Book excerpt: The work of Hornung and Perry (1982) is reviewed in which the essential concepts of two-dimensional separation were extended to three-dimensional steady flow, and the vortex skeleton model and electromagnetic analogy were introduced. The model is extended to give a simple topological rule by which the vortex skeleton of a flow can be established from the structure of the wall streamline pattern. The important question of the occurrence of smoothly starting separation without zeros in the wall shear stress, is examined in the light of a new local solution of the Navier-Stokes and continuity equations. Book excerpt: The German Aerospace Research Establishment (DFVLR) has initiated a new series of seminars concerning fundamental problems in applied engineering sciences. These seminars will be devoted to interdisciplinary topics related to the vast variety of DFVLR activities in the fields of fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, guidance and control, materials and struc tures, non-nuclear energetics, communication technology, and remote sensing. The purpose of the series is twofold, namely, to bring modern ideas and techniques to the attention of the DFVLR in order to stimulate internal activi ties, and secondly, to promulgate DFVLR achievements wi thin the international scientific/technical community. To this end, prominent speakers from Germany and other countries will be invited to join in a series of lectures and discussions on certain topics of mutual interest. The first colloquium of this series dealt with the dynamics of nonlinear systems, especially in relation'to its application to fluid mechanics, particularly in transcritical flows. Of special interest are questions concerning the formation of nonlinear three-dimensional structures in classical fluid mechanical stability problems, the physical process of transition to turbulence, and the appearance of chaotic solutions. The scope of lectures reaches from self-organization in physical systems to structural stability of three-dimensional vortex patterns, the treatment of dissipative and conservative systems, the formation of nonlinear structures in the region of laminar-turbulent transition, and numerical simulation of cumulus cloud convection in meteorology. The seminar should provide an insight into the extent to which theoretical findings in Non linear Dynamics apply to the comprehension of fluid-mechanical problems.

Particular focus was placed on understanding characteristics of the secondary vorticity ejected from the body and the interaction of the secondary vorticity with the primary vortex. Since both onset of boundary layer separation and the form of the secondary vorticity structures are sensitive to variation of the velocity normal to the body axis, the effect of normal velocity on vortex-body interaction was carefully examined. The physical features of the flow evolution were categorized in terms of an impact parameter and a thickness parameter, which respectively represent ratios of velocity and length scales associated with the vortex to those associated with the flow in the absence of the vortex. Experiments were performed using a combination of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) flow visualization and particle-image velocimetry (PIV) in a water tank to examine the form of the secondary vorticity structures with both "high" and "low" values of the impact parameter for normal vortex interaction with a circular cylinder and with a thin blade. A new type of Lagrangian vorticity method based on a tetrahedral mesh was developed and applied to compute the secondary vorticity evolution during vortex-cylinder interaction. Computations were also performed for model problems to examine in detail wrapping of a vortex loop around a columnar vortex and impulsive cutting of a columnar vortex with finite axial flow.
