Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, and the Voyages and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus I found also the Royal Library of Madrid, and the library of the Jesuits' College of San Isidro, two noble and extensive collections, open to access, and conducted with great order and Iiberality. From Don Martin Fernandez de Navarrete, who communicated various valuable and curious pieces of information, discovered in the course of his researches, I received the most oblig ing assistance; nor can I refrain from testifying my admiration of the self-sustained zeal of that estimable man, one of the last. Book With the Admiral of the Ocean Sea

Download or read book With the Admiral of the Ocean Sea written by Charles Paul Mac Kie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Admiral of the Ocean Sea: A Narrative of the First Voyage to the Western World, Drawn Mainly From the Diary of Christopher Columbus No large portion of the reading public has either the time or the inclination to delve into the many tomes which, chiefly by the liberality of the Spanish Government and the devoted labors of Munoz, Navarrete, and their successors, have been made available for the students of Columbus's life and works and yet, if we are not wholly in error, it is only from these original sources that any lifelike conception of the great discoverer's character can be formed. It is to this larger world of readers, who would gladly read the story of the renowned event of 1492 in the words of the chief actors, that our narrative is addressed. The Appendix contains a few notes upon the main points in dispute concerning Columbus and his career. Without wishing to enter into matters of controversy, it has seemed best to offer this small contribution toward the solution of the questions at issue. Book The Diario of Christopher Columbus s First Voyage to America 1492 1493

Download or read book The Diario of Christopher Columbus s First Voyage to America 1492 1493 written by and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive edition of Columbus's account of the voyage presents the most accurate printed version of his journal available to date. Unfortunately both Columbus's original manuscript, presented to Ferdinand and Isabella along with other evidence of his discoveries, and a single complete copy have been lost for centuries. The primary surviving record of the voyage-part quotation, part summary of the complete copy-is a transcription made by Bartolome de las Casas in the 1530s. This new edition of the Las Casas manuscript presents its entire contents-including notes, insertions, and canceled text-more accurately, completely, and graphically than any other Spanish text published so far. In addition, the new translation, which strives for readability and accuracy, appears on pages facing the Spanish, encouraging on-the- spot comparisons of the translation with the original. Study of the work is further facilitated by extensive notes, documenting differences between the editors' transcription and translation and those of other transcribers and translators and summarizing current research and debates on unanswered current research and debates on unanswered questions concerning the voyage. In addition to being the only edition in which Spanish and English are presented side by side, this edition includes the only concordance ever prepared for the Diario. Awaited by scholars, this new edition will help reduce the guesswork that has long plagued the study of Columbus's voyage. It may shed light on a number of issues related to Columbus's navigational methods and the identity of his landing places, issues whose resolution depend, at least in part, on an accurate transcription of the Diario. Containing day-by-day accounts of the voyage and the first sighting of land, of the first encounters with the native populations and the first appraisals of his islands explored, and of a suspenseful return voyage to Spain, the Diario provides a fascinating and useful account to historians, geographers, anthropologists, sailors, students, and anyone else interested in the discovery-or in a very good sea story. Oliver Dunn received the PH.D. degree from Cornell University. He is Professor Emeritus in Purdue University and a longtime student of Spanish and early history of Spanish America. James E. Kelley, Jr., received the M.A. degree from American University. A mathematician and computer and management consultant by vocation, for the past twenty years he has studied the history of European cartography and navigation in late-medieval times. Both are members of the Society for the History of Discoveries and have written extensively on the history of navigation and on Columbus's first voyage, Although they remain unconvinced of its conclusions, both were consultants to the National geographic Society's 1986 effort to establish Samana Cay as the site of Columbus's first landing.

This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery and Conquest of the New World: Containing the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus Entering upon what would naturally be supposed a most arduous undertaking, the preparation of this Introduction, I became aware of the fact that the magnitude of the subjects, the exalted, unquestioned posi tion of Washington Irving, which had seemed to present insurmountable difficulties, actually facilitated the accomplishment of the object of my efforts. A very pigmy may introduce a giant - the faintest streak of light in the east is sufficient to herald the coming of the orb of day. The untutored wandering Arab of the Desert, the unlettered mariner of the deep, can with unfailing accuracy point out the grand constellations of the heavens. The existence of vast superiority in any of the creations of God, obviates the necessity of introduction; the natural appreciation in mankind of that towering above or surpassing all surrounding objects of like kind makes introduction supererogatory. Download or read book A Life of Christopher Columbus Classic Reprint written by Franc B. Wilkie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus is a figure in history which presents all the variations, the shiftings, the many-colored lights of a kaleidescope. He has no fixed name in the language of the nation. He is Columbus, Columbo, Colon, Colonus; he is Christoval Colon, and Christo pher Columbus. He is claimed by the residents of several places as having been born in their respective localities; he was descended from noble fami lies, and his father was a humble wool-comber. He was educated at a' university, he assisted his father in his lowly occupation. He was a student, a wool-comber, and a sailor at the immature age of fourteen years. 'he was familiar with geography, and yet, as the facts subsequently established, he scarcely knew its simplest rudiments. These are only a few of the contrarieties in his life as recorded in his tory. He discovered America, and yet he did noth ing of the kind. This Northern half of the American Continent is about to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of a discovery which he never made. The enormous region known as North America, he did not discover, he never even dreamed of its existence. He did not undertake his voyage influenced by the slightest idea that a new world was to be found; it was a different approach to an old world, India, that he sought, and he died in the belief that it was the coasts of India that he had encountered; hence the name West Indies given to the islands that confronted him as he sailed westward.
