Book Nature and the Human Soul

Download or read book Nature and the Human Soul written by Bill Plotkin and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the pervasive longing for meaning and fulfillment in this time of crisis, Nature and the Human Soul introduces a visionary ecopsychology of human development that reveals how fully and creatively we can mature when soul and wild nature guide us. Depth psychologist and wilderness guide Bill Plotkin presents a model for a human life span rooted in the cycles and qualities of the natural world, a blueprint for individual development that ultimately yields a strategy for cultural transformation. If it is true, as Plotkin and others observe, that we live in a culture dominated by adolescent habits and desires, then the enduring societal changes we so desperately need won’t happen until we individually and collectively evolve into an engaged, authentic adulthood. With evocative language and personal stories, including those of elders Thomas Berry and Joanna Macy, this book defines eight stages of human life — Innocent, Explorer, Thespian, Wanderer, Soul Apprentice, Artisan, Master, and Sage — and describes the challenges and benefits of each. Plotkin offers a way of progressing from our current egocentric, aggressively competitive, consumer society to an ecocentric, soul-based one that is sustainable, cooperative, and compassionate. At once a primer on human development and a manifesto for change, Nature and the Human Soul fashions a template for a more mature, fulfilling, and purposeful life — and a better world.

Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves. We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense.

Book excerpt: The human nature is unfortunately a 'sinful' (corrupted, immoral, and depraved) nature. We are not what we were originally designed to be-we're a long way from it. We continue to 'fail' in one way or another on a daily basis. Try as we might, we can not always make ourselves do what is right. We humans at all times wrestle with good and evil in this crazy world-and within ourselves. The purpose of this book is to help you, dear reader, to understand human nature and our ongoing, individual struggle with good and evil-help you to know just who you are and what you will need to learn in order to deal with yourself as a human being. It will be a difficult journey-yet it is indeed an insightful and most needful trek. However, there are many who care very little about this journey-many who fail to acknowledge the deceitfulness of human nature-especially their own. It requires an unwavering pursuit of honesty in order to take an in-depth look at one's self-a rare endeavor in this present world.Do you, dear reader, have the quality that it takes to make that endeavor? If at this time you do not, it can be developed, if you are willing.

Download or read book Man V Nature written by Diane Cook and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A refreshingly imaginative, daring debut collection of stories that illuminates with audacious wit the complexity of human behavior, and the veneer of civilization over our darkest urges. Told with perfect rhythm and unyielding brutality, these stories expose unsuspecting men and women to the realities of nature, the primal instincts of man, and the dark humor and heartbreak of our struggle to not only thrive, but survive. In "Girl on Girl," a high school freshman goes to disturbing lengths to help an old friend. An insatiable temptress pursues the one man she can't have in "Meteorologist Dave Santana." And in the title story, a long-fraught friendship comes undone when three buddies get impossibly lost on a lake it is impossible to get lost on. Below the quotidian surface of Diane Cook's worlds lurks an unexpected surreality that reveals our most curious, troubling, and bewildering behavior. Other stories explore situations pulled directly from the wild, imposing on human lives the danger, tension, and precariousness of the natural world: a pack of "not-needed" boys takes refuge in a murky forest where they compete against one another for their next meal; an alpha male is pursued through city streets by murderous rivals and desirous women; helpless newborns are snatched from their suburban yards by a man who stalks them. Through these characters Cook asks: What is at the root of our most heartless, selfish impulses? Why are people drawn together in such messy, needful ways? When the unexpected intrudes upon the routine, what do we discover about ourselves? As entertaining as it is dangerous, this accomplished collection explores the boundary between the wild and the civilized, where nature acts as a catalyst for human drama and lays bare our vulnerabilities, fears, and desires.

Book Understanding Human Nature

Download or read book Understanding Human Nature written by Alfred Adler and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its first appearance in English in 1927, this book has become a classic, and easily the most widely read of Adler's works. Its re-publication at this time, with a new introduction, has special significance. For in no period of human history has it been more imperative for man to understand himself and his place in society. Thoughtful men have many times called attention to the alarming disparity between our gigantic conquests in the physical world and the lamentable inadequacy of our knowledge of ourselves. This state of affairs, as much as any single factor in our civilization, has given rise to the neurotic personality of our times. Socrates made much of the admonition "Know thyself," but he neglected to give directions for attaining that knowledge. The problem has remained one for modern psychiatry to undertake. "Understanding Human Nature" is a step along the way. Written for the layman, it is notable for its simplicity, its warm and understanding viewpoint. Adler really liked people. When he approaches the problems of why we think and behave in certain patterns; why things go wrong with us in our mental life; why, in a world of which we are the masters, we nevertheless are tortured by doubt and inferiority; why fear and greed drive us to cruelty and aggression; why we remain such a mystery to ourselves -- in seeking the answers to these problems, Adler is not simply the clinician, but first of all a fellow human being. His aim is always the same: The creation of a mature, well-balanced individual capable of meeting the responsibilities and decisions of the modern world. for that reason, this book has proved to be one of the most enlightened and helpful in the field of popular psychiatry."--Inside covers

Book excerpt: Human nature and behavior is complex and puzzling. Driven by experience, ambitions, struggles, passion, emotions etc humans try to find ways to survive and progress. Every individual is unique and shapes differently. Yet there exists a common thread or a general pattern showing a natural trend. It is possible to understand this trend if one keeps free from biases, ideologies or closed thinking. The positivity could provide a picture that would be closer to reality. Peculiar human behaviors could be realistically understood within a general pattern. In daily experiences, one gets ideas and thoughts to understand the diverse behavior of people around. Collating and expressing these thoughts on diverse topics needs efforts to shade out unrealistic contents and take it closer to the reality. The topics covered in the book are of common interest and readers may find them closer to their daily experiences. Overall, there is a message to be positive, going closer to the natural processes and taking a balanced view even in puzzling situations. Understanding human nature is a utilitarian exercise, diverse, unending, interesting and relaxing. Contributing to this dispassionate exercise is always a pleasure for anyone.

Book The Wandering Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael C. Corballis
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-04-15
  • ISBN : 022623861X
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The Wandering Mind written by Michael C. Corballis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corballis argues that mind-wandering has many constructive and adaptive features. These range from mental time travel?the wandering back and forth through time, not only to plan our futures based on past experience, but also to generate a continuous sense of who we are--to the ability to inhabit the minds of others, increasing empathy and social understanding. Through mind-wandering, we invent, tell stories, and expand our mental horizons. Mind wandering , hardly the sign of a faulty network or aimless distraction, actually underwrites creativity, whether as a Wordsworth wandering lonely as a cloud, or an Einstein imagining himself travelling on a beam of light. Corballis takes readers on a mental journey in chapters that can be savored piecemeal, as the minds of readers wander in different ways, and sometimes have limited attentional capacity.
