But he was well equipped for the effort, for it will hardly be denied that his knowledge of Welsh char acter is Of the most intimate. In his previous writings he has Shown himself a candid friend Of his countrymen, and played a part which demands no small moral courage; for it is the prophet who prophesies smooth things who alone finds honour in his own country.
