Book excerpt: Juggling motherhood and her job as a real-estate agent, Elizabeth Jordan wishes her husband could help more around the house. But Tony’s rising career as a pharmaceutical salesman demands more and more of his time. With a nice home in the suburbs and a lovely young daughter, they appear to have it all—yet they can’t seem to spend time together without fighting. Hoping for a new listing, Elizabeth visits the home of Clara Williams, an elderly widow, and is both amused and uncomfortable when Clara starts asking pointed questions about her marriage and faith. But it’s Clara’s secret prayer room, with its walls covered in requests and answers, that has Elizabeth most intrigued . . . even if she’s not ready to take Clara’s suggestion that she create a prayer room of her own. As tensions at home escalate, though, Elizabeth begins to realize that her family is worth fighting for, and she can’t win this battle on her own. Stepping out in blind faith, putting her prayers for her family and their future in God’s hands, might be her only chance at regaining the life she was meant for.

Book excerpt: On May 10, 1940, Britain's new prime minister strode purposefully down to the basement of an anonymous government building and entered a top secret command center. "This," growled Winston Churchill, "is the room from which I will run the war." At the war's end, Churchill and his colleagues left the chamber and locked the door behind them--and the War Rooms remained there, untouched and little known, until the early 1980s. Today, those historic chambers are on display as the Churchill War Rooms exhibit. The Churchill War Rooms Guidebook provides an inside view of Britain's wartime nerve center. In this concise, but informative reference, readers can meet the people who worked at the War Rooms, see how the work carried out in this underground bunker helped Britain win the war, and delve into the life story of the man himself--Winston Churchill. Highly illustrated, this is an accessible overview of one of Britain's most significant historic sites.

Book excerpt: Men have failed. The fictional character of Peter Pan, and his eternal flight of fancy in Neverland, along with the mantra, "Never grow up," has done great damage to the male psyche. The United States is populated with man children who have neglected their call to lead a life worthy of record. Families are broken. Mothers have been abandoned. Children are fatherless. Leaders are failing to lead. The world of men has become spiritually bankrupt. Third Option Men (TOM) vows to change this reality. Through a coordinated, multi-faceted approach, TOM plans to win back the hearts and minds of men. This isn't chauvinism. This isn't Cro-Magnon, hairy-skinned, chest beating. This is real change, in a real world. War Room: A Combat Guide to Men's Ministry is not only a vital resource for men who desperately long to be validated, but the in-your-face style in which it was written will be a welcome relief in a world full of "politically correct" essays that produce little change.

Nonetheless, this campaign laid the foundation for a major shift in Canadian politics, bringing the Conservative Party to power and changing the balance of opposition parties. Inside the NDP War Room takes readers behind the scenes to investigate the nature of credibility in the complex communicative game of election campaigns. James McLean considers the ways in which the idea of credibility is used to explain how messages are crafted and articulated, how journalists are implicated, and what the Canadian public needs to know about what is at stake in the competition for votes. He talks to insiders about their communication practices and strategies, and reflects upon the grand narratives and small opportunistic moments brought before the Canadian public when power is up for grabs. A vivid, first-hand account of campaign strategizing, Inside the NDP War Room offers insights into the NDP breakthroughs of 2011, the full meaning of Quebec's "orange wave," and the future of a party preparing for a new reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the presidency ended up with a cabinet filled with people he had run against. Lincoln looked for ways to engage with the people. Lincoln's way of leadership provides insight as to what made him be the president he became, and also what brought his administration to come to respect him over time. There are twenty different leadership lessons for government, according to the practices of Abraham Lincoln. These practices are what lead him to becoming known as a people's president. The War Room shows a new way of leadership, not only in politics, but for the election process in looking for an Abraham Lincoln in politics today. Being a modern-day Lincoln isn't an easy sell for many who hold government positions. There is a level of ethics that is needed in order to bring forth a change. Regaining such trust among political leadership will take much time for political leadership to make a difference in the lives of the people--not only for today, but for the countless tomorrows that are ahead in the history of governing.

Book Lessons Learned from War Room Designs and Implementations

Download or read book Lessons Learned from War Room Designs and Implementations written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maximizing the flow and control of information is key to competitiveness, whether it be on the battlefield, the campaign trail or in the boardroom. Both government and commercial organizations have set up "war rooms" as a means to handle and enhance decision making and planning. There have been both failures and successes from which worthwhile lessons have been learned and can be applied to future war room developmental efforts. Successful war rooms are innovative tools used to manage information in a time-sensitive environment. They are dynamic facilities, which channel the collection, analysis and dissemination of information. They foster collaboration and team based decision making. Command Posts and other optimized facilities supporting military and business decision making (war rooms) can benefit from the experiences and lessons learned from war room designs and implementations developed for government, industry and political campaigns. This paper describes some of the author's most recent and relevant developments and experiences in "analog", "digital" and "virtual" war rooms. Case studies include: a counter-proliferation war room used by DARPA to influence their investment decision making; an advocacy campaign war room used to support a CEO of a major utility in his efforts to slow the pace of deregulation; and a war room supporting a large telecommunication firm's decision making.
