  • Author : Tim Hollis
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi

Download or read book Toons in Toyland written by Tim Hollis and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every living American adult likely prized one childhood toy that featured the happy image of an animated cartoon or comic strip character. There is an ever-growing market for these collectibles, and stacks of books pose as pricing guides. Yet Tim Hollis is the first to examine the entire story of character licensing and merchandising from a historical view. Toons in Toyland focuses mainly on the post-World War II years, circa 1946-1980, when the last baby boomers were in high school. During those years, the mass merchandising of cartoon characters peaked. However, the concept of licensing cartoon characters for toys, trinkets, and other merchandise dates back to the very first newspaper comics character, the Yellow Kid, who debuted in 1896 and was soon appearing on a variety of items. Eventually, cartoon producers and comic strip artists counted on merchandising as a major part of their revenue stream. It still plays a tremendous role in the success of the Walt Disney Company and many others today. Chapters examine storybooks (such as Little Golden Books), comic books, records, board games, jigsaw puzzles, optical toys (including View-Master and Kenner's Give-a-Show Projector), and holiday paraphernalia. Extending even beyond toys, food companies licensed characters galore--remember the Peanuts characters plugging bread and Dolly Madison snacks? And roadside attractions, amusement parks, campgrounds, and restaurants--think Yogi Bear and Jellystone Park Campgrounds--all bought a bit of cartoon magic to lure the green waves of tourists' dollars.

Book Before Mickey

Download or read book Before Mickey written by Donald Crafton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-12-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This witty and fascinating study reminds us that there was animation before Disney: about thirty years of creativity and experimentation flourishing in such extraordinary work as Girdie the Dinosaur and Felix the Cat. Before Mickey, the first and only in-depth history of animation from 1898-1928, includes accounts of mechanical ingenuity, marketing and art. Crafton is equally adept at explaining techniques of sketching and camera work, evoking characteristic styles of such pioneering animators as Winsor McCay and Ladislas Starevitch, placing work in its social and economic context, and unraveling the aesthetic impact of specific cartoons. "Before Mickey's scholarship is quite lively and its descriptions are evocative and often funny. The history of animation coexisted with that of live-action film but has never been given as much attention."—Tim Hunter, New York Times

Book Worth Fighting For

Download or read book Worth Fighting For written by Lara Campbell and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians, veterans, museums, and public education campaigns have all documented and commemorated the experience of Canadians in times of war. But Canada also has a long, rich, and important historical tradition of resistance to both war and militarization. This collection brings together the work of sixteen scholars on the history of war resistance. Together they explore resistance to specific wars (including the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, and Vietnam), the ideology and nature of resistance (national, ethical, political, spiritual), and organized activism against militarization (such as cadet training, the Cold War, and nuclear arms). As the federal government continues to support the commemoration and celebration of Canada’s participation in past wars, this collection offers a timely response that explores the complexity of Canada’s position in times of war and the role of social movements in challenging the militarization of Canadian society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danny's story began on a hot August day in the summer of 1959 when his youthful curiosity caused him to set out to follow a river. This innocent exploring adventure gave him an unexpected discovery, an old cabin secluded deep in the forest. It was at this cabin that he met Ben and had his first taste of sweet white port and eventually discovering the awesome, exciting pleasure of "man play." Ben and his lifelong friend Tony enlisted as soldiers in the Korean War. When Tony was killed at the war's end in 1953, Ben's life was shattered. There was no family to return to, so he traveled around the country for six years, looking for something or someone, hoping to find himself and bring purpose to his life. His journey brought him back to the cabin where he and Tony had spent their youth. It was here that Ben and Danny met; it was there that life would change for the both of them. But as Danny was to discover, there was a price to pay as the innocence of youth slipped away. There were consequences that came with this new, sexually charged coming-of-age world. Danny found the Toyland of youth's innocence does have its borders, and once crossed, there is no going back, not ever!
