Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Download or read book Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 1914 1918 written by Wylly and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You are leaving home to fight for the safety and honour of My Empire." "Belgium, whose country we are pledged to defend, has been attacked, and France is about to be invaded by the same powerful foe."I have implicit confidence in you, My soldiers. Duty is your watchword, and I know your duty will be nobly done." -King George V The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was initially formed in 1881 from two battalions: the 1st Battalion from the former 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Battalion from the former 81st (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers). By 1914, after recruiting men from the main towns of Central Lancashire, the Regiment consisted of 21 Battalions. It went on to become a pivotal force during the war effort, defending, attacking and serving honourably and relentlessly during each campaign. The vast contribution of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment during the war is judiciously documented by Wylly, as he brings to life the campaigns which saw the Regiment serve on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, and in Macedonia, East Africa, Palestine and Mesopotamia. Describing the many campaigns, allies and enemies encountered, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment is an unembellished and treasured account of the highs and lows of the war effort. From the defence of Ypres and the Battle of the Ancre, the battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Loos, the Arras daylight raid, entry into Cambrai and the often frustrating campaigns in East Africa, this is a detailed and proud history. In total, 7590 casualties were suffered, 80 Battle Honours were awarded and the Victoria Cross was awarded to three members of the Regiment. Harold Carmichael Wylly (1858-1932) was a British colonel and military historian.Colonel Wylly published a number of military-based books, including a biography of Sir Joseph Thackwell. His later works specialised in the First World War.

Within a few years of its foundation the regiment took part in the losing battle against the Jacobites at Prestonpans outside Edinburgh in 1745, was on the winning side at Quebec in 1759, lost again during the American War of Independence before winning glory in the Peninsular War when its battalions fought with Sir John Moore at Corunna and with Wellington at Vittoria, St Sebastian, Bidoassa, the Nivelle and the Nive, winning a record number of battle honours. The Lancashires fought in Burma and the Crimea and the final chapters of this fine unit history look at the effects of them of the Volunteer movement and the foundation of the Territorial Army.
