Book Behold the Walls

Download or read book Behold the Walls written by Clara Luper and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 19, 1958, Clara Luper and thirteen Black youth walked into Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City and sat down at the lunch counter. When they tried to order, they were denied service. As they sat in silence, refusing to leave, the surrounding white customers unleashed a torrent of threats and racial slurs. This first organized sit-in in Oklahoma—almost two years before the more famous sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina—sparked other demonstrations in Oklahoma and other states. Behold the Walls is Luper’s engrossing firsthand account of how the movement she helped launch ended legal racial segregation. First published in 1979, Behold the Walls now features a new introduction and 33 newly selected historical photos. Luper’s direct, unvarnished account captures the immediacy of the events she witnessed. As a Black woman, Luper refused to let either racism or sexism deter her from stepping forth as a leader. Born in 1923, Clara Luper taught history in Oklahoma public schools and led the NAACP Youth Council. The students who sat in at Katz Drug and other businesses belonged to that organization. Luper highlights the contributions of others, especially young people, in breaking down the walls of segregation in Oklahoma through numerous demonstrations, marches, and voter registration campaigns. This commemorative edition of Luper’s eye-opening autobiography, published near what would have been her 100th birthday, as well as the 65th anniversary of the sit-ins, offers invaluable insight into the history of protest in the early years of the civil rights movement. With racial inequality still at the forefront of national debate, Behold the Walls places Luper’s efforts in the larger national context of the struggle to resist injustice and inspire positive change.

Often, ladies, it’s so easy to become enthralled by the “idea of marriage”. Download or read book Finding Home written by Colleen Johnson and published by Amazon Pro Hub. This book was released on 2023-01-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a unique approach to the idea of soul care by comparing it to the concept of home. When we allow Jesus to do a transformational work in our souls to give us the feeling of home; loved, secure, nourished, accepted and healing every day. When we make it a practice to cultivate Jesus’ presence within us, we will feel at home in our inner being instead of being spiritually and emotionally “homeless”. When we cultivate the presence of Jesus and work through key soul care principles and develop a rhythm of a practices that incorporate the spiritual disciplines of feeding on God’s Word, worship and thanksgiving, listening prayer, praying scripture, and times of fasting and solitude it leads our soul home. These practices create an atmosphere that God uses to fill us with more of Himself and His ways. The more of God we have, the more He guides us to tear down walls of self-protection, find the truth of who we are in Christ, and defeat the attacks of our enemy, Satan, so that we start walking more as Jesus walked. This process brings our soul to the home where it belongs.

Book excerpt: What If There Is More to Life than What You're Living? You've felt it--the underlying anxiety that you're missing out on the good life. So you zone out, swipe up, slim down, work hard, and spin in circles trying to get it. Anjuli Paschall calls it carpe diem syndrome--the fear of not living life to the fullest. But the full life isn't found by chasing it. It's found by coming awake to it. As she puts it: "I want to be awake. I don't want to nervously navigate my life one to-do list, email, and espresso shot at a time. When my life comes to a slow halt, I want to know I savored the small moments and watched the sky change color. I want to know I didn't rush through life but received it. I want to know I came to peace with my weaknesses, loved people fearlessly, and walked with God faithfully. I hope I gave in to the audacious belief that I was loved and, miraculously, even liked." And now, Anjuli casts a compelling vision for you to live a soul-awake life too. The invitation might be as gentle as a song--or as abrupt as a rooster's crow--but God is always waking you up. You can have the life you really want, and you don't have to lose your soul trying to get it. Breathe in. Breathe out. Full life is right here.

Book You Love Your Daddy Don t You

Download or read book You Love Your Daddy Don t You written by Sarah Harrison and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mama, something terrible is wrong with me. There is blood in my panties!" Those were the words of seven-year-old Sarah. Mama told her she must have fallen or something and not to worry. Sarah went away feeling sad; her chance for help was gone! It was Sarah's alter, Susie, who had been sticking pencils and other items in her private place. Susie had come when Sarah was only four years old. Susie had become Daddy's 'special' little girl by sitting on his lap. In return he gave her a dollar for any change she had. Daddy played with Susie's pee pee and it was Susie that slept in the upstairs bedroom with her fourteen-year-old brother. Later in life, two other alters would appear. "You Love Your Daddy, Don't You?" is told through the memories of Sarah. It reveals a child's determination to survive despite profound emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. This was compounded by constant neglect from both parents. About the Author: Sarah Harrison has written several articles for the Women's Institute for Incorporation Therapy's monthly newsletter as well as articles for spiritual magazines. She also volunteers as a mentor in a local school system, helps with special group activities in an assisted living home, and provides guidance to troubled parents and teens on www.experts.com. After the death of her husband, Sarah Harrison moved from Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 to a suburb near Charlotte, North Carolina to be near her grandchildren. She has joined Harrison United Methodist Church and is active in Youth Group, Emmaus, Epiphany, and Faith Partners.

Book Essays from the Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rev. Arthur M. Scott
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2018-10-22
  • ISBN : 1641401109
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book Essays from the Soul written by Rev. Arthur M. Scott and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book began simply as tools I incorporated to enhance my understanding of A Course in Miracles and how it blends with the literature I have read and classes and seminars I have taken. Our friends and teachers, Unity minister Patty and her husband Jack Morales introduced my wife, Pati, and I to A Course in Miracles fifteen or so years after we had begun our spiritual journey(s). Each of us are in pursuit of our own respective spiritual paths, in our own individual ways as part of a life-long search for our "purpose" in life; trying to discover who we "truly" are, not the persona we've made up. It just takes some of us longer to realize it. We began with a small core group of people committed to their spiritual paths and it has grown steadily since. As the group expanded in numbers, so did the questions and people began to look to my wife and I for clarification. I realized then, that for myself, I needed to put more effort into my understanding of A Course in Miracles and how it coincided with what I had studied previously, beginning with my lineage, The Science of Mind. I began with notes for comparison, which grew into paragraphs and eventually ended up as the essays in this book. They (the essays) became, for me, a bridge between A Course in Miracles, The Science of Mind, the Gnostic Gospels, and various other religions and teachings. I am a perennial student and will probably be as long as I continue to breathe. My search for understanding, for clarification, may not be insatiable, but I cannot remember a time when I wasn't studying something, so when my wife introduced me to metaphysics, I knew that this was what I would make the topic of all my studying in the future. These essays are the essence of the information I've extracted from this process. My purpose with these essays is not to provide you with what I think to be the "only" or "right" answers to any questions, but as an explanation, understanding or clarification that resonates for me and hopefully for you. We are all unique in our individual perceptions, so my perception of some subjects may not mirror yours, but if one, or some, of my essays bring a light of understanding or help to you, or assist you in seeing an old truth in a new way, then we are both blessed. It is my belief that all gifts are meant to be shared, be it the gift our friendships, our love or our knowledge, because if we keep them to ourselves, they are of no value to anyone. If these essays provide for you a better understanding or just simplify your path, in any manner, please share them, because as St. Francis said, in his beautiful prayer, "It is in the giving that we receive." Book Valley Walls

Download or read book Valley Walls written by Glen Denny and published by Yosemite Conservancy. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a century ago a rag-tag group of innovators was building a foundation for modern American rock climbing from a makeshift home base in Yosemite. Photographer Glen Denny was a key figure in this golden age of climbing, capturing pioneering feats on camera while tackling challenging ascents himself. In entertaining short pieces enlivened by his iconic black-and-white images of Yosemite's big wall legends, Denny reveals a young man's coming of age and provides a vivid look at Yosemite’s early climbing culture. He relates such precarious achievements as hauling water in glass gallon jugs up the east face of Washington Column, nailing the 750-foot Rostrum in a punishing heat wave, and dangling overnight on El Capitan’s Dihedral Wall in a lightning storm. Each true tale captures the spirit of historic Camp 4, where Denny and others plan the next big climb while living on the cheap and dodging park rangers.

The two boys and Mosche's sister Miriam become friends, spending time together as Mosche teaches Josef to read. Miriam herself learns eagerly, though few of her eleventh-century contemporaries think it desirable to educate girls. The boys are excited to meet the beloved Rabbi Scholomo of Troyes. He is called "the rabbi of Worms" by the local Jews since he once studied and taught in their city.
