Book Dictionary of Biblical Criticism and Interpretation

Download or read book Dictionary of Biblical Criticism and Interpretation written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2007. Compiling the results from contemporary and exciting areas of research into one single important volume, this book stands ahead of its field in providing a comprehensive one-stop Handbook reference of biblical interpretation. Examining a wide range of articles on many of the recognized interpreters including Augustine, Luther and Calvin, up to the modern figures of Martin Hengel and T.W. Manson, Porter expertly combines the study of biblical interpretation with the examination of the theological and philosophical preconceptions that have influenced it, and surveys the history of interpretation from different perspectives. Key perspectives studied include: the historical dimension; addressing how interpretation has developed at various periods of time; from early Jewish exegesis to the historical-critical method; the conceptual approach; looks at the various schools of thought that have generated biblical interpretation, and compares and contrasts competing conceptual models of interpretation; the personal perspective; addresses the reality of biblical interpretation by individuals who have helped plot the course of theological development; With relevant bibliographies and a guide to further reading, this Dictionary will be an extremely important reference held for many years, not only by libraries, but also by students, scholars, clergy and teachers of this fascinating and high-profile subject.

Book The Risings of the Luddites

Download or read book The Risings of the Luddites written by Frank Peel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1968. Interest in the Luddite machine-breaking and food riots of 1812 which took place in the North and Midlands continues unabated. Peel was a pioneer local historian, collecting oral accounts from participants and old inhabitants, as well as studying the printed evidence carefully. In the introduction to the new edition, E. P. Thompson clams that Peel's general account of Luddism in that part of Yorkshire in which he was interested (around Huddersfield) has proved to be more accurate than the analysis of Luddism as a purely industrial phenomenon given by twentieth-century historians, including the Hammonds. This book will be useful to historians of working-class movements.

Book The Origins of Pauline Pneumatology

Download or read book The Origins of Pauline Pneumatology written by Finny Philip and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2005 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finny Philip inquires into Paul's initial thoughts on the Holy Spirit. Paul's conviction that he was called to be an apostle to the Gentiles and that God bestowed the Spirit upon the Gentiles apart from Torah obedience is the basis for any inquiry on this subject. Central to Philip's argument is Paul's conviction that God graciously endowed his Gentile converts with the gift of the Spirit, an understanding that is rooted primarily in his conversion experience and secondarily in his experience with and as a missionary of the Hellenistic community in Antioch. In examining the range of expectations of the Spirit that were present in both Hebrew scripture and in the wider Jewish literature, the author comes to the conclusion that such a concept is rare, and that it is usually the covenant community to which the promise of the Spirit is given. Furthermore, Paul's own pre-Christian convictions about the Spirit, a result of his own self-perception as a Pharisee and persecutor of the church, display continuity between his thought patterns and those of Second Temple Judaism. Paul's Damascus experience was an experience of the Spirit. His experience of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 3:1-4:6) provided him with the belief that there was now a new relationship with God, which was possible through the sphere of the Spirit. In addition, Paul was influenced by the Hellenists, whose theological beliefs included the perception of the church as the eschatological temple in which the Spirit of God is the manifest presence of God. It is in these notions that one may trace the origins of Paul's thoughts on the Holy Spirit.
