration of the Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennsylvania The Eastern State Penitentiary of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, has perhaps been the subject of more comment than any penal institution in the United States, or indeed in Europe. It was established in 1829. The cause is explained by reason of the method of confinement and the discipline of the system of punishment, which was original with that institution. It is the only one so governed in this country, while several prisons in Europe have adopted the plan, more or less modified. It is unfortunate that misinformation or misconception, and positive ignorance, exists of the methods in practice here, even among otherwise careful and well-informed sociologists. In addition to this, the many inquiries that are constantly made as to the method of applying punitive treatment in this institution is a sufficient apology, if any be needed, for a brief statement of the principles of the administration and their practical application to the treatment of convicts sent to this institution. Positive, practical knowledge of the subject in its various phases is regarded as of some value. Theoretic and general observations, however well presented, often fail to impress the inquirers as effectively as the opinions which experience can best furnish. When the systems of convict punishment, and especially that known as "The Individual Treatment," as applied in the Eastern State Penitentiary, are discussed and explained by competent authority, before those who are expected to be familiar with the questions involved, it necessarily has the merit of authoritative statement subjected to critical examination. It is, therefore, evidence from actual practical knowledge and experience. When it is seen that the remarks contained in the extracts now presented were addressed to those who were engaged in the administration of systems of convict punishment, and also on different occasions, during several years, it adds to their value, because those to whom they were addressed were competent to understand and criticise them. It will be observed from the following pages that there are many subjects directly connected with the imprisonment of criminals that are rarely considered. To indicate the range of these subjects and their importance in the study and decision of punitive systems, as well as the characteristics of convicts and their individual relation to crime and the adaptation of punishment to each person, these pages contain information that is of importance because not accessible in theoretic disquisitions, which are often superficial. It is practical knowledge which long experience makes veritable that will command respect. The extracts from official reports, and discussions at public meetings of men competent to understand the subjects considered, are here reproduced.
