Book excerpt: This book takes the reader on a unique journey around the world in a discussion about various economies, my personal adventures along the way, business outlooks and observations for each country, lists of recommended activities in each country with a focus on outdoor adventure experiences, and lessons learned in terms of both travel and business. Given my experience as an investment advisor and what I would consider to be a deep knowledge base when it comes to global adventure excursions, I believe this writing provides a much different perspective than your average travel or investment book. It reads like a thriller in detailing extreme activities such as skydiving over Queenstown, New Zealand, while weaving in the details mentioned above. I will cover my travels across 17 countries spread out across six continents. As of the time of this writing, I had visited 28 countries. This book is the culmination of five years of work and thousands of hours of research in terms of country-specific macroeconomic data, information about local laws and regulations, historical facts about specific countries, and recommendations for mostly adventure-related activities to do while in a country. I have learned a lot through the years by studying individual businesses and macroeconomic developments, but I learned more through the process of writing this book than anything else.

Book excerpt: In his book, the author describes his life from age two, after the second world war, to seventy today. His early life in an RAF nissen hut in Lytham St Annes; hard times at boarding schools; an archaeological dig at Milton Keynes; lengthy train travel to Istanbul; smallpox requiring departure from Turkey to Cyprus military base, thence by ship to Egypt, Port Alexandria and military train to Luxor, in a country eerily awaiting developments after the destruction of three jumbo jets. He also describes his time in New York, Washington and Philadelphia, meeting his wife while hitch hiking in Ireland; working for two legal firms and for the catholic church, both positive as the latter included the successful visit to the UK by Pope John Paul II, but negative as it involved appalling child protection cases.

Book The Philosophical Investor

Download or read book The Philosophical Investor written by Gary Carmell and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in Southern California, Gary Carmell has become very familiar with tectonic shifts: cataclysmic changes in the earth’s crust that cause earthquakes and tsunamis. Carmell has also experienced numerous tectonic shifts in the economic landscape in his nearly thirty-year investing career. Correctly anticipating economic trends has allowed his real estate investment and management firm, CWS Capital Partners LLC, to grow from assets of $250 million in the late 1980s to over $3 billion today. CWS foresaw the collapse of manufactured housing in the late 1990s and anticipated a massive shift from homeownership to renting, prompting them to reposition aggressively for growth in apartment construction and management. Carmell feels special pride in the results his company’s delivers for its investors, as a result—long-term average annual returns exceed 13 percent—even during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Navigating turbulent economic markets and experiencing his two-year-old son’s near-fatal stroke has taught Carmell that real success requires not only financial acumen, but also deep reflection. He credits Shakespeare, Hume, and Schopenhauer as his mentors, with more modern sages like Buffett, Soros, and Munger also guiding his actions. In The Philosophical Investor: From Wisdom to Wealth, he shares the insights he has gained along the way in the hope of inspiring a new cadre of critical thinking investors.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Investor Protection

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Investor Protection written by Arthur B. Laby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of investor protection has occupied investors, businesses, regulators, academics, and courts since the 1930s. The topic exploded in importance after the 2008 financial crisis and the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme of the same year. Investor protection scholarship now seeks to respond to developments such as the institutionalization of the markets, the democratization of finance, and the enhanced role of market professionals and other gatekeepers. Additionally, although the philosophy of full disclosure remains the guiding principle behind the securities laws, recent research has questioned the merits of a disclosure-based regime. In light of these trends, regulators try to strike the right balance between imposing a strict investor protection regime, on the one hand, and giving businesses the freedom to innovate new projects, market new services, and reduce costs, on the other. The Cambridge Handbook of Investor Protection brings together leading scholars to inform this debate and fill a gap left by these developments.

Book Markets in Chaos

Download or read book Markets in Chaos written by Brendan Hughes and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is useful for those seeking to learn about the history of market crises and individuals that want to learn about protection against downside risks for an investment portfolio. The purpose of this book is not to convince the reader to attempt to anticipate the timing of the next market crash, but rather for the reader to be able to draw parallels (and some contrasts) between the different crises in history. The book reviews case studies related to specific macroeconomic event triggers ranging from COVID-19 to hyperinflation. Readers will come away with extensive knowledge of different market crisis events spread across countries and timelines. The reader will be well versed on important macroeconomic topics such as the history of currencies. Perhaps most importantly, readers will feel better prepared to handle the next market catastrophe. Audiences such as business school students and those that are a part of organizations such as the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute will find this book of interest.
