Download or read book Electroacoustics written by Mendel Kleiner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroacoustic devices such as microphones and loudspeakers are used everywhere from cars and mobile phones to homes, places of worship, and sports arenas. They are a key part of the modern communication society, helping to transmit information to our ears. A contemporary introduction to the subject, Electroacoustics explains the scientific and engineering principles behind the design of these sound transducers. It also examines the compromises that are necessary when designing transducers for use in the real world. Learn about Ultrasonic Transducers, Loudspeaker Enclosure Design, and More This accessible textbook book is based on the author’s extensive experience teaching electroacoustics to advanced graduate and graduate students. He uses the concept of electrical circuit analogies to help readers quickly grasp the fundamentals of acoustical and mechanical systems. The book covers both traditional electrodynamic audio and ultrasonic transducers and includes up-to-date material on arrays, planar transducers, loudspeaker enclosure design, and more. To meet the needs of a broad range of readers, the book also includes background material on room acoustics, electrical circuits, and electrical filters. Electroacoustic theory is explained in an easy-to-read style without resorting to matrix theory. Throughout, a wealth of illustrations and exercises make the ideas more concrete. Get a Solid Foundation in Electroacoustic Engineering Principles The book emphasizes multidisciplinary engineering principles, preparing students for the broad range of applications they may encounter in their research as well as later in their careers. The modern treatment of transducers also makes this a valuable reference for transducer designers, acoustical consultants, hobbyists, and anyone involved in electroacoustic design.

Over Germany his Halifax bomber is shot down by a night fighter: He has ten seconds to act or he will never see her again. Ambrose Adlam did not even want to go to war. Hitler’s war came looking for him. The war enveloped him, it took over his world; there was no escape. To do nothing was not an option. Ambrose joined RAF ground crew. That was not enough. He volunteered for active service as a Flight Engineer in Halifax bombers. The RAF high command forgot to tell him that his chance of survival was minimal. Ambrose found out the hard way as his bomber plummeted to earth in flames. Parachuting into a duck pond in Nazi Germany, he narrowly escaped death. On the run, he is pursued by German forces. They shot him. He survived. An odyssey through the monstrous world of Luftwaffe prisoner of war camps brought him to the eastern fringe of the Third Reich. The camp was called Stalag Luft III. Beneath the exterior calm of the camp routine, an ambitious plot was brewing. The prisoners were organising a mass breakout. There were hundreds involved. As a non-officer he would not be one to break free … but there was a lot that he could do to support the Great Escape. This was his war, his mission in life and his purpose. But would he ever see Miranda again? A gripping true story of love and war constructed from meticulous research, family records and eye-witness accounts.

Book excerpt: With its cast of train-hopping, drug-dealing, glue-huffing lowlifes, Scott Sparling's debut--an homage to the American crime novel--chronicles the lives of damaged people doing their meager best and often finding the worst. Wire to Wire assembles a cast of train-hopping, drug-dealing, glue-huffing lowlifes, in a stunning homage to one of our most popular enduring genres—the American crime novel. While riding a freight car through Detroit, Michael Slater suffers a near-fatal accident—a power line to the head. After a questionable recovery and a broken relationship, he abandons his new home in the Arizona desert, though not before leaving a man for dead. Slater returns to Michigan in a busted-up Ford to reunite with an old train-hopping pal, but quickly discovers that the Pleasant Peninsula of his youth is none too pleasant. As Slater’s past catches up with his present—a love triangle, a local drug dealer, the damaged residents of a destitute Northern Michigan town—rock bottom keeps slipping farther away. Three years later, Slater sits in a dark video-editing suite, popping speed like penny candy, attempting to reconcile himself with the unfilmed memories that haunt his screens and his conscience.
Download or read book Wavelet Subband and Block Transforms in Communications and Multimedia written by Ali N. Akansu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelet and subband transforms have been of great interest in the fields of - gineering and applied mathematics. The theories of these powerful signal p- cessing tools have matured and many applications utilizing them are emerging in different disciplines. This book, comprised of eleven chapter contributions from prominent researchers in the field, focuses on communications and mul- media applications of wavelet and subband transforms. The first six chapters of this book deal with a variety of communications applications that significantly benefit from wavelet and subband theories. S- ilarly, the remaining five chapters present recent advances in multimedia - plications of wavelet and subband transforms. These chapters interconnect the requirements of applications with the underlying theory and their engineering solutions. Hence, the reader can easily trace the entire path from fundamentals to the purpose and merit of application in hand. A combined list of references for the entire volume is given at the end of the text that should be helpful to the interested reader for a further study. This book is anticipated to be of particular interest to engineers and sci- tists who want to learn about state-of-the-art subband and wavelet transform applications as well as their theoretical underpinnings. It can also serve as a supplementary book for graduate level engineering and applied mathematics courses on wavelet and subband transforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind barbed wire in Korea, 88,000 heroic Chinese and North Korean prisoners of war wrote an unforgettable account of their disillusionment with communism. This is the simple and moving story of their resolute decision to remain on freedom’s side of the Bamboo Curtain, rather than accept repatriation to their communist homelands, vividly recounted here by a first-hand observer, the former Chief of Psychological Warfare of the Far East Command. The story begins before the Korean armistice, in the prison compounds maintained by the United Nations Command on Koje Island. Here, humane and thoughtful treatment proved a more potent weapon than the communists’ brainwashing methods. The prisoners were carefully screened; only those who declared they would forcibly resist repatriation were admitted to the non-communist camps. Inside the camps, even though behind barbed wire, these men found a greater freedom of opportunity than they had been allowed in their communist homelands. They learned to read and write, studied agriculture and learned useful trades; and enjoy sports and recreation. Then, from Oct. to Dec. 1953, under the terms of the armistice, the anti-communist prisoners faced a crucial test of their determination. In a demilitarized zone near Panmunjom they were individually interviewed and subjected to “explanations” by communist officials regarding their final choice. There is deep tragedy and high comedy in the encounters at Panmunjom: tragedy in the threats made by the communists against the men and their families; comedy in the ingenious methods the prisoners devised to turn the tables on their interviewers during these grotesque propaganda sessions. The outcome? Only three percent of the total number of prisoners interviewed chose to return to a life under communist rule. Here was a disastrous loss of face for the communist world, and a sweeping victory for the cause of individual freedom...
