Download or read book The Philokalia written by Brock Bingaman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philokalia (literally "love of the beautiful or good") is, after the Bible, the most influential source of spiritual tradition within the Orthodox Church. First published in Greek in 1782 by St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain and St. Macarios of Corinth, the Philokalia includes works by thirty-six influential Orthodox authors from the fourth to fifteenth-centuries such as Maximus the Confessor, Peter of Damascus, Symeon the New Theologian, and Gregory Palamas. Surprisingly, this important collection of theological and spiritual writings has received little scholarly attention. With the growing interest in Orthodox theology, the need for a substantive resource for philokalic studies has become increasingly evident. The purpose of the present volume is to remedy that lack by providing an ecumenical collection of scholarly essays on the Philokalia that will introduce readers to its background, motifs, authors, and relevance for contemporary life and thought.
Download or read book Being Orthodox written by Martin Dudley and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Martin's book is the delighted exclamation of someone who has learnt - is learning - to swim in the ocean that is Orthodoxy: "Come on in; it is lovely here!"' Andrew Louth Until now, there has been little in the way of an accessible guide for those who seek to become or live as Orthodox Christians. A new convert himself, Martin Dudley is familiar with the questions, feelings and challenges that arise. He explains that, to grasp Orthodoxy, we must think and act as the Orthodox do. This involves suspending the Western analytical tendency and allowing free rein to the synthetic tendency, which enables us to detect a unity and perceive, however dimly, the interaction between the parts and the whole in relation to God and the Church. The author draws on a wealth of material, from the Church Fathers to straight-talking Mother Thekla, to explore the essentials of belief. He provides guidance on participating in the Liturgy, the requirements for fasting, confession and Orthodox prayer. In celebrating the culture of Orthodoxy - shaped by many different ethnicities and languages, gloriously expressed in art, music and literature - this volume fully conveys the rigour and joy of becoming and being Orthodox.
Download or read book Orthodox Russia in Crisis written by Isaiah Gruber and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal period in Russian history, the Time of Troubles in the early seventeenth century has taken on new resonance in the country's post-Soviet search for new national narratives. The historical role of the Orthodox Church has emerged as a key theme in contemporary remembrances of this time—but what precisely was that role? The first comprehensive study of the Church during the Troubles, Orthodox Russia in Crisis reconstructs this tumultuous time, offering new interpretations of familiar episodes while delving deep into the archives to uncover a much fuller picture of the era. Analyzing these sources, Isaiah Gruber argues that the business activity of monasteries played a significant role in the origins and course of the Troubles and that frequent changes in power forced Church ideologues to innovate politically, for example inventing new justifications for power to be granted to the people and to royal women. These new ideas, Gruber contends, ultimately helped bring about a new age in Russian spiritual life and a crystallization of the national mentality.
Download or read book A History of Russian Literature written by Andrew Kahn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia possesses one of the richest and most admired literatures of Europe, reaching back to the eleventh century. A History of Russian Literature provides a comprehensive account of Russian writing from its earliest origins in the monastic works of Kiev up to the present day, still rife with the creative experiments of post-Soviet literary life. The volume proceeds chronologically in five parts, extending from Kievan Rus' in the 11th century to the present day.The coverage strikes a balance between extensive overview and in-depth thematic focus. Parts are organized thematically in chapters, which a number of keywords that are important literary concepts that can serve as connecting motifs and 'case studies', in-depth discussions of writers, institutions, and texts that take the reader up close and. Visual material also underscores the interrelation of the word and image at a number of points, particularly significant in the medieval period and twentieth century. The History addresses major continuities and discontinuities in the history of Russian literature across all periods, and in particular bring out trans-historical features that contribute to the notion of a national literature. The volume's time-range has the merit of identifying from the early modern period a vital set of national stereotypes and popular folklore about boundaries, space, Holy Russia, and the charismatic king that offers culturally relevant material to later writers. This volume delivers a fresh view on a series of key questions about Russia's literary history, by providing new mappings of literary history and a narrative that pursues key concepts (rather more than individual authorial careers). This holistic narrative underscores the ways in which context and text are densely woven in Russian literature, and demonstrates that the most exciting way to understand the canon and the development of tradition is through a discussion of the interrelation of major and minor figures, historical events and literary politics, literary theory and literary innovation.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html During the 2000-year history of Christianity, there have been many married couples who have truly become “one flesh” in marriage, who have given all their strength and skills, and sometimes even their very lives, to the service of the Lord. It is in countries professing Orthodoxy, and especially in Russia, that the number of canonized married couples, families in which both husband and wife are saints, and often also their children, is so large. Many of our heroes are known throughout the Christian world. These are the holy spouses forefathers Adam and Eve; parents of the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John Zacharias and Elizabeth; parents of the Most Holy Theotokos Joachim and Anna; the Old Testament prophets Isaac and Abraham and their spouses Rebekah and Sarah; Gregory Sr. and Nonna, parents of St. Gregory the Theologian ; Zabulon and Sosanna, parents of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, Adrian and Natalia. These are our compatriots with you: Cyril and Maria of Radonezh, parents of St. Sergius of Radonezh; Juliana and Georgy Osorin; Sergius and Varvara Svirsky, parents of St. Alexander Svirsky; a host of princely couples: Peter and Fevronia of Murom; Dimitry Donskoy and Evdokia of Moscow; Mikhail Tverskoy and Anna Kashinskaya; Yaroslav the Wise and Irina Novgorodskaya; Gleb and Agafia of Vladimir; the family of the royal martyrs Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov. + Marriage is not a private matter between two persons. By divine blessing, he is called to be a real image of the highest values of being - intra-divine life, unity in the love of God and man, human love in God, the good deed of man in creation. This blessing is fully realized in Christian marriage, when the ultimate goal of both spouses is the joint acquisition of the Kingdom of the Most Holy Trinity. The purpose of marriage is the full disclosure in it of the images of the highest values of being, the ascent to communion with their prototypes. Therefore, the theology of marriage is not closed in itself, but interfaces with all facets of theology as a whole. Protopresbyter John Meyendorff points to the almost complete absence of Orthodox theological works devoted to “the ecclesiastical and sacramental dimensions of marriage, which, being a sacrament of the Church, cannot be reduced to the legal, psychological and emotional categories in which it is usually considered” 1 . This circumstance in itself can serve as a justification for the appearance of this work.
